As part of their Good To Know campaign, McDonald’s have released three new videos to give a little bit more information on the ingredients they use in their products, and they’re keen to hear what Mumsnetters think. You may have noticed the recent threads we’ve had about McDonald’s chicken nuggets and fries. The final video focuses on McDonalds’ burgers and gives a bit more information about the ingredients they use to make them. McDonalds would love to hear your feedback on the video.

McDonald’s say "We’ve launched our Good To Know campaign to provide our customers with more information on the quality of the ingredients we use in our products. Despite some common misconceptions, our Chicken McNuggets are made with 100% chicken breast meat, fries are made from real, whole British spuds and 100% beef from whole cuts of forequarter and flank goes into a McDonald’s burger. Alongside the Good To Know website, we’re launching the three new videos you’ll see in Mumsnet threads over the next few weeks, and we’re really interested to hear your thoughts"

Please watch the 40 second video below:

After watching the video please let us know:
  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?
  • Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

Whatever your thoughts, McDonald’s would love to hear about them.
Everyone who adds a comment will be entered in to a prize draw, where one winner will receive a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks & good luck,

  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?

I liked this advert so much more than the Ronald Macdonald era. It seemed calm, sensible and informative. And was not directly aimed at children.

  • Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?

It seemed to me like they grew up as a company. Maybe its my age.

  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?

I have no objections to eating meat, or MacDonalds. I already knew they like to source their ingredients locally so they are not cutting down rain forests to sell burgers in the UK.

  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

Just did, I liked the website a lot. It looked fresh and inviting.

Overall I thought it was in a positive lights, but personally I think McDonalds are trying too hard to make themselves look good. I'm not usually a suspicious person but it just makes you wonder; what are they trying to hide?

Personally, I only go to McDonalds for their McFlurry and shakes. Yum.

Overall message: like they're trying too hard

Maybe it did change my perception a little bit as it does seem they care.

I eat halal food so won't change things for me.

The video was straight to the point, but it did not change my opinion.

I knew the burgers there were made out of 100% beef. DS loves plain hamburgers and I am addicted to their coffee, so we go there occasionally.

I might visit the Good to Know website.

On a side note though, I know it is a light-hearted advert, but do you know any mothers at all who

  1. can afford to have their hair coloured at the hairdressers AND
  2. they regularly take their children to McDonalds AND
  3. they get their information about child nutrition from their hairdresser.

It is not the 1950s.

- What did you think of the overall message in the video? - Extremely patronising. Very little actual information is given.

- Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how? - I suppose it does appear that they have made some changes since the 90's & earlier when they clearly didn't give a rat's ass about where they got the beef from or what it cost.

- If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children? - No. Not a chance. I might possibly buy something for my DD if she was really hungry & there was literally nothing else available. I'd sooner go hungry though.

- Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information? - I've visited it. Again, patronising. However if you take the time to dig a little deeper, you can find some useful information. For example, a classic burger, fries & a coffee racks up over a thousand calories, 90% of your daily saturated fat, & over half your daily salt allowance. But only about 20% of your daily fibre. So presumably we're supposed to eat salad (or other super healthy, low fat, low sugar, high fibre options for the rest of the day) - do they really think their target market are likely to do this? Think I've seen all I need to.

The message is fine if a little patronising and I didn't learn anything new.
It hasn't changed my perception of McDonald's - I don't really like it and never go.
I doubt I'll be visiting their website.

  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?

It is saying there are no additives - I didn't like the gossipy women at the hairdressers though, patronising.
  • Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?

Yes in that I assumed there were additives, they certainly look and taste as if there are.
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?

We are a current visitor.
  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

No this doesn't interest me.

What did you think of the overall message in the video?
The.message is clean and simple. 100% beef and nothing else. You can believe it or not but it's hard for a brand to get the public to trust them. Trust is built up over time, not with just one ad.

  • Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?

Not really. I eat at McDonald's. It's never a 'healthy' option and no matter how hard you try people will never be suckered into believing this.
  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?

The message is that our burgers are not as bad as you think.
It changed my perceptions a little. The meat is not as poor quality as I imagined. However my other concerns about animal welfare are not really addressed. Nor are issues around Labour condition.
I am very unlikely to visit MCD with m children, as I do not want to eat there bringing vegetarian. The veggie options are poor and fattening.
If my children rely wAnted to go I would visit the good to know website first with them to be better informed.

I thought the video was trying to be cute and lighthearted but came across as fairly patronising and the scene with mum was stereotyping sexism.

It didn't really change my perception of their burgers. They are stating just one positive element of them and omitting all the negatives (understandably from their point of view!)

It has not made me want to visit McDonald's. My child is thankfully too young at the moment to be swayed by their advertising campaigns.

