The team at Hobbycraft would like to hear about the Halloween arts and crafts activities you’ll be doing with your DCs this year.

Hobbycraft say “As parents ourselves we know what a challenge it can be to keep the kids entertained during the holidays and on a budget. So, for the sake of parents everywhere who are in need of inspiration, we’d love to know you’ll be making with the kids for Halloween”.

So, what crafty spooky Halloween projects will you be doing this year? Do your DCs dress up? And if they do, do you make their costumes? Maybe you paint their faces? Perhaps you bake Halloween treats together?
Whatever you and your DCs will be making this Halloween, Hobbycraft would love to hear about it.

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw, where three Mumsnetters will each receive a £100 Hobbycraft voucher.
Please note your comments may be included on Hobbycraft's social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

I will be making Halloween tin can lanterns this year. It is a great activity plus it makes use of all the tins I recycle.

Portabella24 · 19/10/2014 14:36

We are carving pumpkins that the kids have helped grow themselves on our allotment. Also making spooky biscuits.

compy99 · 19/10/2014 15:42

still very small this year, so will be drawing a sign to put on the front door to put with the pumpkin of sweets that we leave outside ready for the trick or treaters. Will attempt to draw and cut out and paint some bats to dangle on strings.

After visiting hobbycraft recently, the little'n and I found lots of inspiration!
We got lots of cardboard shapes; a book, a teddy bear etc and we're making them in to scary pieces with lots of tissue paper, messy glue, glitter, stickers + lots more!
We found these skull things which you can paint so we're making one each, and he's already named his! HENRY! :)
Lots of messy fun with all the inspiration we found at Hobbycraft :) x

We avoid halloween as we personally don't find it something to be celebrated and it is something our children have never enjoyed and find scary. BUT that doesn't mean they can't have lots of fun this time of year. We still do loads of Autumn themed crafts, and they go to a light party instead of a halloween party where they also make lots of crafts, have sweets and party games etc there.

Using jars to make lanterns (you can use those little battery operated lights or glow stick in them as a safer option than candles).

We love making autumn leaf wreaths using coloured paper to cut out autumn leaf shapes.

Leaf rubbings and paintings.

Conker rolling painting (like marble painting but with conkers).

So still lots to be involved in without having to do any scary crafts.

My DD1 loves to help with the pumpkins - scooping out the bits is her fave bit! She chooses the theme and last year we did a Sofia carving and Minnie Mouse. She thought that was great!

Pumpkins and fancy dress outfits

JoJoY · 19/10/2014 17:25

We will be carving pumpkins!

freefan · 19/10/2014 17:51

We get out collecting pine cones and get decorating them to look like ghosts to string through the house, along with some paper lanterns, fantastic activity for those rainy days. Not forgetting the good old pumpkin and a lovely day spent making little pumpkin pies to take to friends :)

Foxyloxymumma · 19/10/2014 18:18

My boys are REALLY into zombie.
We will be making from paper zombie feet and hands (green with black nails -ekk) and sellotaping them to our hands and feet.
I think we might even making zombie masks too!

We will also be making halloween jelly in gruesome green and orange and putting sweet spiders in it...

Fumnudge · 19/10/2014 19:32

My girls are too young to carve pumpkins (it's a bit hard work for me too, all that scooping) so I buy orange balloons and we draw pumpkin faces on them with marker pens, with the knot at the top. We put them in terracotta plant pots so it looks like they're growing.
It works really well and it means everyone can join in.

jandoc · 19/10/2014 19:53

we don't really do much halloween stuff

pazanne · 19/10/2014 19:54

This cost less then £4 to make and he will last lots longer then a carved one

Well, this Saturday we'll decorate the front room and front of the house - probably more decs that we do for christmas.
It's also half term week over halloween so we have lots of things planned like paper plate spooky faces, painted with out spooky paints and halloween rollers (all bought in sales after Halloween last year), pin the spook mouth on the ghost, lots of movie time, ghost hunting in the park (looking for numbered ghosts that I will stick up before OH brings them to that park), and then on actual Halloween, we're christmas shopping in the morning! then the afternoon will be spent making spooky burgers for dinner and then off trick or treating when it gets dark!

pfcpompeysarah · 19/10/2014 20:59

I am not a one for Halloween traditions but today in the shops my son saw some orange frosting for cake topping, he wants to make pumpkin cakes with black icing... erm.. we might give it a go, not sure about the black icing though....

barker99 · 19/10/2014 21:02

Probably some drawings of pumpkins as my daughter loves watching me draw but is still very young for all the Halloween craziness

angiem32 · 19/10/2014 21:16

We'll be buying a pumpkin and instead of carving them (they're a little young to be joining in with that yet) we'll be painting them with spooky designs! We'll also be making some fun foam bat masks and doing face painting!

kerryv · 19/10/2014 21:24

Carve some pumpkins and cook some scary food.

lorka · 19/10/2014 21:53

We bought the Hobbycraft paper mache pumpkin and my daughter used the orange Halloween decopatch paper to decorate it. It looks fab!! :)

Liquorice13 · 19/10/2014 21:55

Painting Sycamore leaves white, drawing black eyes and mouth to make ghost and hanging them up and drilling holes in old tin cans to make faces, painting them orange and inserting tea tree lights, purple and green monster bunting with monster faces

shroney · 19/10/2014 22:18

We carve pumpkins and make soup and they love to make spooky cookies.

lhlee62 · 19/10/2014 23:54

We'll be carving pumpkins and making pumpkin pie. I might try some ghoulish treats like marshmallows with chocolate to looks like ghosts and jam tarts to look like pools of blood, I'm sure there are loads of cool ideas on the internet

teddygirlonce · 20/10/2014 07:41

This isn't just Halloween it's a nostalgiafest to the things we used to do as children with our mummies!

Wool pompoms (where you wind the wool around a cardboard 'donut' template) in different colours - white (ghosts), black (cat), orange (pumpkin) or red (devil/demon) - then decorate with stick-on eyes and extras just such as you'd find in Hobbycraft!

PonyMcBony · 20/10/2014 07:47

My son made a light this week using a milk bottle and fun foam from Hobbycraft.

Last year's witch outfit still fits (at a stretch) so that will do for trick or treat. DH will carve a pumpkin with DD (6) to put outside showing that children can knock.
We're having a little Halloween party here for 5 friends where we'll do games and have themed food. As it's during half term, DD will love decorating the house and making the bits for tea.
