Fingers crossed it will soon be BBQ season - and as part of their #LidlSurprises campaign, the team at Lidl would love to hear about your surprising BBQ successes.

Lidl say "With BBQ season hopefully upon us soon, we'd love to hear from Mumsnetters with fabulous ideas for how to make your BBQ a summer sensation! We're really excited to be working with Mumsnet to promote the range of BBQ items available in Lidl - everything from salads, to meats and dessert ideas - but we know you probably have a genius idea up your sleeve to make even the most basic foods into a BBQ treat. Surprise us!"

So what's surprisingly good on the BBQ? Could be a fairly everyday dish that's even better grilled in the open air, or something that you'd never have thought of barbecuing until you tried it - or just a particular combination of ingredients that seem to sing when cooked on the BBQ?

What reaction did you get from the hungry hordes? Why were you surprised it worked - and would you try it again? Tell us how long you cooked it for, and if it's a bit complicated please do share the recipe. Any photos are VERY welcome!

Add your surprisingly good BBQ food below - savoury or sweet - and you'll be entered into a prize draw where 5 MNers will win each £50 of Lidl vouchers.

Please note your comments may be included on Lidl's pages on MN, their social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks & good luck,
MNHQ

BBQ Chicken - 1/2 can of larger inside whole chicken & home made potatoe salad with new potatoes boiled and skinned. Fry chopped bacon in butter until crispy, chop foure gherkins, peel and core two apples and finely chop, 4 boiled eggs chopped and mix together with home made mayonnaise (two egg yolks slowly beat in oil) add squeeze of lemon juice and salt & pepper to taste. Then add fresh chopped parsley!

Pineapple grilled on the BBQ

It's a BBQ fruit salad for me - fresh pineapple, mango, peach and bananas done in their skins work well.

Just got to be vegetable kebabs marinated in Hoisin Sauce

Marinated chicken thighs - 4tbs soy sauce, 2tbs honey, 1tsp grated ginger, 1 clove crushed garlic. Marinade overnight, cook in the oven for 20 minutes and then finish off on the BBQ. The honey burns slightly and gives a great overall BBQ flavour.

Chocolate bananas: split down the middle, add some squares of chocolate, wrap in foil and slow cook on a BBQ for 30-45 mins. Simple and delicious!

My home made burgers were a massive hit made of quorn meat

JoJoBaldwin · 17/06/2015 17:39

Mushrooms, seasoned and roasted, are delicious on the BBQ!

blue cheese stuffed burgers

winnie21 · 17/06/2015 19:10

Thickly slice a baguette and spread garlic butter on both sides. Place on BBQ grill for 1-2 minutes each side. Really simple but delicious.
You can also do the same with blue cheese mixed with butter or margarine.

Fruit kebabs are great on the BBQ - Strawberry, banana and pineappe pieces threaded onto a pre-soaked skewer and grilled for a few minutes on each side

Salmon and lime wrapped in greaseproof paper

Wrap a pineapple in tin foil and bake it on the barbie, delicious.

Liquorice13 · 17/06/2015 19:38

Pizza, it has to be on a stone pizza base cooked in one of the covered BBQs. The taste is delicious as you get all the smoky flavours as well as the crispy crust.

vixxx666 · 17/06/2015 19:44

My homemade pulled pork - done in the slow cooker! I know it's not cooked on the bbq but I always serve it at bbqs as a side and it goes down well every time!

stefalfie11 · 17/06/2015 19:50

Sweet chili and lime king prawns on a skewer - delicious!

Marg2k8 · 17/06/2015 19:58

I like to toast marshmallows on a skewer held over the ashes, then sandwich them between two digestive biscuits to eat. Yummy.
