The team at Hobbycraft would like to hear about the Halloween arts and crafts activities you’ll be doing with your DCs this year.

Hobbycraft say “As parents ourselves we know what a challenge it can be to keep the kids entertained during the holidays and on a budget. So, for the sake of parents everywhere who are in need of inspiration, we’d love to know you’ll be making with the kids for Halloween”.

So, what crafty spooky Halloween projects will you be doing this year? Do your DCs dress up? And if they do, do you make their costumes? Maybe you paint their faces? Perhaps you bake Halloween treats together?
Whatever you and your DCs will be making this Halloween, Hobbycraft would love to hear about it.

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw, where three Mumsnetters will each receive a £100 Hobbycraft voucher.
Please note your comments may be included on Hobbycraft's social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

I love a bit of halloween fun. We have a farm near us that really go to town with halloween, lots of fun for the children and more importantly, lots of outdoor fun!! We choose our pumpkins and when we get home after our day of fun, we carve them up into funny faces and put candles in them. We make halloween cookies too.
My boys love dressing up so a mixture of shop bought and home made outfits with some of Mummies black eye liner always works a treat :)

We always carve a few pumpkins and we have a Halloween box of decorations to dress up the house. We usually buy costumes, but go to town on face painting.

We also will have various Halloween food and do bobbing for apples and a few games.

we have organised a ghost hunt round the windows in the village for all the local kids - its not too scary but still fun and a local story teller has organised a story telling festival called ghosts in the glens in co antrim which has a wealth of fairy and ghost fokelore and lots of creativity thrown in. The kids get to dress up and go on a story walk.
Along side of this we at home are cutting out hands and arms from black paper so that when the lights come on it looks like people are trying to get out!

Treats! Apple teeth (marshmallows and apple slics) ghost bananas and pumpkin gingerbread!

Meringue ghosts here, which along with spider cupcakes (licquorice legs) and cut out Halloween cookies and spooky jelly (green jelly with jelly worms in) will make part of our Halloween picnic! We hang bunting and decorate the table with plastic bugs.
Children will all dress up as witches or pumpkins, will carve pumpkins with DH and we are having friends over for a Halloween craft morning. Have actually bought the glittery sticker Halloween platter, pompom bats and black card from Hobbycraft in readiness! We will also make paperchains and I will cut out big pumpkin shapes and lots of circles, triangles etc for the children to glue on their own pumpkin faces. Can't wait!

We will be doing the usual pumkin carving. We will also be baking some disgusting looking cakes, the uglier the better, the girls love it.

Pumpkin carving! Also I will be making my kids up as zombies (BRAINS) and knitting DS2 a brain hat for DS1 to attack evil mother emoticon Grin I might be persuaded into doing a bit of bunting too....

I will also be making the splendid witch finger biscuits on the MN page....

We usually cobble together costumes at the last minute, so a mix of homemade and whatever we can use from the dressing up box. The dc always have their faces painted, we have those snazaroo paints.

I do like a bit of pumpkin carving Grin. I download some templates as my freehand artwork would be unidentifiable!

We will be trick or treating but only to houses that are displaying decorations so to show our involvement we will also have a few decorations up. We always carve a pumpkin - only a little one so that it fits on our window sill. We will make some kind of banner or streamer decoration to hang near the door and will have a few props laying around like a cauldren for the sweets. A lot of our neighbourhood goes into this big time with spooky door chimes and frightful accessories that the kids just love. We are on a tight budget but it is great that some people take the time and effort to make the evening fun for the little kids.

Last year my toddler and I made Halloween cakes and did some themed arts and crafts. There was also a Halloween treasure hunt which is quite disgusting. Have several bags which the toddler has to put their hand in and guess what's inside.
#1 Brains (actually jelly)
#2 Eyeballs (peeled, boiled eggs)
#3 Entrails (cooked spaghetti)

My eldest son (4) doesn't like scary things, nor do I if I'm honest, so we will be having a pumpkin themed family halloween party with apple bobbing and doughnuts on string etc (and pumpkins obviously).

I LOVE Halloween!

We will be dressing up, carving pumpkins, making spooky food and decorations, and playing games.

We don't go knocking at peoples doors, so stay indoors and have lots of fun.

My favourite is drawing around the DC on a massive roll of paper, and then using the shape to make a DC sized witch/vampire. We then all paint them, and hang around the house.

The children will dress up - this year DS (2) will be a skeleton and DD (1 month) a pumpkin!

We'll probably carve a pumpkin.

We'll bake some spooky fairy cakes.

We'll put together a bowl of sweet treats for the trick or treaters.

I won't be doing anything really this year with DD, purely because she will be a bit young to understand, but next year I would like to do pumpkin carving as I have never done it before. I will also make her a costume, as it will be cheaper than buying one (fabric stash!).

We will ensure we have treats in for trick or treaters this year, as every year. As we didn't have any visitors last year, DH will be hoping the same happens again so he can scoff the lot!

Dd is not quite 4, so too young to understand properly yet. DM bought her a fantastic witches dress from Sainsbury's which she loves and has worn constantly since, so I expect she'll be wearing that, and dp is itching to carve a pumpkin!

We're going to make lots of food for a halloween tea. I got lots of ideas from the Mumsnet Local Portsmouth Pinterest Halloween board. Loved the idea to cut eyehole from loo roll inserts and put a glow stick inside so it looks like glowing eyes in the garden.

Well, we will definitely be doing pumpkins! Last year, the DDs (whose bedrooms face the rront of the house) made "stained glass window" pumpkins out of black paper and tissue, which looked effective. And DD2 has a Halloween disco to go to, so we will be doing something creative with her costume. Lots of facepaint.

We always carve a pumpkin or two. Will be making spider web buns, caterpillars out of mini rolls and smarties with liquorice legs. We also make ghostly figures using loo roll holders, large white tissues glued over and a ghoulish face...then play skittles using a small pumpkin as the 'bowling ball'...it never rolls straight so is hilarious! We dress up, do face painting, trim the house, do bobbing apple....love it :)

We will carve pumpkins and ds3(8) will go out guising with his friends and share his loot with his older brothers (one of them will go with him to keep an eye on him). We will make Halloween cakes and probably Halloween pizzas for tea. The school have a Halloween disco too.
