Santander have asked us to find out from Mumsnetters what you spent your precious pocket money on back when they were a kid. They'd also like to know how much you used to get versus how much you give your DC now.

Cast your minds back to the time when a packet of crisps was 5p/ 10p/ 20p/ cheaper than they are now and you could buy all manner of teeth-rotting sweets with a fraction of what your children are getting each week.

So indulge us - let us know what you used to love to spend your pocket money on. And tell us how much you got when you were a child, and how much you're now giving your children. Where did you prefer to spend the money? Or were you a saver?

Everyone who adds their thoughts to the thread will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £250 shopping voucher*.

Please note that any comments posted on this thread may be used by Santander in further marketing material (anonymously, of course).

Thanks and good luck!

I can cast my mind back to when crisps and Mars Bars were just 2 1/2p each!

When I was six, I got 5p a week pocket money. Enid Blyton books were 25p, so I could get myself a new one every five weeks. Jumble sales were great as I could get books for pennies.

The first time I got 10p to spend on sweets (from a friend's mum), I recall feeling completely overwhelmed... so much to choose from!

Callico · 25/09/2014 17:38

I used to get 50p and would buy black jacks. Would also save my pocket money and buy my mum ornaments. My dad hates ornaments now as my mum didn't like to dust Grin

Callico · 25/09/2014 17:40

Have no idea why I put didn't cos she still doesn't now haha

elizaco · 25/09/2014 18:03

Rather than being given pocket money as such, I got to choose 10p worth of sweets, and I was also bought Twinkle comic.

MaryWestmacott · 25/09/2014 18:26

I used to buy comics (Dandy or Bunty, my DB always bought the Beano so I knew it was a waste to get that one), and a mix bag of sweets.

gasbird · 25/09/2014 18:52

I remember getting 50p per week and spending it on scratch and sniff stickers and Woolworths pick and mix.
When I was in secondary school £2 per week pocket money was used to buy singles on cassette

My sons are still pre school but I will be giving them some pocket money from school age so they understand about saving up and the value of things

HalfATankini · 25/09/2014 19:02

When i was about 6 I got a 10p mix every Saturday morning after ballet class. I loved it so much, it was awesome!

Once older I got £1/2/3 a week which I spent on Twinkle/Jackie/Just 17 (delete as appropriate with age...)

I was rubbish at saving, I'm a born shopper. Nothing in all the world I love more than buying bits and pieces on a Saturday morning.

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 25/09/2014 19:20

We didn't really get regular pocket money when I was a child, but most Saturdays, my brother and I would walk past the sweet shop with our parents and we were allowed to choose 5 or 10p worth of sweets each (back in the days when sweets were 1/2 or 1p each). I loved the shandy jellies and cola bottles.
For a while at the age of around 12 my parents gave us £1 a week, but it didn't last long. I can't remember what I did with it.
At 13 I got a Saturday job and earned £10-15 a week. I mostly saved my money or used it to buy CDs.
By 15, all my money was being spent on going out.
I've got a few years left before I have to battle with the DDs over what's fair pocket money, fortunately.

QuietNinjaTardis · 25/09/2014 19:58

When we were quite young we used to get 20p to spend in the newsagents. We could get a bag of 20 penny sweets including choc mice, fruit salad, black jacks, bananas and shrimps. All the old good 'uns which just don't taste the same anymore plus cost about 10p for one penny sweet!
When I was 13 I got a paper round and my pocket money stopped. Worked in a cafe from 15 and care home at 16. If I wasn't working I got no money. My mum couldn't afford it.

Ds is 4 and doesn't get regular pocket money from us but will sometimes get 20p or some pennies for doing a 'job' which gets put in to his treasure box. He's saving up for a lightsaber. Think he has about £1.50 so far Grin my mum puts £1 a week aside for each of her grandchildren as pocket money so he gets a lump sum whenever we go to visit. Ds will probably be a little bit older before we give him regular pocket money and I have no Idea how much he'll get. What's the going rate now?

PetiteRaleuse · 25/09/2014 20:00

I didn't get regular pocket money but when I did have some money it would go on a quarter of midget gems. The old fashioned ones.

Even now when I go back to the UK I stock up on midget gems (they last about two days once I get home).

Dontbugmemalone · 25/09/2014 20:32

I didn't receive proper pocket money until I was about ten but I didn't get it that often.

I remember buying about 30p worth of sweets which included a bag of star raiders (I think they were called) which were 10p. The rest was spent on penny sweets such as; chocolate mice, cola bottles, sour discs and chocolate cigarettes.

If I got any birthday/Christmas money, I usually spent it on Smash Hits magazines and books.

TheScottishPlay · 25/09/2014 20:34

I got pocket money from my grandparents every week. It's too long ago to recall exactly how much but it kept me well supplied in sherbert pips, pencil tops and scented rubbers.

