Santander have asked us to find out from Mumsnetters what you spent your precious pocket money on back when they were a kid. They'd also like to know how much you used to get versus how much you give your DC now.

Cast your minds back to the time when a packet of crisps was 5p/ 10p/ 20p/ cheaper than they are now and you could buy all manner of teeth-rotting sweets with a fraction of what your children are getting each week.

So indulge us - let us know what you used to love to spend your pocket money on. And tell us how much you got when you were a child, and how much you're now giving your children. Where did you prefer to spend the money? Or were you a saver?

Everyone who adds their thoughts to the thread will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £250 shopping voucher*.

Please note that any comments posted on this thread may be used by Santander in further marketing material (anonymously, of course).

Thanks and good luck!

We used to get 10p a week to spend on penny sweets at the news agent on a Sunday (when penny sweets actually were a penny)! We were banned from chewing gum but I remember kidding my dad that golf ball shaped chewing gum sweets were actually mint imperials.. Haha!

helcrai · 03/10/2014 16:17

Used to go down to the corner shop near my Auntie's to spend the 20p per week she gave me on some space invader crisps and a bag of 10p mix- the highlight of my week! My Dad gave me a couple of quid pocket money too and that went on "tuck shop treats" at Brownies and CYFA. Anything left over got to go in my piggy bank and when I hit my teens it got spent once a month in Chelsea Girl!
My kids are 6 & 8 and don't get pocket money yet- we pay for all their Rainbows/Brownies/swimming/dancing clubs though and they get the odd treat of sweets on a weekend. I calculate it adds up to about a £5 each per week.

I got £1.20 every Friday after school, I would get straight on my bike to the local corner shop where I would buy a cadbury Turkish delight, a 10p mix, some pickled onion monster munch and if I had any money left a 5p whopper chewy bar.
On a Saturday morning my dad would always buy me the latest copy of bunty and a Roy of the rovers chewy bar. those were the days!

Kathderoet · 03/10/2014 18:22

I used to get £1.50 a week, but my Mum bought me sweets and comics so I was a good saver, alway putting money away for birthdays and Christmas, splurging now and again on clothes for Sindy!

threelittlepigs · 03/10/2014 22:15

I used to get 50p pocket money every Saturday morning and would stop at the shop on the way home from dancing to buy a 'quarter of' something. My children now get pocket money based in how many good marbles are in their pot on a Saturday money! Some weeks they can get £2 some weeks 10p if anything at all!

CheeseEMouse · 04/10/2014 04:15

We used to get 10p on a Sunday morning which meant we could go to the newsagents and buy 10 penny sweets. It was such a treat! I also remember a pack of polos costing 12p and having those.

My memory is always of my sister being the better one at saving so whilst I frittered my pocket money she always had enough to buy something good!

JanetWeb2812 · 04/10/2014 12:48

2/6 (half a crown) a week when I was at junior school in the very late 60s early 70s. More than enough for a Bourbon (1d) and a packet of Burton's Cheesettes (3d). Fizzy drinks were expensive. A 7oz bottle of cola cost a shilling including a 3d deposit. The corner shop let us off the deposit if we stayed on the premises to drink it.

idleweiss · 04/10/2014 18:13

I got a pound on a Saturday and would fritter it away on stickers for my collection, singles from woolworths/wh smiths and fizzy sweets like Tabs! My LOs are still quite small and get a pound each which they save for the Cbeebies mag and packets of Bear paws and books ??

BreakingBadWind · 05/10/2014 00:05

My grandparents used to give us a pound whenever we saw them (every month or so) and I would spend it in woolworths on stationary. I still love stationary. The same grandmother now gives my kids a tenner (between two) when we see her (every few months).

shobby · 05/10/2014 15:09

My mum told me off for buying too many sweets with my pocket money when I was about eight, so I bought a huge block of cheese with my 6d and walked home gnawing that instead..... Smile

Sixgeese · 05/10/2014 15:21

We weren't allowed to spend our 10p pocket money, every few weeks it was counted and banked by DM. But, coins found on the street is a different matter, they were taken to the shop near school and spent on the 1p sweet jars, or buying pips, yum.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 05/10/2014 15:22

Comics like Jackie and Blue Jeans. Hair gel and hair spray to keep my layered 1980s style standing on end . Grin

startwig1982 · 05/10/2014 18:04

We used to get 50p as children. I hoarded mine and used to save to buy a toy from a charity shop or a game. Occasionally I'd treat myself to Woolworths pick and mix.
My dc are both too young but 50p a week will be the starting point when ds reaches 5/6.

neiljames77 · 05/10/2014 19:01

I remember buying crisps called bones, claws and fangs. I think they were about 10p.

Emrob86 · 05/10/2014 19:24

I didn't get any until I was about 12 and then it was £1 a week I think. Unfortunately most had to go on tampons and pads at that age, but if there was any left I'd buy sweets or a magazine.

