Watch Gossip Girl with Mumsnet and win an iPad mini

RowanMumsnet · 22/11/2013 17:13

You may remember we approached you last month to come up with the name for a new Mumsnet TV club - and after much vigorous discussion, you came up with the frankly brilliant 'Watch with Mumsnet'.

Well, the day has dawned: we're delighted to announce that, in association with Netflix, "Watch with Mumsnet" is now officially in existence.

The way it'll work is that we'll watch a TV series together over the course of a few weeks, and have a thread running for the duration, on which you can discuss the plots, characters, twists and scandals with other goggle-eyed Mumsnetters. On top of this, Netflix are offering some amazing prizes if you join the discussion* ? this month you can win an iPad mini. Yes, really. You're welcome Grin.

The plan is that "Watch with Mumsnet" will introduce us all to some exclusive new shows this winter. The Christmas party season is yet to begin, after all, and it's too cold to go out anyway, so why not binge on some great telly on Netflix to get you through?

To kick off, we'll be watching Gossip Girl season 6, which is available to watch on Netflix now (along with seasons 1-5). So whether you're new to the scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite or you only have season 6 to catch up on, please do watch and get involved.

So tell us, who do you think Gossip Girl is? And, more importantly, who is inviting all these Manhattan adolescents to such exclusive parties? These questions are just suggestions - feel free to discuss any aspect of GG or tell us what you like/dislike.

Remember, you can watch every episode of Gossip girl here through Netflix. Happy watching!

xoxo MNHQ

  • Only genuine contributions will be entered: By this we mean watch and join in the discusson about Gossip Girls, not just one liners to win the ipad Wink

This prize draw is now closed.

louisehutch · 24/11/2013 23:10

Well to Jump on the Band Wagon I also think Dan Humphreys.
I've watched 2 episodes so far and really enjoying it even though I didn't think it would be my cup of tea.
Just go's to show it's best to keep and open mind or you could miss out on what could be a great show.
Xx

Dan Humphrey -

However It Is Really Not For Me

But Thank-you Kindly

Still18atheart · 24/11/2013 23:45

Errm surely it should be a more current show i.e. not one which had it's final season last year.

And perhaps a show more suitable for the mumsnet demographic i.e not about a bunch of teenagers.

I think that GG is Dan Humphrey

POTC · 24/11/2013 23:52

So this new TV group requires me to pay to join Netflix in order to participate? Or is GG on normal TV too? Because I'd love to join in the chat but can't afford Netflix.

VictoriaSt · 25/11/2013 00:00

Dan Humphrey :D I was convinced it was most of the lead characters at some point though! Thought it was Jenny for ages :P

MamaMumra · 25/11/2013 00:06

It's the blond from London surely?
How do you get to win the iPad?

OK watched it now...
My contribution (v genuine)
Chuck - lovely, flaring nostrils, no one does a husky whisper like him
Blair - like
Serena - annoying (especially in flashback scene, but love her outfits)
Dan - I'd hate him in RL
Rufus - boring!
Darota - wish I had one
Lily - bad teeth, great figure
The Baldwin brother - frozen face, can't act
Georgina - annoying
Nate - eyebrows

Please can I have the iPad now because I really want one?

There's more where that came from Grin

BOF · 25/11/2013 00:23

How rude are we allowed to be? I have zero interest in Gossip Girl, but I am a fond follower of the X Factor threads, which are extremely popular.

The reason?

We all abhore the show, except as a guilty pleasure, and we are very free with our less-than-flattering opinions. It's all part of why we love the threads.

Will sponsored TV show threads ever be able to have the same vibe?

mandyr · 25/11/2013 07:44

To be honest, it's not something I'd watch. I'm too old for it and my daughter is too young. Maybe in a few years??

Trills · 25/11/2013 08:40

"Should be a more current show"? Er, no, should be a show that you can watch on Netflix, if that's who's sponsoring!

