Tesco have asked us to find out what the most amusing things Mumsnetters' DCs have said about their food.

Here’s what Tesco say, “Studies show that almost a third of primary school pupils believe that cheese comes from plants. Our Farm to Fork initiative is trying to help children to understand where their food comes from. Farm to Fork Trail Guides are dispelling all sorts of food myths for the children visiting our stores, but we’d love to hear what your DCs say at home”

So, what crackers have your kids come up with around the table? Perhaps they have their own creative theories on where their food comes from? Or do they have some particularly interesting names for their food?

Whatever it is, we’d love to hear it!

Everyone who adds their thoughts to the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £200 Tesco voucher.

Please note that any comments posted on this thread may be used by Tesco in further marketing material (anonymously, of course).

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

Asked my 18month old where milk comes from and her reply was "the kitchen" got it on video, hilarious

Keepcalmanddrinkwine · 21/10/2014 20:22

I heard DD talking to her friend about food. She asked her "Do you like duck? it's a kind of chicken." This is the same child who would call anything in breadcrumbs "Fishing nuggets."

DS1 is pretty clued up about the food chain - he's 5. But his favourite shopping activity is pointing to the pork, and stating "That's pig meat, Mummy", ditto for beef/cow, lamb/sheep etc.

Genesgirl · 21/10/2014 21:05

Me trying to teach the DC where food comes from and at the same time rekindle my love of growing things. Me: 'Lets plant these garlic seeds'. DS2 age 4, 'OOOh yes mummy, I love garlic bread - will we be able to dig up garlic bread then?'.....who am I to burst his bubble...picturing a pizza plant growing beside it.....

PenguinSalute · 21/10/2014 21:09

DS is only 2 and at the moment is far more interested in eating food than where it comes from- mealtimes are jollied up by him singing 'it's going down down to my tummy, down down to my poo!'

He does however love fruit and veg picking, and likes to spot fruit growing when we're out and about. Meat is a trickier one- he's convinced everything comes from 'the burger shop'...

My 7 year old says "mummy, why don't you go in the little Tesco anymore", to which I reply " because they have replaced all checkout people with those machines and they are money grabbing b***so who only care about their shareholders, and don't give a toss about their staff or customers,
Ooh, do I win?!

Pandora452 · 21/10/2014 21:21

"He also reckons every fruit and vegetable is "Not for him" sadly!"

LOVE that :D

My DCs were funny about eating meat that looked like meat for a while. They'd eat burger, shepherds pie and such but weren't keen on roast beef/gammon/chicken as they didn't like how it looked, so we had avoided explaining where it came from incase it put them off even more. Now they're much better and will eat anything an have started asking where it comes from.

I took them shopping last weekend and my 5 and 6 year olds were reading the labels on the lamb section, lamb leg, neck of lamb etc. The rest of the way round the shop I had them asking "what part of the lamb does pork come from?" I told them it comes from a pig not a lamb. To which dd replied "I like pig mummy."Grin

They love helping my dad plant vegetables and watering them and bringing some home. Ds takes the seeds out of all his apples and saves them to plant and grow apple trees.

my little boy thinks hot dogs are actually cooked dogs!

MadMonkeys · 22/10/2014 14:12

Not sure if this counts but we currently have to relate all of DD1's food to Octonauts... so cabbage is kelp, cucumber is sea cucumber, yoghurt is kelp vanilla pudding...

AndHarry · 22/10/2014 18:53

4yo DS thinks that meat is a type of animal. This came up in a discussion about piranhas Hmm

JLucky · 22/10/2014 22:08

When my DS was younger, his school had some problems with the power supply in the kitchen an were unable to serve hot food one day. He explained to me that the children had been given sandwiches for lunch "because the school dinner machine had broken down".

NoodieRoodie · 22/10/2014 22:12

Not one of my DCs but a neighbour years ago. He was a bout 8 and came home from school to impart the very interesting fact that "in the olden days milk used to come from cows". My mum had to break it to him that nothing had changed! He's 21 now and still a laughing point in the family!

Fizzyplonk · 22/10/2014 22:38

We had Roast Lamb last week, poor DS (4) said 'no it's not its meat',
He was also surprised that tinned sweetcorn was a vegetable (regularly has corn on the cob). Not sure if he thought was a grain (loves farming) or a fruit as it's so sweet.

ScrambledEggAndToast · 22/10/2014 23:00

My son didn't realise that bacon came from pigs when he was younger. He thought that there was another animal that supplied bacon. He also thought that toad in the hole had toads in it Grin

IneedAwittierNickname · 22/10/2014 23:04

Ds2 used to think that pigs laid sausages in much the same way as chickens lay eggs. When I explained the truth to him be decided to be a vegetarian. Although he still ate burgers as apparently that's ok.
He was fully veggie for about 2 months and now 3 years later often chooses the veggie option.

Excitedforxmas · 22/10/2014 23:10

My dd was disgusted when she found out milk came out of a cow. Ewwww I,ll never drink milk from a cow she said - I only like the stuff from tesco!

Excitedforxmas · 22/10/2014 23:12

Also when she refused to eat certain foods we used to tell her it was chicken which she loved. Even now she calls fish - chickenfish!!

bbrisotto · 23/10/2014 10:12

My 3 year old daughter doesn't eat meat, she calls all meat squashed chicken, squashed pig, squashed cow etc.

SummerLightning · 23/10/2014 10:16

Sorry Tesco, but my kids say that food comes from Mr Ocado.

spamanderson · 23/10/2014 13:56

I was having a lovely conversation with my adorable 5 year old, we were discussing where good comes from. 'Milk comes from cows' then her eyes shine bright as she confidently informs me that 'and spaghetti comes from Camemels (camels)' 'they make it in their humps and go nom nom nom when they're hungry'. I just don't have the heart to correct her!

mrsbabookaloo · 23/10/2014 22:10

DD2 was about 3 and was learning that meat comes from animals. At breakfast one day she asked " Mummy, what animal do you have to kill to make Cheerios?"

misshoohaa · 24/10/2014 14:15

My little one thought crackers came from planes, after overhearing a discussion involving 'plain crackers'. Grin

BigfootFilesHisToesInYourTea · 24/10/2014 14:29

There are some chickens we pass on the way to school. DD's face was a picture when she asked the question one day, "Mummy... those chickens we say hello to, they aren't the same as chickens that we eat, are they?" Yes, dearest. That's exactly it.

CrumpleHornedSnorkack · 24/10/2014 19:23

DD was most disturbed by a pack of duck's legs. Her concern was that the duck wouldn't be able to swim without it's legs and it'd just float there like in the bath.