My little one is too young for pocket money but when she's bigger I want to teach her to save up for things she wants, for example a special toy or book.

FutureMum · 05/10/2014 20:17

Lol, growing up in Spain it was what we called jamoncitos little hams, which were actually marshmallows. They were one peseta or five pesetas depending on size. Or a frozen slush puppy stick which we called a flash for five pesetas. Or Count Dracula sweets which made your tongue purple. Funny.

tobytoes · 06/10/2014 20:36

Panda Pop cherryaid and Tom Tom tomatoe crisps, then penny mixture with the rest, heaven, all with 50p!!!!!!!!

wasfield · 07/10/2014 12:03

When I was a child in the 80's my grandmother would give me 50p and with that I would buy a portion of chips from the chippy for 35p and then buy 'mix up' sweets from the local sweet shop a combination of 1/2p and 1p sweets and a few 2p sweets!

MadeInChorley · 07/10/2014 12:17

I got 50p a week. That bought me a packet of Polo Mints (7p) and a Sherbet Dip Dab (7p) from the local post office/newsagent/sweet shop. And I would save some to spend 45p on Horse And Pony magazine, which came out fortnightly. I used to get so excited on the day it came out.

The remaining money was spent on a quarter of Cola Cubes from the big plastic jars in the winter or a Lemonade Sparkle ice lolly in the summer, which I seem to remember was 11p (the newsagent was strictly seasonal and didn't stock ice lollies in winter in Scotland). I also remember saving up my money to treat friends to Cola Cubes! Smile

madeofkent · 07/10/2014 12:19

Superman comics! I loved them, they were quite thick and lasted far longer than the girlie ones my mother used to buy me. I think at that time I used to get a shilling a week (the year before decimalisation) and it cost 10d a month. I spent my money monthly because of that comic. It left me enough to buy a mug of Horlicks at the swimming baths during the winter every week, a few pennies a week were spent on sweets, but I always saved up to buy Christmas and birthday presents for my mother, because I felt sad that she never received as many as I did.

adelinehillman · 07/10/2014 13:07

I remember 1/2 penny sweets which were displayed under a glass counter - better hygiene that pic'n'mix these days! Buying Look In magazine and sticking the posters to my bedroom wall. I would save up birthday money and my pocket money for the lastest Sindy dress and loved spening money in the toy shop. Loved stickers too - expecially scratch n sniff. But I was a good girl and would occasionally buy my Mum a pot plant from the local general store. Good memories when all you had to worry about was the money in your hand...

Comingfoccacia · 07/10/2014 16:36

We got 5p a week to spend at sweet shop on a Sunday morning, we used to pick up Sunday paper too. This was mid to late 70's, small Suffolk town. I am sure it was an excuse for my folks to indulge in some nookie......
I remember my Grandma referring to it as ha'penny muck. My kids sometimes get the odd 10p to spend in paper shop. Same old ha'penny muck! Somethings never change!
Don't remember getting pocket money, started earning my own cash from age 14. I did save my xmas and birthday money though. Cannot remember what i saved for. My brother saved for ages to get a TV in his room.

mimidl · 07/10/2014 17:36

I didn't get pocket money, we were just given money as and when we needed it.
I remember going to the shop round the corner from my aunts house and buying Imps - really strong little liquorice bits in a tin. It's the only place I ever saw them and I LOVED them :)

My older two (19 & 18) now spend theirs on drink! When they were younger it was sweets mainly. We always encouraged them to save half of their birthday/Christmas money.

My youngest daughter (9), doesn't really get weekly pocket money, but if she's wants something and deserves it then generally she gets it (within reason!). The main thing she spends her money on is monthly access to an online game website, like Moshi Monsters or Animal Jam. I like her playing Animal Jam as it's by National Geographic so is educational fun ;)

She has a saving account and a spending account in the bank, but she doesn't spend too much, she just puts her piggy bank money into it!

Turquoisetamborine · 07/10/2014 17:44

I lived in the Middle East when I was a teenager. There weren't really any decent clothes shops or the usual places teens would spend their money at so I saved it up with my babysitting earnings and bought gold.

Sold it a few years ago when I was skint and got a few grand. What a savvy teen I was!

SeattleGraceMercyDeath · 07/10/2014 19:43

I used to get £1 a week from my grandparents. I had a Peter rabbit money box and saved it all up. Until one mad day I emptied it, took all the money into school and spent it at the Christmas fair. Why none of the teachers (was first school so no older than 8/9 at the time) noticed I was spending it up like daddy warbucks and stepped in to stop me I don't know!! I got a bollocking off my mother when she realised what I had done. Although she did pretend to like the wicker duck filled with potpourri I had splashed out on for her...
