As part of their Good To Know campaign, McDonald’s have released three new videos to give a little bit more information on the ingredients they use in their products, and they’re keen to hear what Mumsnetters think. You may have noticed the recent threads we’ve had about McDonald’s chicken nuggets and fries. The final video focuses on McDonalds’ burgers and gives a bit more information about the ingredients they use to make them. McDonalds would love to hear your feedback on the video.

McDonald’s say "We’ve launched our Good To Know campaign to provide our customers with more information on the quality of the ingredients we use in our products. Despite some common misconceptions, our Chicken McNuggets are made with 100% chicken breast meat, fries are made from real, whole British spuds and 100% beef from whole cuts of forequarter and flank goes into a McDonald’s burger. Alongside the Good To Know website, we’re launching the three new videos you’ll see in Mumsnet threads over the next few weeks, and we’re really interested to hear your thoughts"

Please watch the 40 second video below:

After watching the video please let us know:

  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?
  • Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
Whatever your thoughts, McDonald’s would love to hear about them. Everyone who adds a comment will be entered in to a prize draw, where one winner will receive a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks & good luck,

MNHQ

I agree with others that the video does come across as a bit patronising. It left me wondering why the consistency of the McDonald's burgers is so weird if it's just good quality beef. Felt like I was hearing half the story. I would be more likely to go on the website having seen the video because I'm interested in finding out about what's in the food I eat. I don't go to McDonalds and would be unlikely to take my child there unless info on the website seemed full and clear and evidenced.

thesoupdragon44 · 05/01/2016 21:39

What did you think of the overall message in the video?

I think they are bright and fun

  • Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?
I was surprised as I think we have all thought that the food from mcdonalds has some iffy additives, it has been good to se that they contain natural ingrediants
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
I have become a customer recently as I enjoy the crispy chiken wraps, I'm happier about the fact that now mcdonalds seem to be making helthier options, plus I never liked burgers!
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
I sometimes have a look at the website, and yes I would like more information, providing it is true
CMOTDibbler · 05/01/2016 21:43

Its the least likeable of the new ads - though I have heard someone claiming that 'Mcd bought a company called 100% so they could say their burgers were 100% beef' so maybe people do need this level.

  • What did you think of the overall message in the video? Positive, but no new info
  • Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how? Not really, I still see them as an occasional treat
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children? N/A
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information? Not really, I'll occasionally check nutrition etc on the main site and would possibly surf to it if there were links and they looked interesting and relevant
Gazelda · 06/01/2016 18:43
  1. Good message, clear and simple.
  2. No. I visit McDonalds now and then, and have the burgers. To be honest, I think the texture of the burgers gives the impression it is not 100% beef - they feel too processed. Burger King's are more rough and mincey. IYKWIM.
  3. n/a
  4. No, not really. I know what I'm getting at McDonalds - fast food for a reasonable price. No marketing, nutritional info or gimics are going to make me visit more frequently. I can see however that it might be something to visit as a 'fact finding' exercise for my school aged daughter. She is at the age where she knows healthy foods, unhealthy foods and sometimes needs help appreciating that a balance is OK.
VaseandCandle · 06/01/2016 21:25

Macdonalds are trying to spread the message that their food is well sourced. I feel the whole good to know campaign is an attempt to dispel the notion that macdonalds is a large uncaring business purely driven by profit.

It did not change my perception of macdonalds. If I liked their food I would eat it.

It does not want to make me eat a macdonalds. The image of the burger at the end is unappealing to me.

I would not be interested in visiting their website.

ThomasRichard · 07/01/2016 17:27
  1. It's good to know McDonalds don't take themselves too seriously.
  2. Yes. I was of the 'McDonalds burgers are made of slurry and anus' school of thought but I've reconsidered.
  3. Yes, probably.
  4. Not unless I was looking for specific information.
Sixgeese · 07/01/2016 19:04
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?
That the burgers were made of decent cuts of meat and not the scraps.
  • Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?
Not really, while we are frequent visitors to McD we do go every now and again.
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
I wouldn't visit the website, but I wouldn't turn off the advert.
sjonlegs · 07/01/2016 20:19

I'm personally not a massive McDonald's fan - but we take the kids from time to time. This certainly instils more faith in them and if this is right then I'm far happier eating there. It's a good advert and good for PR. I think this will really improve their message and give a better impression.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 08/01/2016 23:28

What did you think of the overall message in the video?
The message was informative but I resent being portrayed as a bimbo blonde who listens to my hairdresser. I might want to know more about McD's burgers but for me, not because I'm listening to others. I also wonder how KFC chickens are reared for example (I haven't discussed this with my hairdresser!)

Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?
No. I've seen previous advertising and I don't think McD's are any worse than other processed food. Clearly any advertising is biased but I enjoy a Big Mac as a guilty pleasure!

If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
I already visit McD's on a monthly basis, almost exclusively at a service station when travelling. We visit with our children and we particularly like the choice of milk or water. We dislike your deep fried fish fingers though., purely due to how they're cooked (see comments below).

Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
Probably not. I like your Big Macs, the service station has little alternative and I believe your products contain better ingredients than they have in the past. I wouldn't therefore feel it necessary to visit your website. I guess I feel more interested in the way your foods are cooked and the hygiene of your outlets rather than anything else. Less info on this though.

