I'm really pleased that at my DCs school, gifts are strongly dis - encouraged. So there is none of this buying frenzy. Maybe not what I'm meant to write on a NOTHS thread!

Rather, it is suggested that we take the time to write a latter or a card and say thank you for what we are grateful for, if we do want to do anything. And then we can donate what we could have spent If we wish to a school that they e linked up with, in a deprived area of Zambia.

This was a suggestion by the teachers, and it really really works and is welcomed by all. The pupils also do fundraising things throughout the year for the school in Zambia.

Dd made her teacher a Hama bead bowl we have also done homemade flower arrangements.

This year, my dd has written a song that she says she is going to sing to her teacher on the last day. It includes a line about getting up at 7am is hard but my teacher makes it worthwhile.

Doesn't have to cost a lot to be personal and show appreciation.

Ds1s teachers this year has been an nqt in a class of 22 boys and 8 girls, I had my apprehensions at the start of the year, and yet, she's been an utter star, ds1 has come on in leaps and bounds, Not only flying ahead academically but looking forward to going every day
Finances are tight (I'm now a sp) but I've bought her a personalised diary and will get her a bottle of wine, along with a card where I intend to say how grateful for her work I am

We used to decorate crockery for the teachers, but I decided they would have a cupboard full of the stuff and a abandoned that plan. I tend to buy a bottle of wine, and the children make a card, after reading here that thank you notes are appreciated.

I like the idea of a class collection, you could give more for the money rather than umpteen random boxes of chocolate /wine /sweets, but I couldn't face organizing it, and collecting all the money.

It's bad enough getting people to RSVP s party invite, this would be ten times worse.

I'm lazy with presents and usually opt for a bottle of wine. Some of my friends are teachers and I've yet to see them turn down wine when offered!

This is the first year we have had to think about it, but decided to go for a homemade gift. We stuck some seashells onto card, added some bright ribbon on the shells looked like balloons floating in the sky, then popped the picture in one of those small box type frames. Teacher seems to like it anyway and Bella loved making it.

A heartfelt note of thanks and flattery is our limit for teachers.

we usually make bookmarks, but one year we melted old records into bowls - my son had taken the record player in and the teachers had all come to see and listen so it was relevant not random!

My son will be giving his teacher a £10 High Street Voucher and his TA's a £5 voucher. He will also be decorating Gingerbread men for all of his class staff - this is because he is very ginger and loves gingerbread men and is a nice way of reminding them of him. I will be writing a letter to his main teacher and the head teacher because he has come so far in year 1 as opposed to year R. His willingness to attend and the enjoyment he has got throughout this last year has been greatly improved and I believe that it has been the compatibility of his teacher with his personality.

I don't agree with teacher gifts. All occupations deserve rewarding si why single teachers out ?

My son will make a card and maybe give a small box of chocs, but think that collecting for a big pressie has gone out of favour in my neck of the woods as no-one seems to do it anymore...

We do a card with a personal note of appreciation.

A hand-drawn and handwritten card was the main gift. We also gave a pack of really nice brush pens which could be used by the teacher in creating resources or for use in the classroom by the children themselves. I have a number of teacher friends/relatives and they told me they most value something that makes their job easier, like supplies - which of course they shouldn't be buying out of their own pocket (or mine!) but hey-ho.

A hand made card, a joint class collection which was spent on vouchers, a printed word-cloud with all the children's names.

My son (aged 5) wants to give his favourite teacher her favourite food (his idea not mine) and some flowers. He also loves giving her hugs and will make her a special card.

I don't really like class collections as I feel some people may feel they have to give more than they want or can afford. This year we gave ds3's teacher a book token as he and I had discussed our preference for and love of "paper books" at parents evening. Ds made a card to go with it and wrote a message.

We often give an Oxfam gift for life - something related to teaching in another country, with a small personal gift like chocolate for the teacher too - so many teachers have seemed really pleased with this as an idea; I am sure they still get plenty of things for themselves too.

As a teacher i really appreciate a card with a personal message inside from parent or child. Mugs and notepads-I end up with hundreds but pens are always a good gift. A Personalised stamp set was my favourite gift I have had!

DD1 will be making a card for her teachers. We hadn't thought about a gift.

DD is only 4 and not in school yet but will be making her nursery teachers a card. She's a keen writer so I'll mostly leave her to it - half the fun is seeing what random message she's decided to write!

Homemade thank you cards and a tin of biscuits/chocolates. Biscuits etc always given at the beginning of the last week so that they can be enjoyed with a brew (hopefully).

However I did give dd netball teachers a bottle of prosecco each but they were volunteers not on the teaching staff.

I've never done teacher presents, don't really see why people do it. My DC show up, behave and learn, I think that is what teachers would ultimately want.
