British Lion Eggs have asked us to find out what Mumsnetters’ weaning recipes are.

Here’s what they say, “Dr Juliet Gray, registered nutritionist, says, ‘The current evidence suggests that mums looking to wean their babies can be encouraged to introduce eggs from six months as an early weaning food, as this could have a positive effect in terms of nutritional intake and may also help promote immune tolerance of eggs.’"

“In the past there has been doubt surrounding egg consumption by pregnant women and babies. It was recommended that these groups avoid eating eggs that were not fully cooked because of the small risk of salmonella. Since the British Lion scheme was introduced in 1998, however, these risks have been effectively eliminated from Lion-marked eggs.”

“The Food Standards Agency is currently reviewing the evidence relating to the safety of eggs in the UK with results expected in 2016. The British Egg Industry Council says that the safety record of British Lion eggs means that vulnerable groups should now be allowed to consume them when runny.”

So, what are your top egg weaning recipes? Have you ever weaned your children on eggs before? If so, how did you find it? Did you scramble, boil or make omelettes? Or maybe you make French toast for your LOs? Or perhaps pancakes have been a particular hit in your house? We’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences!

Everyone who posts their thoughts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 John Lewis voucher!

Thanks and good luck,

My friend gave her child a raw egg yolk as his first food. It's traditional in Chinese medicine apparently!

FloppyRagdoll · 08/09/2015 16:11

Hard-boiled eggs chopped up with a little butter in a cup; scrambled or poached eggs with grated cheddar, or little bits of feta; eggy bread, omelettes, frittatas, etc. Pancakes; and a savoury broth with strips of pancakes in it. Cornbread muffins.

A favourite dish was a savoury rice dish with whatever vegetables were to hand, some raisins and homemade chutney, then little dents made for an egg to cook in the middle of the rice. I still make it now (its official name is "Mum's Egg Rice Thingy")- these days with curry or other spices.

Eggy bread and scrambled egg were favourites. In fact, they still are and my boys are far older now.

Dippy egg was popular, but messy. We love eggs.

StickChildNumberTwo · 08/09/2015 20:07

Pancakes have always been a hit round here, as are fried eggs - I think we introduced both of those pretty early on. A later addition to the favourites list was dippy eggs - glad to hear runny eggs are safe.

DD loved eggy bread (french toast) with cherry tomatoes cut in half.

Omelette strips or scrambled egg, with bread & butter, & some slices of pear or apple.

ohhelpohnoitsa · 08/09/2015 21:54

I had to "hide" eggs with dc1 and dc2 so things luke pancakes or french toast, tortilla and bread and butter pudding were all favourites. Dc2 also adored and still does, creme brulee and meringues. Dc3 on the other hand, boiled,fried,omlette... anything.
Their favourite is licking the spoon when baking .... yeah yeah raw egg but we all live to tell the tale.

Cherrybellyboo · 08/09/2015 22:54

Scrambled and boiled were favourites here, then fried egg after that.

I gave dd egg yolk as a weaning food, and eggy bread (french toast) Tnis was the last time she had egg without an allergic reaction. Sad

ds had his first scrambled egg aged seven years old. he likes boiled and fried too. he is discovering the delights of egg now that he is capable of not throwing around/dropping it everywhere, which could result in dd having an allergic reaction if she comes in contact.

Lillabet · 09/09/2015 10:26

Scrambled eggs, eggy bread soldiers, frittata and omelettes have all been used in this house for DC1 & 2 and will be used for DC3 when he's ready to wean (in about three months). Unfortunately DC1 no longer likes eggs (except in quiche, cakes, pancakes and meringues HmmConfusedGrin) but DC2 loves them, especially scrambled.
When I was expecting with all three I ate runny eggs as long as the white was cooked through and they were in date red lion eggs, I just never mentioned it to my midwives Grin.

DD (2years) and DS (10 months) both are happy egg eaters. It's such a gentle food and so nutritious, I tried to get eggs into their diet from fairly early on.
I find if they are ill, they are still happy to try some scrambled egg. Eggy bread is considered a big treat - although they are so impatient, there is lots of shouting as it cools down. I have started making scotch eggs (so the meat is better quality) which they love, and hard boiled eggs are a handy filling snack on their own.
Homemade custard is the next one to try!