WhatWouldFlopDo · 09/01/2016 16:58
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?
It seemed clear, the burgers are made from 100% beef. I liked the cow, but I didn't like the hairdresser bit.
  • Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?
Not really, I think we've seen an as like this before
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
We already visit McDonald's
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
Probably not unless I was actively looking for something
kungfupidge · 09/01/2016 17:20

The overall message of the video was very positive in my opinion.

It dont think it changed my perception of McDonalds burgers at all my family love having a macdonalds for a treat and i have grown up with this company.
i am a macdonalds visitor and will continue to do so as i think fast food is ok in moderation.

I would be interested in visiting the website to find out more about the company as this is something ive never done before thankyou x

GetKnitted · 09/01/2016 20:58
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?
I think it felt a bit patronising of the people who believed the burger was full of junk. I mean it probably isn't that long ago since it was true and certainly most of the other processed food people eat is full of rubbish. It sounded like you want to make them look foolish.
  • Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?
No, I already believed that they were 100% beef.
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
n/a
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
probably not, to be honest
KittyKat88 · 09/01/2016 22:35
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?
It felt like a genuine attempt to reassure the public that only prime beef cuts goes into their product with nothing artificial added.
  • Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?
It made me feel less distrustful of the way their burgers are produced.
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children? I'm not a red meat eater so it wouldn't appeal to me, but I think I would allow my DH to take our girls if they wanted to go.
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information? I think if my DDs were going to a McDonald's restaurant I might look on the website to research the products prior to my DD's visit.
Mummageddon · 10/01/2016 07:33

It hasn't changed my mind as I've seen McDonald's adverts before and have heard these messages before. It doesn't change my perception that McDonald's food is fine for an occasional treat and we will continue to go as a family once every 3-4ish months. I think the food quality has got better in the last 10-15 years, with all the public scrutiny, e.g. removing salt from the chicken nuggets and using better quality meat. I wouldn't be interested in visiting the website as I think I know enough about food as it is.

villagefox · 10/01/2016 15:48

What did you think of the overall message in the video?
The message was clear if a little simple. I could not really tell if it was aimed at children (who would tell their parents) or adults (if it was adults it was a little patronising)

Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?
A little. I was pleased to hear about their provenance and I think that is an important message. However the advert can not remove the fact that a McDonalds burger is not a healthy meal choice as overall it has a lot of daily calories in it.

If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
We only visit as a treat.

Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
I have never visited it however I would do if it had the calorie content of all items on the menu so I could attempt to make a healthy choice.

Ebayaholic · 10/01/2016 20:53
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?

It's the same message you've been promoting for years, although a reminder isn't a bad thing

  • Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?

No, I was already familiar with the message re the relative healthiness of your burgers

  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?

I'm a regular

  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

No, I'm not that interested in more info than was in the video

SuzCG · 11/01/2016 09:43

I had already heard that their burgers were 100% beef - it's okay to have the message reinforced and to know that they use better cuts of meat.
It doesn't really change how often I would visit McD's - we go now and again as a treat for the kids (if I want a quality meal out with them we would go somewhere else and that won't ever change). But I see absolutely nothing wrong in taking them now and again - sometimes it's the most convenient place to go - it's quick and easy, we know exactly what we are going to get and there's something for everyone.

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 11/01/2016 12:03

That video annoyed me. The women are silly and believe anything you tell them whilst getting their hair done, so a sensible man has to put them straight?

I still wouldn't eat a McDonald's burger. Or any fast food burger.

If you like that kind of thing it's ok occasionally, but don't try to kid yourself it isn't junk.

clockbuscanada · 11/01/2016 17:46
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?
I think the video was very positive and a good continuation of previous campaigns emphasising provenance and quality of McDonald's products.
  • Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?
Not at all, just built on what I already knew.
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
I'm a current visitor (in moderation) with my family. It's one of the few fast food outlets where my daughter will eat and try new things - not for want of trying, I hasten to add!
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
Not really. I like getting dietary info from the back of the paper sheets that go on the trays in McDonalds.
clairew111 · 11/01/2016 18:30

It doesn't change how I feel about Mcdonalds. I still won't eat there unless I really have too but then I am a veggie.

flso · 12/01/2016 11:09

The overall message of the video was very positive - I think that fast food still has many bad and unhealthy connotations, but that these chains are now making a huge effort to change this as society increasingly realises the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
I am currently a McDonalds visitor, and this video has changed my perception of McDonalds' Burgers slightly - I wouldn't feel so bad about eating one now! However, I still feel that this isn't the type of food that should be eaten on a regular basis. Everything in good balance.
I wouldn't be inspired to visit the website, but it's great that Mcdonalds are making their food better and healthier.

zippyants · 12/01/2016 15:41

What did you think of the overall message in the video?

Friendly and just gave a good impression of burgers!

  • Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?

Not really - will still visit as most have said on here

  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?

Already a visitor (far too often I might add!)

  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

If there is a voucher on there.....I'll visit!

Sparkle65 · 12/01/2016 16:39

Overall message was good - that Mc Donalds burgers are fresh with no additives.I quite liked it's simplicity.
It didn't change my perceptions - I already knew this about their burgers.
Already visit Mc Donalds from time to time. Its our favourite fast food place but I wish there were more healthy choices.
I might visit their website - but only to find out the carb content of food ( diabetic in the family)

Geetheflea · 12/01/2016 17:36

The overall message of the video was positive.

It didn't change my idea of McDonalds burgers at all as I was already aware they were 100% beef

I'm visit McD already!

I wouldn't visit the website.
