Old Mutual Wealth has asked us to find out the best pieces of advice Mumsnetters have ever been given.

Here’s what they say, “Old Mutual Wealth is a big advocate of advice. In life and in financial matters, the guidance of someone you trust can make the difference between failure and success.”

So, what’s the best piece of advice someone's given you? Maybe someone has shared a genuinely life changing tip? Perhaps they passed on the secret on how to get your kids to clean their room/go to sleep/eat their greens. We’d also, more specifically, like to hear about the best financial piece of advice you’ve ever received. Whether it’s on how to save? Or maybe on what to do with your savings? Whatever they are, we’d love to hear them!

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher!

Thanks

Start your pension as soon as you start working

My Mum always use to say 'everything happens for a reason' and I truly believe this. Even when something upsetting has happened, it does always seem to lead to a more positive path

"Tomorrow is another day!"

My said this to me after I had my eldest and it has always stuck with me!!

With babies/children it's hard not to see the end when you are going through a particularly gruelling stage, whether it's sleepless nights with teething babies to day length toddler tantrums to multiple vomiting children. However I have always kept in the back of my head this day/stage will not last forever, tomorrow it could be completely different and most of the time it is! It's got me through some tough times and I hope when I pass it on to my own daughters it sees them through a few frustrating days too!!

Never spend too long looking at the past as you will only miss the opportunities in front of you

seeingdouble2 · 12/10/2015 09:43

Every thing happens for a reason. (when you sit and think about why ""it"" happened it drives you crazy with what if I ???)

createbeauty · 12/10/2015 09:44

Don't spend what you don't have.

My mom used to say Treat others how you would like to be treated, the world would be a much happier place if we all did this.

From my Dad- You want shoes and handbags, not springs and tyres (when referring to me driving too fast down his bumpy old track of a drive).

LinnyBee · 12/10/2015 10:10

My dad always said 'Don't be afraid to fail' - this has happened quite a few times, but I will have a go at anything I want to do and never regret it.

pgwynne · 12/10/2015 10:14

Treat people how you wish to be treated.

emiai · 12/10/2015 10:26

Everyone has their own ideas of how things should be done.. The baby should be fed this way, you should wear that colour with those shoes.. Use this product to clean that, doing this will save you money..

Well no! Others are not always right.. and my midwife spotted that my family were making me sad after the birth of my first child, constantly nagging at me as a first time mum to make sure everything was just so..

She took me to one side and said the best advice she was ever given was this.. "Smile.. and listen to what people say, tell them that's a great idea, and thank them - always be the bigger person, and make others feel that they have contributed - even if they are talking out of their backsides!"

I smiled and thanked her, and you know.. its the ONLY advice that was worth mentioning here, and something I have lived by ever since.

jacd77 · 12/10/2015 10:34

The best advice i ever got off my gran was, trust your gut feeling, if it doesnt feel right dont do it.

prwilson · 12/10/2015 10:43

When something means everything, play like it means nothing.

hiddenmichelle · 12/10/2015 10:51

Not to worry about what what people think too much - the older I get, I know that no-one else has the right to judge me, and as long as I am not hurting anyone else, my life is just that, and I do not have to simply do what is expected!

devito92 · 12/10/2015 10:56

Find a hobby you enjoy and try and involve the whole family

Oliversmumsarmy · 12/10/2015 10:59

When at work make sure your tea and coffee making skills are appalling.

meggysar · 12/10/2015 11:00

Never spend what you haven't got!

goose1964 · 12/10/2015 11:02

let your children make their own mistakes but be there for them when they need you

sofieellis · 12/10/2015 11:10

When my babies were little, my Mum told me not to stress about housework. She said the children wouldn't remember if the ironing was done, or if the windows had been cleaned that day. They would remember cuddles and love and playtime with Mummy though. Smile

nigelh66 · 12/10/2015 11:12

Treat others how you would like to be treated :)