ButThereAgain · 25/11/2013 08:49

I'm sure they'll be allowed to have that vibe, BOF. Online trashing of a programme seems to be one of the major ways for programme-marketers to score a social media hit. Especially if it is a guilty-pleasure type programme where everyone can make out that they hate the programme in order to have all the pleasure of talking about it with none of the shame.Grin

ButThereAgain · 25/11/2013 09:01

It's a bit confusing that just some sponsored discussions and not others are in the sponsored discussions topic.

SaltySeaBird · 25/11/2013 09:06

I don't think it's a terrible choice! It has to be something that ties in with Netflix and it is about a group of glamorous young things sharing gossip often anonymously online just like Mumsnet Wink

Plus as it sounds like a lot of people haven't watched it, it is the chance to discover something new. I have to confess I have already watched the whole series though, it became a bit of a guilty pleasure and got me through many a night breastfeeding DD.

I'll play along and rewatch though, could do with some lighthearted distractions in life at the moment as it's all very serious and depressing!

On a separate note, Netflix, yes you have a very lovely, focused landing page but please let me have a look round your whole site. I don't like just having the option to sign up for a free trial.

Are we meant to start the discussion on this thread here? Do we just start with a discussion about the first episode?

What does everyone think of Sage as a new character? I didn't warm to her at all.

bringans · 25/11/2013 09:16

Ive seen the whole series, so I already know who they are :(, and don't want to spoil it...TBH I loved the ending.

happysouls · 25/11/2013 10:08

Congratulations on 'Watch with Mumsnet'! I'd have to admit I've never seen Gossip Girl, its not my kind of thing...so I have no idea how to answer your question! But I would like to win an ipad! I'm more into music or documentarys or world films than gossip ;-)

graemecomp · 25/11/2013 11:01

I think it's Dan Humphrey

@Helpyourself

Blush I'm embarrassed to be so snippy, but really! There are loads of recent tv series, many of which I've watched, many of which I can see are too long/ dry controversial (The Wire, Big Love, Breaking Bad, Borgen) but in case MN are still thinking about future watch together' series what about Orange is the New Black or Brotherhood? Both lighter but not quite as crap and irrelevant frothy as GG.

You'll be pleased to hear that next Watch With Mumsnet is indeed Orange Is the New Black, which is launching in a few weeks. We're hoping there'll be something for everyone Smile

weepingvipers · 25/11/2013 12:11

Ooh good, I haven't watched any of that so will look forward to giving it a whirl!

What's the process? When are we supposed to start watching and are we supposed to watch an episode, discuss, watch and so on?

DoctorRobert · 25/11/2013 15:32

I LOVED Gossip Girl. It just became more and more ridiculous as the seasons went on.

I have to admit to being quite excited when in NYC recently and suddenly spotting Dan Humphrey's apartment block when we were in Brooklyn :)

SaltySeaBird · 25/11/2013 16:03

I have to say this thread has reminded me of something I do like about Gossip Girl and that is the outfits.

I'm definitely not a fashion type and I don't own any designer brands but I did enjoy seeing the different - often hideous - outfits that they would wear.

Serena probably had the best mixture and I'd love to look that stylish. Sadly I don't think I'll ever get invited to the sort of events that require that sort of outfit, or have the figure to wear one!

So anyone up for watching episode one tonight and then discussing it tomorrow? Is that how this works?

weenwee · 25/11/2013 17:02

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Dan was GG?!?! ARGH WHY DID I READ THIS THREAD?

I watched 1-3 religiously, but then had the kid and utterly forgot about the series, and kept thinking I'd get back into it, and now...

ARRRRRRRRRRRGHHHHHHHHHH!

donnadwxm78 · 25/11/2013 17:03

Answer is Dan Humphrey and i love gossip girl, its not just for teenagers, oh well you cant please all the people all of the time !

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 25/11/2013 17:10

GG doesnt seem to really be my thing, but will gladly give it a whirl :)

I have no tv so feel quite left out on a lot of tv chat type threads.

Ummati · 25/11/2013 17:12

I used to watch it but then lost interest. I think it's Dan too
