Across the festive season, Microsoft Xbox would like to hear the top tips Mumsnetters have for getting the most out of Xbox One for all the family.

Here’s what they say: “Providing hours of endless family fun, the Xbox One is home to the greatest games – including family favourites ‘Minecraft Xbox One Edition’, ‘Forza Motorsport 6’ and ‘Ori and the Blind Forest’ – as well as popular entertainment apps such as BBC iPlayer and Netflix Kids.“

They’ve even included a tutorial video to help you set up your Xbox One. You can view it below.

So how do you and your family get the most out of your Xbox One? Do you gather round the sofa to build a virtual world together on Minecraft? Maybe you challenge each other to FIFA football competitions? Perhaps you use the apps on your console to watch Christmas movies as a family? Have you any advice for parents considering buying an Xbox One this Christmas? Whatever your tips are, Microsoft wants to know.

Everyone who posts on this thread with their tips will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck,
MNHQ

You don't need to register it with your bank. Never ever hook it up to your bank under any circumstances. You can buy the credits you need at any game shop.

My husband has an X Box 360 which he is looking to upgrade, so far our kids haven't got a clue, but the X Box Connect has been pretty good for them as they don't need to use any complicated buttons on controllers. They have no idea what they are doing but the graphics are engaging and keeps them entertained for hours. They are only 2 and 3.5 yrs old :)

It's worth putting any codes that come with the system that you won't use on ebay.

We got £50 yesterday between fifa16 code, two weeks Xbox live membership code, and a months now TV code. All sold withing five mins of listing. DD still had two games that that came with system and can now buy another or two with the money she got from selling the other codes.

One niggle I did have, right after setting up a pegi 18 logo came up and an advert for an 18 rated game played. It wasn't graphic and ok for dd 10, but may not be for younger children.

Pre-install all of the new games a couple of days before you intend for it to be gifted or played, some games can take hours to download which can be a pain when you want to play them

We subscribe to XBox Gold Live which is great - free games which is ideal as a treat for the kids! My son doesn't know the password to log into our account so it is very safe and secure - he has his own account which he can play the games but not purchase anything. My son just got Disney Infinity for Christmas which is a really good game as you can add characters to the set as and when. We get a lof of use out of the XBox One and so pleased we puchased this!

I dont own one at my house but my little brother does at my mums house and they have it set up in the living room with netflix, iplayer and amazon instant video loaded on it so they have instant access to loads of good, affordable streaming services when he's not playing games

We received an Xbox one yesterday for our Christmas we are absolutely delighted!!!!
Make sure you validate any codes within the box for games or for a free trial of online gaming!
Sometimes you are cheaper buying games online through microsoft rather than buying from stores because online gives you more add ons and bonus levels :) Brilliant Happy Gaming

A decent internet connection is a must, we struggled with Sky Broadband so moved to Virgin Media fibre broadband and it's so much better. We play games, stream TV and movies as well as watching DVDs. It's an all round entertainment centre.

There is an xbox one in the living room, the only thing me and the dds use it for is netflix.

Dd1 has an xbox 360, she used to enjoy playing games on it, but now she only uses it for netflix.

The kids play DVDs through it. It's in the conservatory so my husband goes away in his man cave to play his games, so I get some peace!!!

Stick to age appropriate games and get the kids to play games with the connect. And give time limits with supervision at all times. We have a xbox one bit but we only let the children on very occasionally .

My 14 year old son has the Xbox One. Games take a while to download so if you are getting one for a present you need to set it up first so they can play straight away. We all play Minecraft on it and Farming Simulator which is a great game if you enjoy farming

My husband loves his Xbox one. Thankfully the children are too young for it at the moment but I always make sure he plays child friendly games while they are around. Some of the games are so gory and violent and I don't want my 2.5 year old even glancing at the screen.

My husband does get annoyed with the updates though. He says they are far too frequent and really big so take ages to download.

Best way to save space as you can do so much on it, I didn't even realise it had a blu-ray player!
