Across the festive season, Microsoft Xbox would like to hear the top tips Mumsnetters have for getting the most out of Xbox One for all the family.

Here’s what they say: “Providing hours of endless family fun, the Xbox One is home to the greatest games – including family favourites ‘Minecraft Xbox One Edition’, ‘Forza Motorsport 6’ and ‘Ori and the Blind Forest’ – as well as popular entertainment apps such as BBC iPlayer and Netflix Kids.“

They’ve even included a tutorial video to help you set up your Xbox One. You can view it below.

So how do you and your family get the most out of your Xbox One? Do you gather round the sofa to build a virtual world together on Minecraft? Maybe you challenge each other to FIFA football competitions? Perhaps you use the apps on your console to watch Christmas movies as a family? Have you any advice for parents considering buying an Xbox One this Christmas? Whatever your tips are, Microsoft wants to know.

Everyone who posts on this thread with their tips will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck,
MNHQ

My kids had an Xbox One on Christmas Day - after this thread I was worried about it taking forever to download FIFA 16 for example.
No major issues whatsoever , and i've got impatient kids!
Disappointed that no headset with the 500GB console.

DH has an Xbox One.

Definitely recommend looking at the apps on offer. Netflix. Blinkbox. Amazon Instant Video. 4od etc YouTube. Spotify. Skype. Twitch... There are SO many but these are the ones we use the most.

There really is something for everyone on this console. From role playing games. First person shooters. Family games. Trivial pursuit and monopoly etc! Lots of entertainment, ways to connect with friends and family.

It's not just a games console! ;) So make sure you have a good look around at everything on there and you can pin apps to your home page for easy access!

Ours sat in the box for over 2 weeks, until I paid next door's teen £10 to set it up. Even then, it took a while.
I spent £160 on Lego Infinity. It's still a bit complex for 6 year old, so plan to pick up a standard Lego game, as recommended on here.
I think it will come in to it's own, when we get used to it - we had to buy a TV plus the internet just to run it, so it's all very new to us.

I meant to say, that I'm not even familiar with what all the film and TV channels are, as I haven't had one for years. I was pleasantly surprised to find that we were able tho watch the Dr Who Xmas special through it. Didn't recognise anyone, mind...

We don't have an Xbox one, so I am interested to read other people's tips, as DS would like to get one.

We use ours as a complete entertainment system in our bedroom and the kids use it sitting on our bed. We use Netflix & DVD's through it

Download games before you tell the kids and overnight- can take a long time!

My boys love the games that you get on Xbox but they have no interest in Kinect.

Downloading games in advance if the X box is such a good idea. Saves time and stress. Children want to play straight away!

We already had a 360 and bought a new Xbox one for 13 yo ds birthday a few months ago. He knew exactly which version he wanted (not Kinect). He loves it and his brothers love that they get the 360! Had a technical problem with the new one and after all the setting up it had to be returned for a replacement which was very frustrating for my son but he got over it. He's very pleased with it. A couple of new games for Xmas and he's happy.
I would second previous comments about having more complex games for 10-16 year olds that challenge their brains but aren't all about blood and guts.

I second what some others have said, download updates beforehand if possible as they take a while and kids can be a tad impatient on xmas morning when they just want to play on their new console, I know my DS is!!

I have no experience of an xbox one but I'd love to be able to buy one for my great niece when she's a little older. She's only 2 at the moment so I think she's too young for one now

We don't own one, but Dh and my sons really, really want one.

I'm waiting until the dc are a bit older. I don't know how many games are suitable for younger children. So more family games please.
Being able to watch TV through it sounds great - as long as there is another TV in the house so that I can watch something else.
