Tesco have asked us to find out what the most amusing things Mumsnetters' DCs have said about their food.

Here’s what Tesco say, “Studies show that almost a third of primary school pupils believe that cheese comes from plants. Our Farm to Fork initiative is trying to help children to understand where their food comes from. Farm to Fork Trail Guides are dispelling all sorts of food myths for the children visiting our stores, but we’d love to hear what your DCs say at home”

So, what crackers have your kids come up with around the table? Perhaps they have their own creative theories on where their food comes from? Or do they have some particularly interesting names for their food?

Whatever it is, we’d love to hear it!

Everyone who adds their thoughts to the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £200 Tesco voucher.

Please note that any comments posted on this thread may be used by Tesco in further marketing material (anonymously, of course).

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

My son once asked if Gravy came from Graveyards eerrgghh what a horrible thought

We have an allotment and my nephew who is 7 was amazed that potatoes are dug up from the ground. He thought they grew on trees like apples. A couple of years ago, my DS7 didn't know that animals died to provide us with meat. He won't eat pork anymore as a result.

My DS told me last year that his nursery key worker was silly because she said pumpkin was a fruit, and you can't have pumpkin at fruit time...

Other than that, he's pretty clued up on where things come from, I do think if you are going to serve meat they need to know it's dead animals, a surprisingly high number of my friends don't agree and rather hide the fact.

my youngest is too young to even think about it yet

My DDs are 2 and 4 and just getting to know the foods they like. my funniest conversation lately was trying to explain the difference between Quorn and Corn (on-the-cob) to my 4yr old. I don't know where I'd start trying to explain where Quorn comes from!! Maybe when they're both older!

DD2, then aged about 8, asked whilst eating a burger 'where does a burger come from?' DH replied 'it comes from a cow', and I clarified 'No, it doesn't come from a cow, it IS a cow'. DD said 'I don't think I want to eat cows anymore' She's been vegetarian ever since (2 years +).

my daughter phoebe had been learning about the environment at school and how we have to save trees. A few days later we went shopping to the supermarket and she was having a massive rant at the person putting the broccoli out on the veg aisle because it wasnt doing the environment any good cutting down baby trees to eat!

My son who ia 11 saw "dolphin friendly" on a tin of tuna, he said very shocked " I didnt know that tuna was dolphon, :(, at least they catch them in a friendly way".

risey1983 · 27/10/2014 09:07

chicken comes from chickens, turkey comes from turkeys, lamb comes from lambs (so far so good) and beef comes from beefs and pork comes from porks ....!!! Erm not quite!

tranmereforever · 27/10/2014 09:09

DD1 says whenever there is cheese " oh from daddys smelly feet" as she has heard people saying feet smells of cheese!!

glennamy · 27/10/2014 09:17

My daughter once asked a farm employee on a day out 'Are your rats used for school milk like on the Simpson's?' when she saw some pet rats in a display...

cazzzie987 · 27/10/2014 09:21

My child didn't want to eat fish fingers as he reckoned that fish needed them as their fingers.

TracyKNixon · 27/10/2014 09:28

My daughter asked why black people have black bones when we were in the 'quiet' waiting room at our doctor's surgery! We were sitting beside a black lady!

createbeauty · 27/10/2014 09:30

My son has no concept of where food comes from. I try to tell him but DH tells me not to put him off? I think it's better if he knows that bacon is a pig instead of being freaked out by it later.

lucyrobinson · 27/10/2014 10:04

My children seem to associate my food with horrible things. Tomato sauce looks like blood. Beef stew looks like poo and some of my soup looks like sick.

sweetsomethings · 27/10/2014 10:54

My son thinks that he eats food chicken and that is different to real chicken .

gabbyevs · 27/10/2014 11:02

apparently it comes from the sky lol

mawbroon · 27/10/2014 11:31

My kids know where their food comes from, but ds2 is obsessed with the Tesco delivery vans.

We have to go out to the street and check if it was the "strawberry van" because that's his favourite one.

lorna1104 · 27/10/2014 11:40

when i said to my daughter eggs come from chickens she said do u have to open there tummy? and had to explain they push them out she was very confused and said i thought that only for pooing ha ha x

beckyinman · 27/10/2014 11:51

Fish fingers tend to baffle them

Ritakd · 27/10/2014 12:30

My oldest DD was convinced the milkman brought milk to top up my breast milk for her younger siblings

Ethan260908 · 27/10/2014 12:40

I have known about the decline in kids knowledge about food and their sources and so have tried to rectify this throughout my son's upbringing....alas..my DS aged 4 at the time, wouldn't touch a pork sausage as he thought he was eating a pig's willy (he knew pork came from pigs), put a fair few other customers off buying sausages for a while I bet who overheard our conversation!!

tubbss · 27/10/2014 13:40

I got into trouble with this! I told my son that wasps make mustard the same way bees make hone, thats why its hot because of the sting. He then told his teaccher.... lol

JoJoBaldwin · 27/10/2014 13:42

Another one here who's DD thinks fish actually have fingers. At the age of 6 she is quite keen not to eat meat, due to understanding where it comes from. When she is offered ham when we are out for tea she always says "No thanks, I don't like pig".
