Plum, the active play specialists want to know what MNers love to cook with their children. What tasty treats do you try and make together? Whether it’s savoury snacks, heavenly cakes or delicious dinners, let Plum know.

Plum says “Cooking with your little one can be so much fun. We’ve launched the first ever Interactive Kitchen Range for children aged 3+ offering a fresh and exciting way to play that will whip up your little ones imagination into a cooking frenzy. Mini-Mary’s and pint-size Paul’s can take the challenge and cook up some mouth-watering meals in their very own, beautifully crafted wooden play kitchen. Sprinkle on a huge dollop of fun and bring the kitchens to life by simply inserting a tablet into the kitchen’s secure compartment and downloading the free Plum app for lights, fun and baking action! Blending tradition with technology, there are three kitchens to choose with four different foods to cook including popcorn.”

So, tell us your favourite recipes for cooking with your DCs, and maybe get some inspiration from other MNers.

Everyone who posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a Plum Snowdrop Interactive Kitchen worth £99.99.

We regularly make cakes which dd nearly 3 can decorate and helps mix. We make lots of simple but different flavoured cakes.
2 nights ago she helped cook dinner. She chopped mushrooms with my help ( the knife was quite blunt) and poured in the bolognaise sauce. She was very proud of herself :)

I cook dinner once a week with my son. He chooses the recipe and makes a list of what we need.
He does the majority - i'm just there for the tricky things.
I think it's a good way for him to learn how to cook and we on return have meals I would never normally make.
This week we had a fab lasagne chosen from a children' cook book that he can follow on his own.

We love making banana pancakes! :) it's just an egg an bananas! My 3 year old loves mushing the nanas up :)

WafflesandWhippedCream · 05/09/2014 10:18

I do baking with my children - cakes, cupcakes, pancakes, scones, biscuits, cheesecake. My favourite is cherry cake, because it somehow feels pleasingly old-fashioned, but DD prefers coffee and walnut cake. We make Christmas biscuits in December, and I bring out the special festive cookie cutters.

We don't cook many meals together though, I should start doing that. Somehow we are always in a rush cooking dinner, whereas baking is a relaxed, mid-afternoon activity.

I do loads of cooking both with DD (4) and my mindees. One of the little ones I care for has lots of allergies so if we are having treats it is easier to cook them than buy them. We make cakes, flap jacks, bread, pizza, chicken nougats, fish fingers, loads of different things.

As DD gets older she helps me more in the kitchen. She loves measuring things out (slightly messily!) and chopping things like mushrooms under close supervision. DD also likes making her own wraps for lunch on weekends.

Our particular favourite at the minute is making bread dough and making creations out of it!

HuggleBuggleBear · 05/09/2014 20:14

We like to make cookies usually chocolate chip. We have also had a go at buns with various decoration for Father's Day. My son really enjoys the freedom to try different fillings, decorations etc.

I make filo pastry parcels with my toddler with whatever ingredients we have to hand. It's fun trying them together when they're ready to see if we like the combination. Our current favourites are pork, carrot and apple parcels.

I cook every meal with my child & have had them in the kitchen with me from birth,I explain what we are making, sing songs & get them to help with mixing, stirring & putting food in pans.
As a result my child has a varied diet.

milliemoon · 05/09/2014 22:25

Pizzas. The kids love adding the toppings on and it's a great way to get veg down them!

rydley · 05/09/2014 23:43

cookies and cup cakes are a classic favourite in my house, my 4 year old has her own baking kit, and she loves to bake and then eat most of them my herself, (she seems to think that is what she is supposed to do)

ThemisA · 06/09/2014 06:31

We make a range of things. I try to make savoury treats as well as sweet. we make little cheese bread rolls and till them with cress and butter. Millionaire row is a favourite treat as is blueberry muffins and chocolate cake. I love cooking with children although I have to be in the right mood!

WaxyBean · 06/09/2014 07:06

My children love chopping vegetables for dinner. they're always keen to help with whatever is being made though obviously aren't allowed to do anything too dangerous. My 2 yr old DS loved helping make ice cream and chopping fruit for jam.

barbsbarbs · 06/09/2014 08:34

Our speciality is cooking shortbread, every kind you can think of, chocolate chip, white chocolate , plain, strawberry. Cooking with the kids is a valuable time spent with them, chatting about their day and just being together.

pixies13 · 06/09/2014 09:37

we make lots of fairy cakes , biscuits and scones, we also have the cutter to make the shapes out of icing and decorate with edible glitter

createbeauty · 06/09/2014 09:45

My son loves making chocolate chip cookies with me but I'm hoping to move onto something a bit more difficult like cupcakes or something later on as his confidence improves. He loves to pretend he's baking or making tea.

shellywkd · 06/09/2014 09:54

My daughter loves making sausage rolls but tends to eat them quicker than we can cook them

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 06/09/2014 10:08

Mine are teenagers now and prefer to cook without my help! We all have different types of cakes we like to make, and we frequently have the type of dinners where everyone has a variation on a theme (omelettes with a choice of additions, pizza with a choice of topping, pasties with a choice of filling). These dinners have been even more popular since one of us is now dairy free and one trying to avoid unrefined sugars and flours.

The DDs can put together a meal and like to experiment with ingredients and invent new dishes. They even clean up after themselves these days.

Chopstheduck · 06/09/2014 10:16

My kids are a bit older now, so cooking with them is part of day to day life. I usually grab whoever is free and get them to help with dinner. They love making anything that involves a lot of chopping!

ktmd · 06/09/2014 11:27

My daughter loves baking, especially victoria sponge

ChocolateCake1 · 06/09/2014 11:50

I love cooking chocolate and beetroot cupcakes with my little one.

They are easy to prepare, have beetroot in so they have some healthy elements and they cook quickly so no time to get bored whilst they are in the oven.

bridge16 · 06/09/2014 13:31

kids are never too young to help in the kitchen as long as it's a safe environment for them. My great niece Olivia loves to help her Mum with the baking

My 3yo likes to wash veg and wash up after cooking. Anything that involves pouring things into our out of a bowl and stirring ingredients with a spoon is popular.

Firsttimemum2012 · 06/09/2014 13:45

My son is 2 so we have only been baking recently - starting off slowly with crispy buns and jam tarts, now on to fairy cakes and gingerbread men - my son loves to help making tea as well, good at putting together all the ingredients for a health fruit salad.

chrin · 06/09/2014 15:26

my grandchildren love to make cakes and help with some other dishes. They like to make pastry and scoop the fillings on leaving me to cover a pie, making biscuits is also very popular. The washing up on the other hand is always met with a chorus of I need to go have a rest now.
