British Lion Eggs have asked us to find out what Mumsnetters’ weaning recipes are.

Here’s what they say, “Dr Juliet Gray, registered nutritionist, says, ‘The current evidence suggests that mums looking to wean their babies can be encouraged to introduce eggs from six months as an early weaning food, as this could have a positive effect in terms of nutritional intake and may also help promote immune tolerance of eggs.’"

“In the past there has been doubt surrounding egg consumption by pregnant women and babies. It was recommended that these groups avoid eating eggs that were not fully cooked because of the small risk of salmonella. Since the British Lion scheme was introduced in 1998, however, these risks have been effectively eliminated from Lion-marked eggs.”

“The Food Standards Agency is currently reviewing the evidence relating to the safety of eggs in the UK with results expected in 2016. The British Egg Industry Council says that the safety record of British Lion eggs means that vulnerable groups should now be allowed to consume them when runny.”

So, what are your top egg weaning recipes? Have you ever weaned your children on eggs before? If so, how did you find it? Did you scramble, boil or make omelettes? Or maybe you make French toast for your LOs? Or perhaps pancakes have been a particular hit in your house? We’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences!

Everyone who posts their thoughts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 John Lewis voucher!

Thanks and good luck,

Another vote for eggy bread. Takes flavours really well too so vanilla, cinnamon, garam masala. Great way for dd to get different flavours.
I also very finely mash/chop some boiled egg into butter beans cooked and mashed with some passata, maybe a tiny bit of onion and a pinch of sweet paprika with a finger of toast. Dd is nearing 8 months so regular baked beans would be too salty, its easy to make my own 'baby' version and the egg helps it mash up to a really good texture.
An egg yolk also helps bind potato cakes. Mashed potato, flour, egg yolk. Shape into flat little patties and dry fry.

Kedgeree with a poached egg on top. Staple winter food in our house!

I thought weaning by DC on delicious scrambled eggs would be a brilliant idea. And that's how I found out he was profoundly allergic to eggs….

HitsAndMrs · 07/09/2015 20:12

My two DDS absolutely love eggs, I think it's because it was something they have had since being 6 months old.
We weaned them on scrambled eggs mostly, but they now love dippy eggs and chuckie eggs.
It's quite funny I've just found this thread as we're just watching Jamie Oliver's super food about Eggs and we have just said 'we love eggs!'

My DD loves eggy bread with brown sauce, egg and cress sandwiches and even egg in pizza!

thatstoast · 07/09/2015 20:22

DS loves eggs. He's 19m now but they've always been part of his diet since 6m. He likes them scrambled or as an omlette or quiche. I'm glad he likes them as I'm not a great cook so scrambled eggs is something quick and easy for me to do when I get home from work.

Another french toast/eggy bread fan here!

And American style pancakes/drop scones. My DS's very favourite when he was little. Recipe from the BLW cookbook - I forget the quantities, but it was no sugar or salt.

BeeMyBaby · 07/09/2015 21:15

I used scrambled egg when weaning DD1 but just did BLW with DD2 so she had quiche along with us- I love the idea of French toast though so may try if I have another DC

2 eggs, 1 banana, handful of rice flour and teaspoon of cinnamon whizzed in blender. Use to make small pancakes. Very quick and healthy. Popular with mummy, daddy and baby. Really easy for my LG to eat since 6 moths of age. Served with yogurt and crushed blueberries or pieces of strawberry. Maple syrup for the grown ups!

Theimpossiblegirl · 07/09/2015 22:02

You really can't beat a simple scrambled egg for weaning. Now they are older, my girls love omelettes, french toast, eggy bread and fritattas.

I love a runny poached egg myself, either on toast or with savoury muffins and bacon or salmon.

Whyisitsodifficult · 07/09/2015 22:14

Omelettes here. Great for shoving in extras like peas and lentils. Cut into strips for baby led weaning.

NicNak71 · 07/09/2015 22:34

I love eggs, so I did introduce them to both my daughters diets quite early. Scrambled egg was a great messy start for them, they loved puddling through it with their chubby little hands.

I also made plain egg omelet and cut it into finger strips for them.

