We've been asked by the team at Sainsbury's to find out how Mumsnetters put a twist on their favourite midweek recipes.

Sainsbury's say "As a nation we cook over 5 billion midweek meals a year - and Sainsbury's is passionate about offering great quality, everyday food to inspire households that are cooking the meals that matter to Britain. The store cupboard is a goldmine of interesting twists in waiting. With more ingredients available than ever before, now is the time to reclaim the store cupboard and start experimenting!"

So, how do you put a twist on your favourite recipe? Maybe you add balsamic vinegar to a pasta bake? Or perhaps you add some chilli to a shepherds pie? Maybe you've even added peanut butter to a stir fry?

Whatever your top twists are for your weeknight meals, Sainsbury's would love to hear about them. Take a look at the Sainsbury's Homemade website for inspiration and to see what twists they've suggested.

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a £300 Sainsbury's voucher to spend in store or online at sainsburys.co.uk.

Please note your comments may be included on Sainsbury's social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks and good luck,

I love adding marmite to dishes for extra flavour - I think it goes best in a mushroom risotto. Also adds some extra protein too

Cailin7 · 19/09/2015 21:28

worcestershire sauce in sheperds pie and ketchup in the bolognese and mustard in the mash. Not all together at same time!

zatuns · 19/09/2015 22:05

My kids will eat anything with cheese !! so just sprinkling some on top of a leftover meal like mash or lasagne and just toasting with cheese on top.

If I have some bananas going off I mash them and add to them to cake mixture to make a quick and easy banana loaf.

rainbowvalley · 19/09/2015 22:19

I add white vinegar to gravies to make them tangy and sharp. Add grated Nutmeg to brussel sprouts. Put baked beans in chilli Con Carne and quite often put homous in my mash potatoes to make them taste nutty.

Happyjad · 19/09/2015 22:23

Add pomegranate to my rice, marmite mixed with egg on my pie crusts, curry powder on my cheese on toast!

galaxygirl1 · 19/09/2015 22:33

I add a little curry powder to some beans on toast. It turns a humble supper into something really tasty and moreish.

If I have any leftover garlic cloves I always cook them with mushrooms and quinoa! Wasn't sure if it'd work but you never know, and luckily it did. Using coconut sugar instead of other sugars and we use grape seed oil instead of olive oil, that bit better for you but your food tastes exactly the same! In shepherds pie we like to have a mixture of about half meat and half lentils, and sometimes full lentils, just so it's that little bit healthier. We take our health very seriously in this household if you hadn't guessed ;)

A tablespoon of cranberry sauce to chicken gravy is delicious.

Chorizo fried off and added to macaroni cheese.

Toasted pecans and lemon zest tossed with butter and steamed broccoli & French beans mix is scrummy.

Balsamic glaze over Provençal chicken thighs add a lovely sweet flavour.

Our meals during the week are never boring and it's always easy to find something in our full spice cupboard to pep up a meal. We love hot foods and adding some cayenne pepper and a little sprinkle of other spices to some potatoes cut up ready for fries and baked in the oven are sooo good and go with so many meals.

clarem100 · 20/09/2015 08:32

we have a whole cupboard of herbs and spices that I use to vary meals

CK12232 · 20/09/2015 10:12

I use sweet potato on top of shepherd's pie rather than normal potatoes. This can be a bit sickly so I usually add goat's cheese to the top so some of the sweetness is taken out by the tartness of the cheese. It's a winner in our house!

alsproject · 20/09/2015 10:49

Adding mustard or horseradish into mash make it go even better with pork chops

happysouls · 20/09/2015 10:57

I eat quite alot of evening meals that are sandwiches, or rivita with soft cheese, together with salad and fruit. I try to keep it varied but simple. The best thing I do to keep it interesting and tasty is I make a batch of carrot salad at the weekend and put it in single portion tubs and it makes enough for the week. Its made with 2 bags of grated carrots, lemon juice, cardemom seeds, a red chilli, root ginger, garlic and a red onion. Its just magic stuff!

bossladysal1 · 20/09/2015 11:14

I often use minced turkey instead of beef for spag bol, lasagne etc. It's lean and tasty.

bossladysal1 · 20/09/2015 11:18

I use dried onions when making soups and I also add Vegeta which is a Croatian spice mix. This is great for spicing up stews and casseroles as well.

Annimousey · 20/09/2015 12:58

We add marmite to Spaghetti Bolognaise. It adds something special and gives it an extra 'kick.'

kerryv · 20/09/2015 13:09

Add Worcester sauce... I do to pretty much everything x

vixxx666 · 20/09/2015 14:06

Using a different shaped pasta than usual and / or adding a brightly coloured veg, like a coloured bell pepper to brighten it up a little!

FrenchieMum2Be · 20/09/2015 14:36

I add fresh broccoli to macaroni chese, it makes it lovely and it goes further :)

MrRichTea · 20/09/2015 15:39

Chilli in mid-week meals always spices up our dinners :)

phillie1 · 20/09/2015 15:54

Philadelphia into mash potato and risotto's

Clairemike21 · 20/09/2015 17:18

I keep frozen herbs in ice cube trays to add some instant flavour when cooking.

beckyinman · 20/09/2015 17:25

Dark chocolate melted in chilli or a spoon of curry paste in baked beans

Marg2k8 · 20/09/2015 18:20

Trying new vegetables to go with meals.

exLtEveDallas · 20/09/2015 18:31

I make different gravy sauces; alway deglaze the pan that the meat has been cooked in, but:

With pork - deglaze with apple juice
With chicken - use cranberry juice
With beef - use cherry juice (or cherry Coke)
With lamb - use redcurrent or cranberry and raspberry

I do the same with Sunday dinners, but usually add a stock cube as well.
