Watch Gossip Girl with Mumsnet and win an iPad mini

You may remember we approached you last month to come up with the name for a new Mumsnet TV club - and after much vigorous discussion, you came up with the frankly brilliant 'Watch with Mumsnet'.

Well, the day has dawned: we're delighted to announce that, in association with Netflix, "Watch with Mumsnet" is now officially in existence.

The way it'll work is that we'll watch a TV series together over the course of a few weeks, and have a thread running for the duration, on which you can discuss the plots, characters, twists and scandals with other goggle-eyed Mumsnetters. On top of this, Netflix are offering some amazing prizes if you join the discussion* ? this month you can win an iPad mini. Yes, really. You're welcome Grin.

The plan is that "Watch with Mumsnet" will introduce us all to some exclusive new shows this winter. The Christmas party season is yet to begin, after all, and it's too cold to go out anyway, so why not binge on some great telly on Netflix to get you through?

To kick off, we'll be watching Gossip Girl season 6, which is available to watch on Netflix now (along with seasons 1-5). So whether you're new to the scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite or you only have season 6 to catch up on, please do watch and get involved.

So tell us, who do you think Gossip Girl is? And, more importantly, who is inviting all these Manhattan adolescents to such exclusive parties? These questions are just suggestions - feel free to discuss any aspect of GG or tell us what you like/dislike.

Remember, you can watch every episode of Gossip girl here through Netflix. Happy watching!

xoxo MNHQ

  • Only genuine contributions will be entered: By this we mean watch and join in the discusson about Gossip Girls, not just one liners to win the ipad Wink

This prize draw is now closed.

Is this going to be the thread, or is this one just letting us know?

BiscuitsAreMyDownfall · 25/11/2013 17:16

Im 34 and I loved GG. I watched it when it was on TV though so will not contribute this time.

Chuck Bass is really british in RL and has a proper posh british accent too. So weird hearing him speak properly.

Will join in with Orange is the new Black though.

sjonlegs · 25/11/2013 17:18

Now I've not managed to catch many of the eps so far ... but I reckon it's Dan Humphreys who's got it all going on. I just love the escapism of these types of shows - my daughter and I discuss the hair and the dresses and the 'beautiful people' ... I'd love to watch a bit more and get in on the action.

noidles · 25/11/2013 17:19

Oh dear! Close your eyes if you haven't seen the show. I think if you've seen the last episode you shouldn't say...YIKES!

I've never seen Gossip Girl, but I used to work with a woman who was OBSESSED and I never understood it. I've just signed up to Netflix again so I think I'll have a watch and report back tonight.

Looking forward to Orange is the New Black though.

Gbear0382 · 25/11/2013 17:48

My friends who actually watch this inform me its Dan Humphreys. Young, well dressed beautiful people ... Can't see what the fuss is about really ;)

SaltySeaBird · 25/11/2013 19:25

It's a shame so many people jumped on this thread, saw the question "who do you think is Gossip Girl?" and were so quick to give the answer as if that was the competition question! It will spoil it for people watching it from the start.

CathBookworm · 25/11/2013 19:38

I think we can all guess who Gossip Girl is from the answers on here. Before I started watching it I thought it was going to be rubbish (!) But I saw an episode and it drew me in. I definitely advise watching from the beginning. I like the fact it is slightly ridiculous, we all need a bit of escapism. I also love Revenge.

threepiecesuite · 25/11/2013 21:50

No interest in GG but happy to hear the next one is Orange is the New Black which is frankly brilliant.

RachelHRD · 25/11/2013 22:21

Marking my spot :-)

L1bbysMum · 26/11/2013 08:10

I think this is a good choice, I've watched part of the first one and think it'll be something I can watch with my (older) daughter. I find them educational even, because there's normally some nasty behaviour from someone in these programmes, and helps me talk through with her how horrible they are being and that it isn't nice. Good choice !!

CrewElla · 26/11/2013 08:44

I was to a bit Hmm when I read that Gossip Girl was the first choice for Watch with Mumsnet. I'm not sure why a show aimed at teenagers was chosen or why such a shallow series was chosen.

Katylyn · 26/11/2013 09:24

I think Dan is Gossip Girl.

Lent1l · 26/11/2013 09:24

I will admit to having watched the first season or two of GG but it then got a bit surreal as they all seemed yto bin off college and go work out in LA. I caught the final episode of the last season when it was on TV purely because I had nothing better to do and wanted to see how they finished it all.

