Santander have asked us to find out from Mumsnetters what you spent your precious pocket money on back when they were a kid. They'd also like to know how much you used to get versus how much you give your DC now.

Cast your minds back to the time when a packet of crisps was 5p/ 10p/ 20p/ cheaper than they are now and you could buy all manner of teeth-rotting sweets with a fraction of what your children are getting each week.

So indulge us - let us know what you used to love to spend your pocket money on. And tell us how much you got when you were a child, and how much you're now giving your children. Where did you prefer to spend the money? Or were you a saver?

Everyone who adds their thoughts to the thread will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £250 shopping voucher*.

Please note that any comments posted on this thread may be used by Santander in further marketing material (anonymously, of course).

Thanks and good luck!

I got 20p a week, when I was perhaps 7 or 8, and increased every year or so, depending on parental finances, to perhaps a pound a week somewhere in my teens. When I was younger I used to save up pocket money and birthday/Christmas money to buy things for my model farm - a tractor was about £5. My parents also paid for the dandy for me and beano for my brother, which had sweets like sherbert dips on the front some weeks :-)

I never really asked for money so I didn't get set pocket money when I was a kid (90's), if I wanted a 10p mixture from the ice cream can then it was generally fine.

When I was older (8-10)I'd get a fiver a weekend, enough for a comic and some treats.

Early teens maybe £20... Not weekly, just when i asked, but I'm sure £20 a week would have happened if I'd have been more organised with my begging bowl Wink

Dd is 4, she gets 20p a day for helping with chores and doing her homework. This mostly goes on kinder eggs. Which makes me sad as the toys in kinder eggs are a bit rubbish now Sad

I think I'll increase the rate over winter so that she can save for something crafty to keep her occupied on the cold nights that she's stuck inside.

I didn't get regular pocket money when I was small but sometimes I was given sixpence as a treat and would buy a comic and some chocolate. We didn't give our DC pocket money regularly either but bought them a comic of their choice each every week, sweets were a rarer treat due to my daughter's abdominal migraine which was often related to blood sugar so we tried to keep her blood sugar as even as possible to avoid the attacks.

Blondieminx · 24/09/2014 20:02

Ooooh I used to get a quarter of cough candy and Jackie magazine. All for less than 50p!

I went to the old fashioned sweet shop in our town yesterday and spent £8 on retro sweets Shock

Maiyakat · 24/09/2014 20:08

I used to get 20p a week for sweets, and spent many hours pondering what to get at the local sweet shop (sadly no more). Rainbow crystals were the best!

PiperIsOrange · 24/09/2014 20:19

Always remember my dad giving me a big 50 ( 50p) then using it to buy a feast lolly.

Not very often as money was tight.

A comic magazine called 'Big' or similar which was huge and required lots of sweets and crisps to consume whilst reading it.

Onion rings and 'something' toms corn puff crisps - iirc they were 10p a bag - but were huge (1980's).

Also 10p mix ups (cola bottles, jazzles, funny little marshmallow mushroom thingies and giant strawberry jelly sweets. I remember my Mam not wanting us to use that particular corner shop as the shop owner had really dirty hands - which didn't bother me at the time but the thought now of him man handling my sweets makes me heave a little! Although I'm still here so it obviously didn't kill me! Grin

DoctorGilbertson · 24/09/2014 20:33

I remember getting 70p-1 pound at about age 10. I remember spending it on little cat figurines and snoopy books from oxfam

delbee · 24/09/2014 20:40

I used to get 10p a day. it always went on sweets, never saved. it was spent on either 2 oz of cherry lips or 2 oz of candy cigarettesSmile

MakeTeaNotWar · 24/09/2014 20:40

I used to get 50p and with that I'd buy a Mandy and a Bunty comic and a paper bag of boiled sweets! DD still only 4 so no pocket money here yet

DrCoconut · 24/09/2014 20:41

I remember finding 20p on the street and it seeming like a lot. I used to get 50p every other weekend to spend on sweets at my grandparents house. That was in the 80's.