KateOxford · 25/09/2014 21:07

I used to receive a £1 coin in my money box every Sunday from my Granny. I used to save it for when we went on holiday as there was a nice toy shop and I would choose a new troll! My son has just started wearing pants in the night and he gets pocket money when he stays dry all night - a few coins. He saves them for a long time and then uses it to buy lego when we go on holiday.

Selinemaratima · 25/09/2014 21:30

I always bought kola-cubes with my pennies, my nana would often give me & my brother 10p to get a mix-up, we also used to rent videos for 50p from our local shop, we nearly wore the goonies VHS out! Loved Blackjacks and these little chocolate bars with pink coconut in them, I think they we're called rasberry ruffles or something oooo and the chocolate minty pyramids - amazing! Such happy days BikeTennis Biscuit

Holfin · 25/09/2014 21:31

I used to buy Tangy bars from the school tuck shop. They were 5p each and I think they came in Oange or Lime. They would almost certaintly be banned from today's school lunchboxes !

BabyFrasersMum · 25/09/2014 22:16

I can't remember how much I was given exactly as I had to earn it by getting good reports from school or helping with the dishes or weeding. I liked to spend it on Ice poles, 10p mixtures, Smash Hits And Just 17. Those were the days :)

kittyvet · 26/09/2014 07:31

I got 20p.. It's grin up North. We went to the tiny corner shop and bought Tizer or Dandelion and Burdock in glass bottles which came with a 5p refund when you returned them. Also used to but sherbet dip dabs and half penny chews like black jacks and rhubarb and custards.

gildedlily · 26/09/2014 10:05

I got 10p to spend on the penny tray but this is soooo long ago a lot of the sweeties were only halfpence. I also got my copy of Twinkle.

My boys now get £2 each and are currently saving up for a toy they really want. They also get the occasional comic and sweets once a week after swimming.

smoothieooo · 26/09/2014 10:47

I got 5p for walking a neighbour's dog back in... oooooh.... '76 and used to go straight to the sweet shop for a quarter pound of sweets from the jar. The trouble was that I could never decide which jar (lemon or strawberry bon-bons, cough candy, sherbert pips) so would go for a mixed quarter.

SaltySeaBird · 26/09/2014 10:59

DD is a bit young for pocket money. I remember getting 30p on a Friday for years and we would go to the local village shop after school to spend it. My sisters had the same and we would normally go for penny sweets and maybe a bag of crisps. We'd always spend the full 30p though. After a while the shop stopped counting out our sweets as they always knew we'd have exactly 30p worth of sweets / chocolate / crisps in any combo. Which is when my sister started cramming in about 50p worth. I always felt too worried to do it myself but used to envy her big stash when we got home ...

WhyIRayLiotta · 26/09/2014 11:17

My DD is too young for pocket money yet. Not sure how I'll approach it as I didn't get a set amount. I was given maybe 50p going to the shop or £2 going into town (maybe every 2 months) I spent it on ice lollies in the shop and on pens / pencils / paper in town. I never used them either! They were my good pens and sat unused until I wasn't bothered about them anymore. I do remember saving up for years ok a couple of months for a mood ring (it was £6!). I loved it and thought it was magic. Until my brother explained how it was heat activated Blush

BathshebaDarkstone · 26/09/2014 11:42

Event Horizon computer magazine on tape. My DCs get £2.50 each in their bank accounts each week. Smile

NorrisCole · 26/09/2014 12:06

I'd get 50p on a Saturday and I'd buy the beano.

When I was a bit older, I used to buy mizz, sugar and j17 magazines with my £2.50 pocket money. I also bought smash hits, top of the pops and saved to buy whatever cassette was top of the charts.

I used to love the free cds with top of the pops magazine and the free gifts in every magazine.

This was late 90s, early 2000s.

mamato3luvleys · 26/09/2014 12:47

I used to get £1 a week or more if I'd gone to the shop for my nana or auntie, and spend it on sweets crisps and pop always coca cola even though I wasn't allowed to have it. Laterite was always jolly rancher sweets they were lush I recently found them in fenwicks costing about £4 !!

If we were going to the local cinema ( the fleapitt which is now knocked down) I would take 3.50 and that would be for bus fare (I'd usually walk n go halves on tabs) £1 to get in a hot dog and a drink which we'd buy from winners on the way lol what a great day out it would be too.
My son and daughter usually get about £5 each off me if they have helped around the house and behaved but my youngest son is only 1 so he gets no pocket money but always has money spent on him if we go anywhere.

slbaxter66 · 26/09/2014 13:35

I only started getting pocket money from when I was about 13, and I used to spend a lot of it on books and stationary :) I also used to spend it on going out shopping or on meals with my friends.
