As part of their Good To Know campaign, McDonald’s have released three new videos to give a little bit more information on the ingredients they use in their products, and they’re keen to hear what Mumsnetters think. You may have noticed the recent threads we’ve had about McDonald’s chicken nuggets and fries. The final video focuses on McDonalds’ burgers and gives a bit more information about the ingredients they use to make them. McDonalds would love to hear your feedback on the video.

McDonald’s say "We’ve launched our Good To Know campaign to provide our customers with more information on the quality of the ingredients we use in our products. Despite some common misconceptions, our Chicken McNuggets are made with 100% chicken breast meat, fries are made from real, whole British spuds and 100% beef from whole cuts of forequarter and flank goes into a McDonald’s burger. Alongside the Good To Know website, we’re launching the three new videos you’ll see in Mumsnet threads over the next few weeks, and we’re really interested to hear your thoughts"

Please watch the 40 second video below:

After watching the video please let us know:
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?
  • Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

Whatever your thoughts, McDonald’s would love to hear about them.
Everyone who adds a comment will be entered in to a prize draw, where one winner will receive a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks & good luck,

I have seen similar promotions before so I was not surprised by the content.

I visit Macdonalds occasionally and this advert will not change the frequency with which I visit.

I do not visit company websites.

I do know people who are convinced that Macdonalds food is terrible, and have had parents complain in the past if I took their children with mine. I therefore feel that this advert delivers a positive message than cannot be reinforced enough.

Nice positive message from the video's, but would you expect any less?! I thought all the videos were good, almost laughing at themselves and countering all the myths.

No new perception, seen adverts before stating 100% beef.

We are regular visitors however making a choice this year to make it a treat visit rather than fortnightly. Despite the claims of 'good for you' and despite my love of burgers, there are much healthier alternatives.

I will maybe visit the sight but only because I'm on a health kick.

I thought it showed an inaccurate view of mothers listening to gossip about McDonald's burgers while being pampered Hmm

I didn't realise they were made from 100% beef so this is news to me.

I already go on occasion with my children but this won't make me go more often as its still not great for you...

No it wouldn't encourage me to go on their website. This isn't something I would normally so anyway.

Went to McDonalds today - my fries were actually hot for once.. Wooo!

Already aware that the burgers are made from 100% beef.

Didn't particularly like the video.

Wouldn't visit the company website.

Will go to McDonalds as normal - every now and then.

What did you think of the overall message in the video?

I agree with previous posters that suggest that it intimates that women are thick and only get their information from gossip or chitchat. It also devalues that there is a wider concern where meat is from, and that it is a myth to think that meat hasn't got issues attached to it - it devalues this message by saying that a woman heard about this through chitchat. It also devalues a person wanting to make healthy choices!

I think it would be better to demonstrate (if it is true) that McDonalds is different in that they don't use certain parts of the cow. I agree with the outdoor and organic aspects although the video shares this, I am still conscious of the evidence to support it.

Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?

It hasn't changed them. I would be more keen to believe this message if they could demonstrate within it that they only use the animal's muscle tissue (aka what we know as meat) rather than what goes into mince (e.g. offal products). I know it gives the two areas on the cow but it is assuming that people that watch the video know what those areas of the cow in terms of meat, and that people 'know' from that, that it is meat in the 'steak is meat' understanding, not 'meat is every part of the animal'. Knowing the taste as I do well, it is hard for me to believe it is just salt and pepper added, and meat.

If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?

The video hasn't changed my perspective on visiting. I go infrequently and will continue to do so.

Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

No. I'd rather be told it when I go to store, very clearly and not in propaganda. In a factual way.

I'm already a McDonalds visitor.

I would visit the website

Hasn't changed,my perception of McDonalds, i don't go burgers aren't good and fatty and greasy. The adverts is a very good marketing ploy to make Joe Public eat more burgers.

Overall message trying to say that they use quality beef in their burgers.

I didn't change my perception of McDonald's Burgers (as we hardly eat them anyway).

We only go to McDonald's from time to time, it's a treat - not a regular thing.

No, I wouldn't visit the website to find out more information, I feel fully informed.

The video didn't change my opinion either way. We use McDonalds occasional as a treat for the children and will continue to do so. The video seemed to be aimed at children rather than adults. Or it was just a little patronising!

What did you think of the overall message in the video?
overall I thought it was positive and interesting to see which part of the meat they use.

Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?
no it didn't. I never order burgers at mcdonalds and nor do my children. I only eat there very occasionally as it never seems to fill them up.

I wouldn't be interested in visiting their website either.

