Tesco have asked us to find out what the most amusing things Mumsnetters' DCs have said about their food.

Here’s what Tesco say, “Studies show that almost a third of primary school pupils believe that cheese comes from plants. Our Farm to Fork initiative is trying to help children to understand where their food comes from. Farm to Fork Trail Guides are dispelling all sorts of food myths for the children visiting our stores, but we’d love to hear what your DCs say at home”

So, what crackers have your kids come up with around the table? Perhaps they have their own creative theories on where their food comes from? Or do they have some particularly interesting names for their food?

Whatever it is, we’d love to hear it!

Everyone who adds their thoughts to the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £200 Tesco voucher.

Please note that any comments posted on this thread may be used by Tesco in further marketing material (anonymously, of course).

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

My seven year old recently informed me that bacon came from camels :D

When my son was younger we asked him where does milk come from and he looked at us like we were stupid and said "from the fridge of course!"

tiddles12 · 27/10/2014 15:09

my kids used to think that all meat came from cows, will not eat broccoli because it is trees and cauliflower is bushes!

lhlee62 · 27/10/2014 16:20

My daughter says it all comes from the shop, she doesn't get the concept yet that food comes from animals. I tried to explain eggs come from chickens and she said no they come in the shopping from the shop!!

PinkAndBlueBedtimeScares · 27/10/2014 16:43

My dd doesn't seen bothered by what the meat is called we are having for dinner, only the animal it comes from.
Shopping earlier an old lady looked mortified at the conversation which went
'Whats for dinner?'
'Pig'
!

My son at school in Wales said he was bringing home a 'drip' for our tea.
It turned out to be a 'leek' for St David's Day he has never lived it down. We still buy 'drips' in Tescos!

Our DD2 asked where Lasagne came from and i explained it came from Italy..she quickly replied with: "Do they have Icelands there as well"..cue fits of laughter!

twinklenic · 27/10/2014 19:35

im ashamed to say that my 14 year old daughter still thinks pork comes from a cow!!!
My son used to ask for a cakey when he wanted a butty , i have no idea where he got that from and all my kids call water corporation pop ! ...that ones from my parents :)

donnatowner · 27/10/2014 19:55

I don't think age improves the naivety of children. sometimes i have to regularly remind my son, food, doesn't just appear out of no where like he thinks, and i have to either make it, buy it or prepare it.

EddieReznor · 27/10/2014 20:02

DS (3) asked me which animal garlic bread came from.

Annbunce · 27/10/2014 20:12

My youngest used to think that if you had ham or sausages from pigs, for example, that the part of them used for it just grew back and that they didn't have to be slaughtered. If only...

DD gets very confused about what is/isn't suitable for veggies (ie me) - in the last week she has asked me if I wanted to share her pork pie & fish fingers!

alsproject · 27/10/2014 20:44

They think that everything grows on trees

Cailin7 · 27/10/2014 21:43

potifery cakes (a.k.a. profiteroles)

pennwood · 27/10/2014 21:53

At kindergarten the staff were explaining where food comes from & asked where beef came from, Amelia said steak, but she is only three.

Kem99 · 27/10/2014 22:38

My DS when younger would never eat mushrooms when she overheard her older cousin declare that she hated them, so I renamed them 'fungies' and she ate them just fine.

pumpkinsweetie · 27/10/2014 22:46

My 8yo a few years back, mentioned to me upon putting eggs in the fridge that pigs laid eggs for easter and promptly started cracking a raw egg on to a piece of bread thinking you could eat them raw boak

Gilla01 · 27/10/2014 23:17

Son's a proper carnivore - a meal's not complete without meat - but he considers that cheese is a form of meat!

kerryv · 27/10/2014 23:48

My son asked if chicken wings come from chickens, and frogs legs come from frogs where do meatballs come from?

happysouls · 28/10/2014 10:25

I have been trying to think of anything, but despite trying to engage my son in all sorts of food related activity he never showed the slightest interest! We shopped and cooked together and he was told what things were made of and where they came from! He saw things growing in a greenhouse and on farms. But no, absolutely nothing! The only thing I can think of is how he used to say 'gik' before he could say 'drink' to ask for his bottle!

aless02 · 28/10/2014 14:30

my son says that milk comes from cows - which is true, but I also try and teach him the important of how we are mammals and nourish our babies with our own milk.

Methenyouplus4 · 28/10/2014 14:50

This classic wasn't my children but my young cousin when looking at some pigs on a farm. You have to imagine it was said in a very wise, knowing tone: "Look at all the piggies, they oink and lay the bacon." Mmmmm yes, they 'lay' the bacon.x

VictoriaSt · 28/10/2014 14:58

been on enough farm outings to be pretty up on what comes from where - no thinking honey comes from honey bears around here!
