Old Mutual Wealth has asked us to find out the best pieces of advice Mumsnetters have ever been given.

Here’s what they say, “Old Mutual Wealth is a big advocate of advice. In life and in financial matters, the guidance of someone you trust can make the difference between failure and success.”

So, what’s the best piece of advice someone's given you? Maybe someone has shared a genuinely life changing tip? Perhaps they passed on the secret on how to get your kids to clean their room/go to sleep/eat their greens. We’d also, more specifically, like to hear about the best financial piece of advice you’ve ever received. Whether it’s on how to save? Or maybe on what to do with your savings? Whatever they are, we’d love to hear them!

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher!

Thanks

Save save save, I was told to save as much as I can afford, and this is what I will always pass on to anyone in my family

sweetsomethings · 12/10/2015 11:14

never go to sleep on an argument. Always tell people you love them as you never know when you will see them again

gamerwidow · 12/10/2015 11:28

Save as much as you can so you always have a safety net in case the unexpected happens.

From my Nan..'If you buy cheap, you buy twice.' It's certainly proved true for my Children's school shoes!

Be kind to yourself.

lizd31 · 12/10/2015 11:45

Mine is a philosophy which I have always lived by 'if you see someone without a smile give them yours'

FawcettSA · 12/10/2015 12:00

Be the best version of yourself that you can be

Everything happens for a reason, you may not just know why yet

Don't Worry, Be Happy (That was from Bob Marley!:)

"Sleep on it" - this advice has to be the best advice ever. It has stopped me making stupid decisions based on my emotions rather than what is logical, practical and down right common sense. It has also stopped me from doing some things that I might regret, or get caught doing in response to evil acts by twisted individuals. Sometimes emotions can affect your own mind and the decision you take at that particular time is not the decision you would take if your wiser self had time to chew it over and a good rest! In fact, if the phrase "Sleep on it" couldnt be taken another way I would have it printed up on a t-shirt! haha

Best piece of advice was that when you are in financial difficulty you always pay your rent and council tax before anything else.

jazzitup · 12/10/2015 12:49

Always wear clean undercrackers :o)

Spencer1234 · 12/10/2015 12:49

Always be nice to people as you never know what secret battles others may be fighting

janeyf1 · 12/10/2015 12:52

Best piece of advice I was given was to ensure I budget and stick to it but making a note on pen & paper. It is more important to be able to budget than how much you earn in the first place.

Don't be afraid of being outnumbered. Eagles fly alone. Pigeons flock together.

Yield to overcome - in other words accept what is to change it. :)

purpleluvbug · 12/10/2015 13:37

To get a bedtime routine sorted for the children. I has made such a change. The kids know when its time for bed, and we no longer have tantrums.

We have 2 family sayings which are pretty good for alot of situations! "panic ye not" and "this too will pass". No matter what kind of situation you find yourself in panic never helps, you need to keep a clear head to deal with it properly. "This too will pass" when you're in the puffy eyed, weepy snotty pits of misery, whatever it is will not always feel as bad as it does then! Its sort of a hint of hope.
The funny thing is with them being family sayings, when you have the crisis and tell yourself those things, you feel like you're getting the support and love from the family just by saying them which seems to be instantly a nice feeling.
