Across the festive season, Microsoft Xbox would like to hear the top tips Mumsnetters have for getting the most out of Xbox One for all the family.

Here’s what they say: “Providing hours of endless family fun, the Xbox One is home to the greatest games – including family favourites ‘Minecraft Xbox One Edition’, ‘Forza Motorsport 6’ and ‘Ori and the Blind Forest’ – as well as popular entertainment apps such as BBC iPlayer and Netflix Kids.“

They’ve even included a tutorial video to help you set up your Xbox One. You can view it below.

                   <iframe src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/SqS6pRmE_kk" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

So how do you and your family get the most out of your Xbox One? Do you gather round the sofa to build a virtual world together on Minecraft? Maybe you challenge each other to FIFA football competitions? Perhaps you use the apps on your console to watch Christmas movies as a family? Have you any advice for parents considering buying an Xbox One this Christmas? Whatever your tips are, Microsoft wants to know.

Everyone who posts on this thread with their tips will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck,
MNHQ

think of it as more than a gaming device, its much much more than that, my family had an Xbox one for a while now, its used for family games, Our virgin box runs through it so we watch television on it, use it for Netflix and BBC Iplayer to catchup on progammes you've missed my son has a has a huge collection of films on his computer which we can easily send to the Xbox and watch on the large screen tv in the front room, great for popcorn family nights in!

maryandbuzz1 · 26/12/2015 09:15

We love it for gaming but like other MN's we use it for Netflix and AMAZON Prime. I have been surprised that although bought as a present for my son the whole family have had use out of it.
Downloading games is a pain and wish I had thought of downloading before it was given as a present.

muppet1501 · 26/12/2015 09:30

Had an xbox one now for a year. My son mostly uses it but my daughters like playing minecraft. I do like the fact when you use the kinect you have no fear of the controller swinging into the TV like the Wii as it just scans your body. You can get several things on the dashboard including bbc iplayer and youtube so you can always watch things on demand through your tv. I do wish they'd bring more family games out for it. We have Just dance but i'd like quizzes, educational and singing games so i can join in with my kids.

The Lego games are great fun for all the family so no one will feel left out.

Also, the XBOX is not just a games console, you can access iPlayer and Netflix so can entertain the family in more ways than one

hiddenmichelle · 26/12/2015 10:03

have a fun family knock out competition

GrimmauldPlace · 26/12/2015 10:21

My DH and I have one each as we like to play multiplayer games together online. Easily the best thing about the xbox one is the family sharing. We only need one xbox live gold membership, whereas on the 360 we used to have to buy individual ones for each gamertag. We can also share downloaded games. So any multiplayer games we both want to play at the same time we only need to purchase one copy (as long as it's a digital copy). Has saved us so much money!
Having to install everything before playing is a bit of a pain, however games run much better once installed and loading times are reduced.
Make sure you have a decent Internet connection.

I saw this thread on christmas eve and had a panic because I had bought the xbox one with the fifa 16 downloadable game for DS and hadn't thought about installing it beforehand but it only took about an hour for it to update and download the game.
DS loves fifa but hopefully he will let me have a go on minecraft later and I am going to be looking in the sales for some of the Lego games, we used to play them on the wii but haven't tried them on the xbox yet.

BoltonBex · 26/12/2015 11:02

Joining Xbox live so you can play with friends and family who live far away

madge47 · 26/12/2015 11:06

if you get an xbox one you need fast internet otherwise takes days to do updates and load games.

Simey68 · 26/12/2015 11:18

Recently purchased a Xbox, wow what an incredible console, great graphics, brilliant games, plus you can get services like Netflix through it as well.Technology is going ahead so fast now it makes you wonder what it will be like in 20 years

wooohooo · 26/12/2015 12:00

We bought our son one for Christmas,He Is computer mad,we bought him a gaming PC two years ago,he set It up himself so Idont have to worry about setting the xbox up
If I have a problem with my laptop he fixes It

cazzzie987 · 26/12/2015 12:14

I must say the voice commands are great.

lilmiztam22 · 26/12/2015 12:16

we love the additional features. Game consoles today are not just for gaming anymore, the voice commands are so clever and we love to sit down and use the Xbox One for Netflix films

hannonle · 26/12/2015 12:21

My sister got one for my nephews because the controllers are easier for them to hold and use than the Wii ones. They both like playing minecraft and are enjoying the advanced bit where you can enter a random number and be in a pre-made world with villagers. They had it for a while before figuring that bit out.
My tip would be not to get carried away by those games such as skylanders that have additional figurines to buy. (I'm not sure which ones are available on xbox, but the figurines are an extra expense and you'll need to be able to say no or to limit your purchases or you'll spend a fortune.)

wjanice121 · 26/12/2015 12:22

We take ours on holiday with us because we can log into our SKY tv package at home through it.

iut044 · 26/12/2015 12:25

Have a fast internet connection for downloading large patches for games .

Cailin7 · 26/12/2015 13:12

Our DS's have an xbox one and the updates can take a while but they like to do investigate and set up new devices them selves. And the load time is not like it was with a Commodore 64, the fun!

lionheart · 26/12/2015 13:30

I am going to buy a second one to keep the peace. Smile

Got caught out by the hackers last Christmas but fortunately, the Dcs didn't mind waiting for it all to settle before they could enjoy their present. Hope the security has improved.

Liquorice13 · 26/12/2015 13:35

Bought one in November for hubby for Christmas, when I got it he wanted to check it worked ok and downloaded the FIFA16 as he said it takes ages. I would recommend testing these things before Christmas just in case they are faulty. 7 year old daughter loves Monopoly, so want to get her that together with Just Dance so all family can join in

mooota1514 · 26/12/2015 13:49

I definitely recommend getting it out and downloading any updates and games before Christmas.
It took hours to put the big update on (that makes some 360 games backward compatible) if we hadn't have done that then DSS wouldn't have got any play time on it pm Christmas Day.

burstlikeabubble · 26/12/2015 13:49

I don't have an Xbox One but I do have a PS4.

The Xbox One is a helluva lot bigger in size than the PS4 and both have pretty much the same games but i've been told that the Xbox is better for online multiplayer play.

There are a few exclusive games on both consoles that might sway your decision for example Halo and Forza games on Xbox but not on PS4 although PS4 gets the Uncharted, Little Big Planet and The Last Of Us games.

Both are great for using apps such as Netflix plus can watch Blu rays and DVDs.

bevmcomp · 26/12/2015 14:06

The Xbox one in my opinion as more Leaner, more games-focused UI, Excellent apps, services and entertainment features, great exclusive titles and helps the children in many ways, whether it's learning or communicating it opens up conversation all around the world.. If there are no friends around you can play somebody else in a different country.. I really think they help in many ways..

farhanac · 26/12/2015 14:10

Great for Netflix

ImmortalBeloved72 · 26/12/2015 14:21

Santa forgot to bring one this year so although I can comment I cannot help

finleypop · 26/12/2015 14:28

Once you have registered your account with your bank details. Go back & remove details. We were hacked & had not realised that we could remove our details after registration was completed. We were reimbursed, but the account was frozen for a week whilst it was investigated

Don't just use it for games, you can watch DVD's Netfilx & much more.
