The team at Hobbycraft would like to hear about the Christmas arts and crafts activities you’ll be doing with your DCs this year.

Hobbycraft say, “We all remember our own special Christmas family traditions whether its making homemade decorations for the tree, helping bake the Christmas cakes, writing cards or simply the excitement of Father Christmas coming down the chimney! Here at Hobbycraft we’d love to hear about how your Christmas family traditions.”

So, what crafty Christmas projects will you be doing this year? Do you decorate the Christmas tree together? If you do, do you make your own decorations? Or perhaps you bake Christmas cakes and treats together?
Whatever you and your DCs will be making this Christmas, Hobbycraft would love to hear about it.

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where three lucky Mumsnetters can win £100 Hobbycraft gift cards
Please note your comments may be included on Hobbycraft's social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

I've been reading through these for some great ideas!

DD and I have made the Christmas cake so far- hopefully it tastes good...

We also plan to decorate some pine cones with glitter and snow and make some paperchains.

Baking is the main thing though and we are planning cupcakes, chocolate cornflake cakes and perhaps the Xmas pudding if we are feeling adventurous...

Emrob86 · 24/11/2014 14:04

We'll be building 3D models! I stocked up on a whole bunch of different kinds when I was in Hobbycraft a few weeks ago. I know my niece and nephew will love them. My own daughter is a bit too young but will love watching her cousins getting creative. :)

VanillaKip · 24/11/2014 14:09

I have bought the DC a Christmas activity book, and it has lots of things to colour in and cut out - Christmas decorations, cards, advent calendars etc. We have started it already and they are enjoying working through it.

Last year we tried to make a gingerbread house, but it was a bit too technically challenging, and I ended up doing it all (and it still collapsed). So this year we will stick to gingerbread biscuits cut out with festive (and not so festive) biscuit cutters.

AMouseLivedinaWindMill · 24/11/2014 17:56

Making ginger bread biscuits to eat and hang on tree with the stained glass effect, ie with melted sweets in them, small hole and put a ribbon in, tie in cellophane and they also make a lovely hand made gift.

Making our own advent calender tree, from old wall paper samples, cut out various shapes from cookie cutters, stars, reindeer, and trad Victorian V shaped cones, moon shape etc, get tree branches, spray white, sprinkle glitter on, wedge them in florists foam in a vase/ urn, ( spray urn white too) then attached sewn shapes and fill with own sweets, very colorful and fun and a lovely decoration in itself that can be used for Easter too.

going for walks to get pine cones to decorate and turn into pine garlands.

christmas markets - bath and santa train at longleat. also NT trust houses that have trad victorian crafts and making things out of paper.

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 24/11/2014 18:33

My DD and I will make christmas biscuits, felt wreaths and paper chains. I look forward to these moments!

Spirael · 24/11/2014 19:35

We've been making the Christmas cards already, we'll be decorating the tree this weekend and closer to the day there'll be lots of cooking and baking that we'll all do together as a family!

crickmel · 24/11/2014 20:56

Decorating the tree altogether and enjoying unwrapping all the decorations we have made or collected together. I have just made my first batch of mince pies with my DD and think we will be doing a lot more cooking together too (accompanied by loud pop music of course!).

Hopezibah · 24/11/2014 21:47

We love making salt dough decorations. This year I've discovered an even easier kind of dough using bicarb and water. We then decorate with sequins and glitter and hang on the tree.

The kids love to make their own christmas cards too.

Hopezibah · 24/11/2014 21:47

oh and paper chains - Christmas is definitely a time to make our own paper chains and snowflakes to decorate the house with!

Minnie911 · 24/11/2014 22:07

We will be baking mince pies with ds 2.6 and doing Christmassy pictures with lots of glitter and sparkly bits!
We are also going to decorate our living room as it's the first year we have had our own house and I plan on letting my toddler pick decorations as well as make things like paper chains and salt dough tree decorations - can't wait :-)

bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 24/11/2014 22:33

We were just in hobby craft last weekend stocking up Grin
We have already made wreaths- dds a mini heart wreath each wrapped in wool and covered in shiny glittery christmas things! We are making mini stockings to give out to family per Christmas with a little poem about spreading christmas cheer. And we plan to make a hamper of homemade christmas treats for the local police station on Christmas Eve to say thanks for keeping us safe. Also the obligatory homemade decs and Christmas cards- always the best SmileI also fancy having a go at our own snow gloves with pics of dds inside

theressomethingaboutmarie · 25/11/2014 11:48

DD (aged 7) and I have two craft projects planned. The first is a pom pom wreath. We're using red and white wool and will make pom poms of various sizes and really cram them on :-). The second is to make huge 'sweets' using pieces of pool noodle, some fab white and red striped wrapping paper and some cellophane to cover it all and keep it dry. It's going to make the outside of the house look amazing.

SnowyMouse · 25/11/2014 15:36

I'm decorating gingerbread with my nieces and nephews.

BlueEyeshadow · 25/11/2014 16:33

We usually find some simple finger-paint based design for Christmas cards.

I've seen a pipe cleaner Christmas tree and a snowman tea light thing that I like the look of, and I also want to make some embroidered and/or cross stitch decorations for myself this year. :)

Babyj2012 · 25/11/2014 20:22

So far we've made saltdough decorations, hand painted Rudolph Christmas cards and toilet roll snowmen!

Mummycherry2 · 26/11/2014 02:05

My DS is 6 months... We are making:

  • clay hand print Xmas decorations
  • ink handprints and footprints for photo frames
  • finger print Rudolph cards
  • sweet cakes
  • homemade fudge
stephgr · 26/11/2014 04:37

we make cards, paper chains, paper lanterns and Christmas decorations for the tree. This year my eldest said she would make some stockings with felt but she hasn't started yet.

MadMonkeys · 26/11/2014 10:27

Making paper snowflakes always goes down well. DD1 became obsessed with them last year!

Zazzabeans · 26/11/2014 11:23

I looove this time of year :) means I can spend time with dcs making lots of wonderful things :)

we make all xmas cards for dc teachers.
then we make jams, chutneys, biscuits, calendars, soaps, tree decorations for family members and neighbours. (couple of elderly neigbours with no family :( )

we make our own giftbags and dcs love personalising them for the recipient.

I have bought a couple of craft kids from hobbycraft (make your own photoframe and felt garland) which we plan to do this weekend.

dh will get the tree and decorations out of the loft on Saturday and I will sort through ready to put up with dcs on sunday, guaranteed there will be bickering over who gets to put the star on top Grin

keely79 · 26/11/2014 14:49

DD and I have already made the Christmas pudding - she helped measure out and both DD and DS gave it a stir!

Clove oranges for the tree
Gingerbread shapes for the tree
Christmas cards for relatives

starlight36 · 26/11/2014 18:54

We've made the Christmas cake together and DD and DH usually ice it and decorate it together nearer the big day. We will probably make some gingerbread biscuits in Christmas shakes - reindeer, stars and bells.
I've also bought a paper chain kit to make together.

AlwaysWashing · 26/11/2014 18:57

We make loo roll Santas, obligatory glittery snowflakes, footprint snowmen & reindeer Christmas cards and for the first time this year lanterns made with plastic bottles, cellophane, stickers and LOTS of glitter!

mamato3luvleys · 26/11/2014 21:53
