The team at Hobbycraft would like to hear about the Christmas arts and crafts activities you’ll be doing with your DCs this year.

Hobbycraft say, “We all remember our own special Christmas family traditions whether its making homemade decorations for the tree, helping bake the Christmas cakes, writing cards or simply the excitement of Father Christmas coming down the chimney! Here at Hobbycraft we’d love to hear about how your Christmas family traditions.”

So, what crafty Christmas projects will you be doing this year? Do you decorate the Christmas tree together? If you do, do you make your own decorations? Or perhaps you bake Christmas cakes and treats together?
Whatever you and your DCs will be making this Christmas, Hobbycraft would love to hear about it.

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where three lucky Mumsnetters can win £100 Hobbycraft gift cards
Please note your comments may be included on Hobbycraft's social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks and good luck,

Although I did all the boring cutting out squares preparation and she did the satisfying gluing and poking.

Wannabe2015 · 19/11/2014 20:11

Thanks serin. I love Christmas, but always find the spirit gets a bit lost in amongst the commercialism (typical middle class angst nonsense I know!) so I'm trying to steer DC in the direction of Christmas as a time for trying to be a better person and thinking of others.

So some promises are about sharing, not interrupting people etc. Some are easier and more practical, like making beds and helping tidy up toys before bath time.

It's more for my 5 year old than the 3 year old obviously. When I asked DD2 what Christmas was about she thought hard then replied with 'Cheese'.

Bead decorations for the Christmas tree

BlackeyedSusan · 19/11/2014 22:21

decorating the christmas wreath for the door with extra baubles.

decorating pots with far too much glitter glue for their teachers.

making paperchains.

Slowdownsally · 20/11/2014 06:36

We'll be making tree decorations this weekend and we also saw some knitted paper chains recently and now Ds wants me to make them!

We also make cards for Xmas and collect natural materials to make wreaths and table decs.

Ginfox · 20/11/2014 06:47

I'll be putting "activity" cards in dd's advent calendar. Including making cards for grandparents, making the cake, going to get the tree, decorating the tree (dd can do everything except lights, while I sit on my hands so as not to interfere), making xmas biscuits, decorating xmas cake. On non-activity days she's getting one piece of a baking set per day.

I'm really looking forward to it (far more excited than she is Xmas Grin

Every year we get a gingerbread house kit. Last year the only one left when I remembered to but it was a very expensive gingerbread train kit.
The girls did it all themselves and if looked like carnage. Like the polar express had crashed in to hansel and grettles cottage! They had fun though and it has become a tradition we do every christmas.

FluffyRedSocks · 20/11/2014 09:16

We make our own advent calenders, with father Christmas' face at the top and every day until Christmas we stick cotton wool balls on for his beard!! When his beard is full it's Christmas Eve :)

This year our elf is going to bring a mix of little treats, activities to do, and craft projects, so I hope we're going to be doing loads of making.

I've got pine cone elves, Rudolph pine cones, lolly stick ornaments, cinnamon ornaments, and lots of glitter(!) ready to go for various different days, and I can't wait.

The craft activities will arrive on the days we have free time after school, and at the weekends so will hopefully keep them busy and entertained!

SomeSortOfDeliciousBiscuit · 20/11/2014 13:40

I'll be making chocolate slabs to give as gifts. DS loves choosing the toppings and decorations to go on them. I like the Wilton moulds from Hobbycraft for making things like mini gingerbread men and candy canes out of chocolate to go on the top. We buy your cellophane to wrap them in. There's always plenty of chocolate left over for a cheeky nibble during the making process too. Wink

rachaelsit · 20/11/2014 14:12

wizzler · 20/11/2014 17:28

JennyKearney · 20/11/2014 17:49

We used to make cardboard crackers and lots of snowy pictures with cotton wool and glitter glue. Now they are older we cross stitch decorations!

nic013 · 20/11/2014 18:05

We're making a gingerbread house and some chocolate truffles

chickensandbees · 20/11/2014 18:56

Christmas tree decorations with cardboard and glitter.

Paper chains. I might give bunting a go this year as well.

Pine cones covered in glue then put them in a bag with glitter in until they are covered in glitter. DD loves this one and has been collecting pine cones in anticipation.

tippytappywriter · 20/11/2014 18:57

We will be making sparkly cards to give to family.

ChaffinchOfMegalolz · 20/11/2014 20:39

gingerbread tree decorations so need ribbon;
those fold up and snip snowflakes and carol singers Grin
have never tried making cards.....intruiging

FrumpyPumpy · 20/11/2014 22:02

Going to make cards, a star for the tree (kids not impressed with 35year old Sindy I like to use) and some biscuits to hang in kitchen on the garland.

Love Christmas!!

AlexanderinaTheGreater · 20/11/2014 22:36

DD is very excited about having a Christmas tree in the house, and is adamant it's going to have Gruffalos on it (like the Christmas tree in Stick Man!). So I guess we're going to be making Gruffalo decorations....

ineedausername · 20/11/2014 22:42

we are currently making a handprint wreath, and starting on decorating baubles soon :)

Nodney · 20/11/2014 22:47

I have three sons, 7, 3 and 1 and we have big plans for crafting this Christmas! We always make a gingerbread house - but this year we are attempting a train! We will be making paper chains and Christmas menus too. This year my DS3 and I are embarking on our greatest baking challenge yet - a Christmas cake that looks like a Christmas cottage! I've bought the ingredients and can't wait to get going with it!

HangingInAGruffaloStance · 20/11/2014 23:10

Dd is three, so just getting the idea f Christmas. This thread is great for ideas. We willbe making paper chains and snowflakes, and decorating wrapping paper. I am going to try felting but she is maybe a little young for that. We often do decoupage, which she loves, and is a good one for being forgiving of mistakes. So might try making some baubles or so,etching with wrapping paper scraps.

SunshineOutdoors · 21/11/2014 08:58

Pine cones dipped in white paint and glitter.

Tree decorations from oven bake clay - I get sparkly gold and silver and mix with red, roll out and cut shapes like making biscuits, bake in oven then hang with ribbon.

Christmas cards using blank card sets

Baking tree shaped spiced biscuits

Lots of pva glue and glitter stuck on card shapes

Putting Christmas music on and crafting at the big kitchen table with fairy lights twinkling to get us in the mood.

SunshineOutdoors · 21/11/2014 09:00

Dcs are 3 and 1 this Christmas, so it will be messy but fun. Lots of silver and gold glitter thrown round the kitchen is only going to add to the Christmassy atmosphere, isn't it?
