We've been asked by the team at MoneySuperMarket to find out about the weirdest things Mumsnetters have found when moving in to a new home, which the previous owners or tenants left behind.

MoneySuperMarket say "We know moving home can be a stressful experience and sometimes it can be accompanied a few unexpected and 'interesting' surprises at the other end! Whether you've recently moved home or not, we'd love to hear your stories on the thread below.

Also - for those of you in the process of moving right now, don't forget to check out our Home Mover's hub, where you'll find a wealth of articles, videos and tools designed to get you to your own personal 'Happily Ever After' just that little bit quicker..."

So, what weird or wonderful things have you found when moving? Maybe the previous owner of your house left behind a particularly impressive stamp collection? Or perhaps you found a stack of old diaries? Or maybe you found a wig hidden in the back of the wardrobe?

Whatever you've found, MoneySuperMarket would love to hear about it!

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw* where one winner will receive a £300 Love2Shop voucher from Mumsnet.

Please note your comments may be included on MoneySuperMarket's social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks and good luck,
MNHQ

Loving this thread. No oddities to report here unless you count a feral cat and kittens in the shed.

Two flattish boxes which held Masonic aprons and special certificate/deed type things from the Masons.

seeingdouble2 · 18/09/2015 22:54

A load of porn in the attic! (shocking I tell you!!)

FrenchieMum2Be · 18/09/2015 23:13

We found a ready made Christmas tree in the basement of our first rented home together. It actually looked like it had been put up for Christmas and retired after the festivities complete with dusty tinsel and working lights!

buckley1983 · 18/09/2015 23:20

Still retching about the toenails :(
In one house I rented, I found a pair of mens pants behind the radiator.
When I was in a student house - the property was furnished - when I moved the bed, there was a load of porn mags underneath. My male housemates were delighted!
In our current house - when we removed the skirting boards - there was a Sun newspaper from 1990.
Spotting a theme here??

We found a CROWBAR!!! it really did make us wonder. There was also this weird stick with a tiny hole in the end and it literally took us years to figure out what it was for. The previous owners had made it as a way of lighting the fire without having to get too close so the little hole was perfect for a match to fit in it and then you could use the stick to reach over to light the fire - strange but true!

A can opener in the loo!

bowsaw · 19/09/2015 14:27

just got the keys to a house and amongst a range of tat was a rain damaged piano thats wheels have seized in the dinning room and rotting food in the kitchen cupboards

PuckyMup · 19/09/2015 15:19

Gin it might have been one of those seeds that appear on antiques roadshow from time to time - they only come from one specific island and are rare. Can't think of what they are called.

I do love the inventory and photo of the ladybirds. . so cute!

SuzCG · 19/09/2015 17:02

Not weird, but really unexpected - the old people had left 'brand new toys for the new children to enjoy in their new home' when we moved in. How very thoughtful! Kids thought it was great!!

myusername12345 · 19/09/2015 18:00

A stopcock that was unrelated to any of the water pipes, and a water pipe that spurted water into the kitchen whenever someone ran the sink taps.

squishee · 19/09/2015 18:40

Our kitchen sink overflow hole that is just a hole leading straight into the cupboard beneath. Genius Hmm

In a previous place: a big turd in the loo Angry

cressetmama · 19/09/2015 19:29

Not my story but my grandparents moved in 1940 to the house I remember as a child and one day they opened a cupboard that had been overlooked, and found 200 jars of honey. As it was wartime, and sugar was rationed for the next six years, it came in handy.

Coffeechick · 19/09/2015 21:18

We found a suitcase full of old clothes in the shed with stains on them and some of them had stuff growing on the stains so I think some stains may have been food.

morethanacondiment · 19/09/2015 21:23

Odd socks down the back of every radiator - hundreds of 'em. And a whole kitchen drawer stuffed full of keys; we couldn't see the bottom because there were so many. Not a single one fitted the only room I would ever want to lock though!

Igneococcus · 19/09/2015 21:33

When I painted the kitchen in my first flat I found a wedding cake hidden away on top of a cupboard. It looked like a cheap one, not custom made, with a little plasticky couple on top, it wasn't wrapped and covered in a thick layer of dust.

leccybill · 19/09/2015 21:39

Not weird, but nice - we found a notecard with 'Recipe for a happy home' addressed to the previous elderly occupants when they moved in. I hope it was happy for them, it certainly has been for us.

zatuns · 19/09/2015 22:31

I'd love to say an original piece by Monet but I'd be lying!!

I went upstairs and in the back bedroom there was a little doll which looked as though it had been left behind. At closer inspection it has horrendous!! almost a witch like ugly voodoo type doll, black scraggly hair and black torn clothes and with an evil face. i recall picking it up very quickly and throwing it out of the back window as far as I could!

dontmesswithmytutu · 19/09/2015 22:41

I kid you not, a dolphin shaped vibrator in the back of a drawer.

chrin · 19/09/2015 22:56

Under the floorboards in the bedroom of one house I moved to there was old newspapers, empty drink cans and sweet and crisp packets. We only found it as the boards squeaked and we went to med them otherwise we would never have known

CointreauVersial · 20/09/2015 00:21

A massive pair of white knickers behind one of the radiators.

SwedeDreams · 20/09/2015 08:47

A mattress, buried in the garden. We wondered why the patch of grass was springy. So thoughtful of them!

Spurtle · 20/09/2015 08:55

Twelve enormous glass bottles/jars in the attic - the kind that would be used for making home brew I think. Each one would've held at least 50l, they were massive. We've lived here ten years and they're still there, would seem a shame to chuck them out.