FlukeSkyeRunner · 09/09/2015 14:17

Scrambled eggs

LikeSilver · 09/09/2015 20:27

Baby led weaned DS at 7 months has so far enjoyed scrambled egg, eggy bread, French toast, crepe, boiled egg, frittata, and I use eggs in pad Thai.

DD (also BLW) isn't really a fan of scrambled egg but loves a boiled egg and adores pancakes.

rachaelsit · 09/09/2015 20:52

I made and still make fritters, usually with cheese and a blitzed veg like carrot or mashed peas. Now I put all sorts in them and just grate it!

LittleLostRoeDeer · 09/09/2015 21:09

Another one who gave eggs early on. They're a staple for us as vegetarians - we need the protein! My go to recipes are:

  • microwave omelettes: 1 egg, bit of milk, cheese and butter, some chopped up tomatoes and spinach
  • mini pancakes: 3 tbsp of milk mixed with 3 tbsp of flour and 1 egg. Add whatever veggies leftovers I fancy. My 9 month old loves them. So does his dad...
  • peanut butter eggy bread
Hopezibah · 09/09/2015 23:15

my little girl adores egg - on holiday it was pretty much the only food she would eat as she was refusing everything else! Now she's a toddler her favourite it poached egg - which she calls 'white egg' as the yolk doesn't look so yellow until you break into it.

For weaning, dipping bread into orange juice and egg and then frying it makes a tasty eggy bread (with a little sugar or honey too) so it can be like a dessert recipe.

Quills · 10/09/2015 09:21

Cheesy frittata was a big hit with my two when weaning, as it was easy to cut it into strips and let them hold it. We mixed up 4 eggs, a generous amount of feta cheese, ham and peas, pop it in an ovenproof dish and then bake it until golden brown.

Tasty, and healthy too!

SerenaVanDerWoodsen · 10/09/2015 13:18

My two both loved eggs when weaning and beyond. Mainly scrambled egg with spinach and a little cheese for the first. The second had milk intolerance and we made spinach omelettes without milk or with a little hypoallergenic formula.

SarahatCraftInvaders · 10/09/2015 14:12

I used to make frittata for them to eat as finger food with veg such as potato and peas in it. Was perfect as I could cut it into sticks, plus anything that was dropped was pretty healthy for the dog too!

Newquay · 10/09/2015 15:38

The staple for us at the weekend is 'pancakes': 2 eggs with 1 banana - whizzed up in the Nutribullet - with kale (to make green monster pancakes), blueberries to make blue ones. I've yet to find something to make them go orange. I sometimes add peanut butter for extra protein. Massive hit with both weaning baby and my 4 year old.

'Muffins' with eggs courgette and cheese (no flour) in muffin trays are brilliant weaning food too.

Kathderoet · 10/09/2015 15:52

Well my kids loved a boiled egg, mashed up in a cup with some butter with soldiers to go with it. It was an easy way for them to spoon it up and I have to confess, I like mine the same way.

Thegentlemonkey · 10/09/2015 19:23

My two both loved pancakes with lemon juice & mashed banana instead of sugar from the early days of weaning. Another favourite was lentil squares - cooked red lentils, cheese, egg, breadcrumbs, onion & herbs all baked in the oven & then cut into squares - great consistency for little hands to break off chunks themselves.

ISeeIt · 10/09/2015 19:27

My son's very first food was a just-cooked yolk from the middle of a boiled egg (6 minutes in boiling water) - a few tastes on a spoon and the rest smooshed in fist and straight in mouth - he still loves eggs now!

kierie · 10/09/2015 19:39

Eggy bread with cinnamon. Yum

Fugghetaboutit · 10/09/2015 20:05

I love French toast made with brioche, vanilla, cinnamon, cream, eggs and shed load of butter to fry it in - best weekend breakfast served with crispy bacon

MakeTeaNotWar · 10/09/2015 20:07

I love eggs and eat them almost every day. The kids annoyingly only like the white part so if I make fried or boiled egg, they leave me with the yolk. They're not keen on scrambled egg either which is annoying as so quick and easy to make