I do agree that it does seem a bit of a strange choice for the first show to watch and agree with a previous comment that Gilmore Girls would have been much better. Gossip Girl was aimed at a very specific target audience and I don't think most of us are it.

As I've already seen the last episode I won't be watching as my comments could give away some plot points.

Interesting idea though and I'll look out for the next thing you watch.

Berganza · 26/11/2013 10:26

Orange is the new black us quality.

Berganza · 26/11/2013 10:27

I meant IS quality

beckyinman · 26/11/2013 18:47

Dan Humphrey (aka lonely boy)

LaVitaBellissima · 26/11/2013 18:55

I adored Gossip Girl but love Tv shows like this, I've bought as a box set for other 30 something friends birthday's. It's a bit of spoiler everyone saying that it's Dan Humprey though, kind of ruins it if you know that from the beginning.

Not sure this an actual fact because I haven't checked but I am sure Blair's Stepdad is one of the voices in some of the Tom & Jerry movies my twins like watching.

If you like Gossip girl, I think you'd like Revenge :)

SaltySeaBird · 26/11/2013 19:05

So I did re-watch the first episode last night. Did anybody else and do you want to discuss it? As I've seen both the first episode and in fact the whole series before it's quite hard for me to comment on just one episode in isolation. I did think that for somebody new to the series it would be an impossible point to pick it up though.

I have to say this is one of my least favourite episodes as it feels quite disjointed. At this point the Blair and Chuck relationship is getting drawn out and tired and I didn't really enjoy the way they went to fetch Serena. Given the way that they broke off their relationships with her at the end of the last series if felt pretty false and a quick patch to bring them all together again.

RachelMumsnet · 26/11/2013 19:45

Thanks to everyone who has posted already on the thread. For those who are feeling a bit Confused by how Watch with Mumsnet works, we wanted to address a few of the Qs that have been asked and hope to steer you in the right direction (and of course closer to that iPad mini):

First of all please join the discussion on this thread (and it's great to see many already have done this). There will be no other thread starting until the launch of the next box set discussion. The idea is that you watch one or more episodes of GG and tell us what you think or join in the discussion about the series with other mumsnetters on this thread. If you're already a fan, feel free to post up your thoughts on what you've already viewed. There's no right on wrong answer to be entered into the prize draw, we just want you to join in the discussion. Everyone who joins in will be entered into the draw to win the iPad mini and a winner will be chosen at random (as long as the posts are worthy of entry - no one liners please Wink) Although it's tricky, ideally try and avoid too many spoilers in your posts.

custardo · 26/11/2013 19:54

orange is the new black is the shit - it really is.

also would highly recommend nurse jackie on netflix

GG - i'm not above teen fiction, i loved it to begin with, but blake lively gets on my nerves, her face never moves. i do like a good evil character and good old Blair and Chuck were fabulous darling.

the plot line got thinner and thinner until, i just didn't give a shit.

the voice of GG was kristen bell at the begining and then i think that changed, that got on my nerves - as i was also a huge veronica mars fan.

i do miss old Bass

until next time
x o x o

phia44 · 26/11/2013 22:18

I love Gossip Girl, there is nothing wrong with a bit of escapism in television and something to get a bit lost in on a dreary day. No - we don't all live our lives like that but it's a good laugh and seeing Chuck and Blairs love story throughout the 6 seasons i really enjoyed! Plus it's one of the few seasons to actually have a proper ending which i really enjoyed!

weepingvipers · 26/11/2013 22:26

I don't know, the chuck Blair love affair wore a bit thin for me. Are we really supposed to believe that teens with such an instant gratification lifestyle would actually behave like that? I know it's all a touch unreal but that thread just didn't hold for me. Forgive anything for love. .. Blair Waldorf? Hmm

bcd2009 · 27/11/2013 00:45

Dan Humphrey! But keep it a secret I watched it, I'm 30 - not 13! Its a bit like a guilty pleasure, but living in a house with two boys and a husband (or is that three boys really!?), I need to keep girliness alive Blush I just love the fashion and watching their lifestyle, but on the other hand, I actually get really annoyed with some of the characters, especially Serena (Grow up!!!! aaarrrghh), makes me real life aggro!! lol
