Old Mutual Wealth has asked us to find out the best pieces of advice Mumsnetters have ever been given.

Here’s what they say, “Old Mutual Wealth is a big advocate of advice. In life and in financial matters, the guidance of someone you trust can make the difference between failure and success.”

So, what’s the best piece of advice someone's given you? Maybe someone has shared a genuinely life changing tip? Perhaps they passed on the secret on how to get your kids to clean their room/go to sleep/eat their greens. We’d also, more specifically, like to hear about the best financial piece of advice you’ve ever received. Whether it’s on how to save? Or maybe on what to do with your savings? Whatever they are, we’d love to hear them!

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher!

Thanks

My mum told me that life is 10% of what happens and 90% of how you react to it/deal with it. I now think this was a very good piece of advice and reminds me a lot when i am not sure how to deal with situations that it is always better to pick yourself up and get on.

love yourself before you can love others

Overpay your mortgage whenever you can. If you do this in the good times, you are giving yourself a lot of breathing space in tough financial times. And if you manage to avoid the tough times you'll pay your mortgage off earlier and pay far less interest!

clarem100 · 12/10/2015 14:18

Don't think once, don't think twice, think three times and see if you really need it.

Gilla01 · 12/10/2015 14:57

If you can't criticize constructively don't criticize at all.

Keep you legs crossed and your hands on your purse

When it comes to spending, there's a big difference between "want" and "need". Learn which is which and really think before buying a "want".

Two pieces of advice 'divorce him' and 'take no prisoners'

kpdchudleigh · 12/10/2015 15:48

My Dad told me "Never ask a barber whether you need a haircut". It seemed odd to me at the time but I remembered it and as I've gotten older I must say he was spot on.

farhanac · 12/10/2015 15:55

Just keep smiling

rkoya2001 · 12/10/2015 16:05

Be yourself never change for anyone

angiehoggett · 12/10/2015 16:37

Accept help! I was so eager to do everything myself, I eventually listened and realised family and friends are there to help and it's not a sign of failure when you need some help.

Ikea1234 · 12/10/2015 16:43

I was told once that "What's meant for you won't pass you by", and it really has helped in all sorts of situations. When I don't get that 'dream' job for example......something better always came along!

starlight68 · 12/10/2015 16:45

Listen to others but make your own decisions.

lindseystuart85 · 12/10/2015 16:50

The best advice I received was "No such word as can't, you will succeed if you don't give up"
My wonderful granny gave me this advice more than once and i took note and have done myself proud I hope my granny can see the results of her great advice :)

lphillips25 · 12/10/2015 16:58

the best piece of advice was from my friend when i was agonising over whether it was the right time to start a family...she said to me if you waited until everything is perfect you will never have a family , as nothing is perfect! we had our daughter the following year and i am sooo glad i listened to her advice.

When i passed my driving test, many years ago, My dad (a taxi driver) said if you are 1st in the queue of a red traffic light, when it turns green "count to 5 before you go", because theres a good possibility some one will jump a red light, Its always stuck in my mind, and amazingly he was correct many times over.

hannonle · 12/10/2015 17:34

Parenting wise - If they're poorly, any food is better than no food. If they live on biscuits for two days then so be it!

General - Trust your instincts.

Lauzipop1 · 12/10/2015 18:03

Don't worry about things that are way out of your control. In fact if you are worrying you're living in the future when you should be living for the today.

AnimalAddict · 12/10/2015 18:17

Never cry over someone who wouldn't cry over you. :)