BettyMoody · 24/09/2014 20:42

That hair dye called shaders and toners. From boots. Or country girl hair gel

aturtlenamedmack · 24/09/2014 21:10

Collection 2000 make up and Sugar magazine!
I got my pocket money on a Friday and we used to go and do the big shop in Morrison's after school that night - I always headed straight to the make up with my money burning a hole in my pocket.
White eyeliner (?!?), concealer, frosted lipstick and body glitter and then a copy of Sugar to follow all the make up tips inside!

AndHarry · 24/09/2014 21:24

I uses to get 50p a week. I remember watching my mum take a £1 coin from her purse and thinking that when I was a grown-up I would have a whole £1 too. I was pretty good at saving up for a toy I really wanted but one year football stickers were the 'in' thing so I bought those instead. When I was 10 I was allowed to go into town with a friend and, with my pocket upped to £5 a week, we used to buy truly awful earrings from Claire's Accessories, which we thought was a terribly sophisticated and glamorous shop :o

My children are 4 and 1. My 4yo sometimes gets pocket money: £1 a week. He likes to buy chocolate buttons but has got the idea of saving up and wants to save enough to buy his own helicopter.

sharond101 · 24/09/2014 21:26

I was a saver, my sister a spender. I did splash out and buy a pair of enormous pink triangle earrings in the local Co-op sale for 50p and loved them to bits. Also the Yazz single and a Jason Donovan single too, both in the sale also so I was a bargain hunter from early days. DS is only 2 but I want to try and get the balance right with him towards treating himself and also saving for a rainy day. Sometimes I see myself and my DH as a bit too cautious with money to do some of the things we would enjoy and I don't want that for him.

herecomesthsun · 24/09/2014 21:30

sherbert dibdabs and flying saucers

Kasterborous · 24/09/2014 21:35

Me and my sisters used to get 20p each on Saturdays to spend on sweets from the Post Office. We used to get 2oz of something out of a jar. Yorkshire mix, and sherbet pips were our favourites and around 12p so we had some left to spend on penny sweets too. If we were feeling exotic we would have blackcurrant and liquorice that were about 18p and not much left for the penny sweets. You did used to be able to get two small aniseed balls for half a penny.

BabysComingHomeForXmas · 24/09/2014 21:53

Me and my friend used to raid the penny jar and go to the shop for 1p sweets and 2p chewing gums. Strangely enough I always remember kinder eggs as being expensive back then.

smilingbuddha · 24/09/2014 22:00

I remember KP crisps were 2p a bag in the early 70's and 10p sweets in the late 70's was a big bag of sweets. As a teen I saved up my pocket money which was 3x my age, so at 13 I was getting 36p a week! (1979)
As a teen I used to save up to buy cassettes and magazines. Jackie and Just 17 were my faves! I don't think you can get a packet of crisps for 36p now?!!!

Clawdy · 24/09/2014 22:06

At primary school, three pence a day (old money!) for sweets - usually fruit salad chews and chewy mint sweets called Mojos (great for teeth!) Later five shillings a week to buy more sweets and lots of comics, then girl's magazines.Own dc used to get a couple of pounds each.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 24/09/2014 22:12

1 a week pocket money to be spent on the Sunday family 'nosh trail'!

I remember buying sweets in little white paper bags - a 'quarter' (of a pound) of rosy apples, cola cubes or pineapple chunks for 25p!

You could get a packet of crisps for 5p, bargain!

And of course the 'penny tray' where sweets such as cola bottles and spearmint chews actually did cost 1p!
In fact at our local 'paper shop' they did 1/2p sweets - 3 fruit chews for 1p!!!
Those were the days! Smile

Roseformeplease · 24/09/2014 22:38

Comics and those little china animals - whimsies? I had every one and they kept bringing out new ones. When my comics came in I nearly died of the excitement - Tammy and Bunty!!!

CormoranStrike · 24/09/2014 22:42

On the rare occasions I had pocket money it was penny mixtures for me - I still love them to this day, and I still rarely get pocket money!

thewomaninwhite · 24/09/2014 22:59

50p and £1 later as I got older. comic and sweeties here too. My DC are too young for pocket money at the moment.