The message is clear but its not new - they have been telling us this for years. My husband is the only one who eats McDonalds burgers. The children prefer their chicken nuggets and I prefer their fish. I wouldnt choose their restaurant for the quality of their food or the restaurant ambiance - its just a quick way to refuel when we are out shopping and a treat for the kids who always eat it all up

What did you think of the overall message in the video?
I thought it was ok, not too much of a hard sell, and I generally agree with the message behind the video that a lot of the scare stories talked about the big fast food companies are urban myths see the "they must be full of preservatives because they don't rot" theory cited above - although of course there are entirely valid and well evidenced criticisms as well.

  • Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?

It reminded me of something I knew already that the beef is from local sources and is not implicated in rainforest clearance. It doesn't cover the issue of fodder though.
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?

We already go to MsDonalds very occasionally where it's the most convenient option and this video wouldn't change that.
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

Not at the moment but I might use it if a specific question occurred to me, to settle a bet (we talk about food a lot at work Grin) or I was going to visit with a friend or child with specific dietary requirements.

That McDonald's burgers are made with witchcraft, rather than additives. How do they taste so processed?

  • Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?

Not really, I've already seen the 100% chicken breast meat, 100% potato etc information

  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?

I do eat there, and my children eat Happy Meals already.

  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

No, but I'd be interested in a more informative less patronising video.

I liked the video thought it was fun and very colourful. I didn't believe the message, they don't look like burgers with only salt and pepper added.

It hasn't changed my perception of their burgers, years of bad stories won't convince me.

I do go for a great with the kid's and will continue to.

I am not interested in visiting the website.

  • I liked the message, not too silly or too serious. Wide appeal.
  • I would never eat meat in McDonald's, I was veggie for too long & only eat organic meat occasionally! But I might not immediately say No if my son asks for a burger (we only eat fish there usually)
  • I might visit the website, not just for meat information but to find out more about the fish and the truth about the chicken nuggets!

  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?

It's clear but I don't like the fact that McDonalds idea of a mum is as portrayed in that video. Yup, we're obviously all dumb blondes who believe any old crap we hear. That has made you drop in my estimation. Food wise I'm pretty happy with the quality of food McDonalds provide, it is at the higher end of the fast food industries standards.

  • Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?

No, I was already aware of that information

  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children? We go occasionally, this won't change that.

  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

Possibly if I wanted to check the information.

The video would be reassuring if you were concerned about what was in the burgers, but I think McD has done promotion of this before. It didn't change my perception of McD at all, but I do worry about how these kind of ads are interpreted by some people - if the ingredients are good, then the food must be healthy!
We do visit McDs but as an occasional treat only, and this wouldn't change as a result of this advert. Probably wouldn't visit the website, as I don't eat there regularly enough to be worried.

I have a McDonald's 10 minute walk from my house. But I could honestly count on my hand how many times we visit throughout the year. I certainly would never 'ban' it as I feel that would just income age the kids to want it it more when either I'm not around or when they are older.

I do feel the message on the video shows a more positive side to McDonald's. I am delighted to hear it is 100% beef. So yes my perceptions have changed. I am still very wary about the chicken quality. If we go to McDonald's then my 6 year old will want the chicken nuggets. So I would love more clarity on that and where the chicken are from. Then maybe I would visit more.

I will visit the website, to be honest I never even knew their was a website until now.

As a well established brand, it is very difficult to make big changes to the general perception.
McDonalds clearly recognises the back-lash against junk-food and is keen to set out that it does offer some relatively healthy products.
Clarifying that the burgers that McDonalds use are simply beef, salt and pepper is welcome.
The skeptic in me will still tend to ask "ok, but what about the ketchup / milkshake / sugary drink / etc." but again, confirmation of the simple nature of the core product is welcome.

As an aside, i'd really like it if there were a few gluten free options.

I have visited the website, but I am happy anyway to continue eating mcdonalds as an occasional treat!

What did you think of the overall message in the video?

I found it a bit patronising and the insinuation that the public think that poor quality cows are full of E numbers and not a burger recipe is bizarre.

Watchable but I always enjoy McDonalds' adverts but they don't leave me wanting to go out and get one though.

  • Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?

With so much emphasis on the meat in the burger, it made me wonder what the rest of the ingredients are and how healthy/unhealthy they are...

  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?

Perhaps in the future when they're bigger but certainly not at the moment.

  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

Not really necessary as I'm not a customer.

As others have said, I found the video a bit sexist and patronising. Good message to get across though.

We go to McDonalds maybe once a month, and are not likely to increase or decrease our visits based on this.

I will not be visiting the good to know website

I think potions of fries should be larger and the nuggets bigger. I love the consistency and flavour of the vanilla milkshake but it has always made my family and friends phglemy afterwards.