I might look at their website for more information but would probably be quite sceptical.

Didn't change my perception as there was no information new to me,but I can see it would be mildly informative to some.
We already visit MacDonalds about once a month when shopping/days out ds and dp and I loves it.
I would/Will visit the website-always useful to have more information.

It's good to know what's in a burger, but McDonalds have been saying this for years. I have no idea if those are good cuts of meat to use.

  • Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?

No, it's a consistent message.

  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?

We already go.

Not about burgers as this covers everything.

  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?

I can see what they are trying to do. Simple facts, simple message. The problems I have is that it is a little patronising and I always feel uneasy about kids 'learning' about the process of cow to burger as it glazes over the horrible part. I know you aren't really going to advertise that part but perhaps don't have a child as one of the main focal points.

  • Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?

Did not change my perception in the slightest. My perception is 'shrrugs' and meh

  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?

I am a rare visitor and it hasn't changed how often me and my daughter would visit.

  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

I would be interested as more information is better than less and you may change my perception, you never know.

I think the overall message is quite clear that actually McDonald's burgers simply contain 100% beef and nothing else. I think getting the correct information out there is good.

It hasn't changed my opinion as I am already a McDonald's visitor.
I think there is still a lot of bad press out there about McDonald's and I believe that as a treat the occasional McDonald's is fine.

I don't tend to look at company websites but I think it's a good idea to have a positive website for people to research if they wish.

I would still assume that the burgers are made with poor quality cuts and wonder where the beef really comes from

My kids aren't really that keen on McDonald's food but yes, improving the quality of the food would make me feel happier to take them occasionally

No additives and 100% beef. However, like others I did find it patronising, silly gossiping women really?

Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?
Not really

We already visit as a treat but stick to fish for dietary reasons

Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
No. Nothing they say will convince me McDonald's is a healthy option that should be eaten regularly. It is a treat but that level of salt and sugar couldn't be eaten on a regular basis.

Overall I didn't really like the tone of the video, thought it spoke down to you a bit. I am however surprised that the burgers are real meat, I've avoided McDonalds thinking it was all processed rubbish but the information has changed my mind. I probably will visit the site now to read more to decide what I'd let the kids have if we go

CheeseEMouse · 04/01/2016 15:09

Overall it was clear that the burgers are only made from beef, but as others have said I think it was patronising to women and a very unoriginal portrayal of "mum getting her hair done and gossiping". I wonder whether any of these will show us dad finding out incorrect nutritional information down the pub from his mate Gary and then be corrected (or something equally cliched).

It didn't change my perceptions and as a very occasional treat McDonald's is ok. Ditto what others have said about it being unlikely that I would specifically research on the website before going.

  • What did you think of the overall message in the video? It was a bit patronising tbh. Was it aimed at adults or children?

  • Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how? McDonalds are trying very hard to convince us their food is healthy. Maybe some of the individual ingredients aren't too bad but they are junk food. Fine as a rare treat but not really a nutritional choice. I'd like to know more about the salt/sugar content and why the bread doesn't go mouldy.

  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children? We go a few times a year and will continue to do so.

  • What did you think of the overall message in the video?

I agree that it was pretty patronising really.

  • Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?

No. I used to work in McDonald's so I've cooked millions of burgers. I know there's nothing particularly alarming about them but I really don't think they're very nice. They might be beef but they're very thin and cook alarmingly fast. The bread in the burger buns is genuinely disgusting (there is a reason it comes toasted) and the (bucket of) rehydrated pickled gherkins still gives me nightmares.

  • If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?

I only ever visit McDonald's if I'm in a motorway service station and the other choices are worse. The kids are not fans.

  • Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?

No.

- What did you think of the overall message in the video?
The video didn't really tell me anything.

- Did it change your perceptions of McDonalds’ Burgers at all? If so, how?
Not really.

- If you're not a current McDonald's visitor, having watched the video, do you think you'd now consider visiting McDonald's or visiting with your children?
Not really. The last time I went the burger tasted like cardboard and almost made me sick the taste was so bad (sorry McDonalds, but it did). Also they seem to have shrunk somewhat over the years and don't represent good value. I'm not into fast food much anyway, but I prefer the taste of Burger King when I do buy. I wouldn't take my children. I hide my unhealthy eating from them!

- Would you be interested in visiting the McDonald’s Good To Know website to find out more information?
I just had a quick look actually, and was glad because it stopped me ranting about how the beef isn't British Grin

What might make me give McDonalds another go is free range chicken and other meats coming under some sort of external welfare program (freedom foods would be a start). I always like to encourage that sort of positive step. I appreciate it can be hard to do this and stay competitive.
