Santander have asked us to find out from Mumsnetters what you spent your precious pocket money on back when they were a kid. They'd also like to know how much you used to get versus how much you give your DC now.

Cast your minds back to the time when a packet of crisps was 5p/ 10p/ 20p/ cheaper than they are now and you could buy all manner of teeth-rotting sweets with a fraction of what your children are getting each week.

So indulge us - let us know what you used to love to spend your pocket money on. And tell us how much you got when you were a child, and how much you're now giving your children. Where did you prefer to spend the money? Or were you a saver?

Everyone who adds their thoughts to the thread will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £250 shopping voucher*.

Please note that any comments posted on this thread may be used by Santander in further marketing material (anonymously, of course).

Thanks and good luck!

I got 20p a week and would be straight down to the newsagent down the road to buy a quarter bag of cola cubes or cherry pips. It was all about sweets!

My DCs are 9, 7 & 4. The 9 year old gets £2.50 a week and will either spend it on sweets or whatever he might be collecting at the time, for example World Cup football cards/Lego Minifigures etc. My 7 year old gets £2 and he saves his up for weeks on end till he can buy a Lego set of some description. My 4 year old gets 50p and he usually buys sweets!

Used to get a pound a week from grandparents and spend it on sweets and magazines. I don't remember getting pocket money from my parents till I was maybe 11 or so and I think it was £3 a week. We could earn more though by working in the garden, in the rain and cold, for 50p an hour Shock Grin

When I was about 14 I used money to buy mizz magazine and then had to hide it from parents as it had relationship and sex bits!!

My 9 year old dd has £6 a week which she generally spends on toys and occasionally sweets.

Oh yes and sticker albums and stickers, used to love buying those, especially when you got a special sticker, like a sparkly one or one in the shape of something like a dress that you put on a picture of a doll in the book

Hair ribbons from the corner shop. Threaded through cardboard stands like those you used to get pub peanuts on, with ladybirds, flowers or butterflies.

Whistle lollies from the chemist or fruity lip balms.

Barbie outfits (not real ones) when I lived in Texas- $4 or 2 weeks money.

Penny sweets, sherbert dips, dip dabs or 'fish and chips' crisps.

I wish i'd saved up for a my little pony - I held out for one for years for birthday and christmas and never got one. Should have just spent my own pocket money on it!

My dad used to try to convince us that 'golden' money (ie coppers 1p and 2p) were worth more than 'silver' money (5p, 10p, 50p etc). Just so he could give us less pocket money.

My kids tend to earn their pocket money for doing chores. about 5p per little chore - but it can soon add up.

I loved Chelsea whoppers and 10 or 5p mixes. Would sometimes splash 12p on a bag of monster munch. Massive choking hazard gob stoppers called dinosaur Eggs were lovely too. I can remember the taste so well, but doubt they would be saleable now!