As they got a little further along, I soft boiled eggs and peeled the shell off for them, so that they could have a dippy egg and soldiers without the risk of eating the shell. Hard boiled eggs quartered were great for finger food.

Their favourite though then and still is now is a poached egg with soldiers and soft vegetable fingers to dip in it.

My daughter loves eggy crumpets: like eggy bread, but with crumpets! A really easy first food: easy to hold and eat

del2929 · 07/09/2015 23:20

boiled eggs then doing egg mayo sandwiches- omlettes

Wisteria1979 · 08/09/2015 08:15

Eggs scrambled with cream cheese and chives here as weaning food and when a bit older pancake strips and omelette

onthematleavecountdown · 08/09/2015 08:19

Egg and banana pancakes. Mash a banana, mix in to a whisked egg and fry in coconut oil. Nutritious and delicious.

duckbilled · 08/09/2015 08:44

My daughter loves cheesy eggy bread. I make cheese sandwiches cut into fingers and then dip into egg and milk mixture. Fry gently and enjoy the cheesy gooey goodness.

CornishYarg · 08/09/2015 09:24

During weaning, DS loved courgette and sweetcorn fritters - egg and flour, add grated courgette and some sweetcorn and fry spoonfuls. He also loved hard boiled egg.

Currently, cheese and pepper omelette and Yorkshire pudding are favourites.

Pointlessfan · 08/09/2015 09:35

I did BLW and introduced eggs early on. DD loved frittata and it's still one of her favourite meals.
I fry chopped onion, cooked potato sliced and whatever vegetables we have, usually peppers and peas then add 3-4 beaten eggs and cook until set before topping with grated cheese and grilling. It's a very quick tea and cold slices are good for picnics.

sharond101 · 08/09/2015 09:57

boiled egg mashed in a cup with toast fingers just as my Mum made me.

purplepowers · 08/09/2015 10:41

I can recommend a great egg recipe that's a bit different - it's an Indian dish which is absolutely delicious (a curry with a difference!). Makes a wonderful cheap dinner.

Firstly, fry a chopped onion with a few cumin seeds in a frying pan with olive oil. When the onions are browned, add some tinned chopped tomatoes. Add some garlic, ginger, salt, pepper, red chilli powder, tumeric and garam masala. Simmer on a low heat with the lid on for about 10 mins. You may need to add a bit of water if the mixture is a bit dry.

Next, open the lid and crack about 5-6 eggs on the top so the yolks are whole. The top surface should be covered with the eggs. Put the lid back on and cook on a gentle heat for about 8 mins, or until eggs are cooked to your preference. The steam cooks the eggs to perfection and the flavour of the tomato and onion mixture absorbs into the eggs.

Sprinkle on some more garam masala and chopped coriander. Serve with nan bread, chappatis or rice. It is amazing!

purplepowers · 08/09/2015 10:44

Damn - just realised the recipe is supposed to be for weaning (stupid me!).

Hope you try it for yourselves anyway :)

CopperPan · 08/09/2015 10:46

A great simple one is mixing a hard boiled egg with cream cheese. Serve with toasted pitta bread sticks or veggie sticks for dipping.

Lulabellx1 · 08/09/2015 12:07

My DD was part of the EAT study ran by St Thomas's Hospital. She was allergy tested before we began, but then we weaned her on eggs (and peanuts, sesame, fish, cows milk and wheat) all from 3 months. She was fine and has a really good immunity now that she is four years old.

With eggs, I used to scramble them and make mini omelets. She likes egg mayo sarnies when she moved on to finger food.

We keep hens at home, so eggs are in abundance! :)

NerrSnerr · 08/09/2015 12:57

My baby had scrambled eggs from about 7 months and loved them. She is 12 months and loves boiled eggs and whisked eggs mixed with peas and sweetcorn and baked in the oven. She loves them as a finger food.

PleaseGetOffTheTableDarling · 08/09/2015 15:12

I've used eggs for baby led weaning from the get-go because you can get such a range of textures so easily - scrambled, hard boiled, omelette strips, eggy bread and frittata are all regulars in our house!
Interesting to read that soft yolks are now considered pretty safe, I waited until DD was a year old until giving her soft yolks but maybe I'll relax abut with DS (currently 8 months).
