The folks at Asda would like to know how you accessorise and personalise the different rooms in your home.

Here's what Asda have to say, "We've recently launched our Autumn / Winter Home catalogue in store and online at Asda Direct, full of inspiration for your home at affordable prices. With more than 1000 stylish solutions for your home, we're interested to find out how you accessorise and personalise your home"

So how do you refresh the rooms in your home? Do you add cushions and candles or replace furniture and repaint? Does each room have a particular colour scheme or do you prefer the white, minimalist look? Do you re-arrange or re-accessorise the rooms in your home often, or have they looked the same for the past few years? Is there a particular room youre especially proud of?

Please also take a look at Asda's Autumn / Winter Home Collection and let us know if theres anything that inspires you to get creative in your home

Whatever you do to personalise and accessorise your rooms, we'd love to hear about it.

Everyone who adds their thoughts and ideas will be added into a prize draw to win a £200 Asda Direct voucher.

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

Most things are fairly old. We've been in this house for 4 years and only just have the money to even think about redecorating etc. Buying accessories seems a bit of an extravagance, and I have to admit to raising my eyebrow at the thought of replacing cushions, bedlinen etc that is perfectly good just to change the look of the room. It's just not on our radar at the moment.

flamingtoaster · 10/10/2013 18:58

I like curtains and carpets to be a blank canvas (and uniform throughout the house) which increases the sense of space. We inherited a lot of furniture from my FIL so when we want to refresh a room it's changing the curtains, throws, cushions, bedding etc. I really love the Vintage Bird and Script Cushion.

BellaVida · 10/10/2013 19:54

I need a bit of help in this department, I really do! I so want each room to have its own 'look'. I know the colours I like and the styles, but I need help pulling it all together.

I had a look at the Asda site and I liked the home page as it does gave some room ideas, although not the full room picture, but I was disappointed to click through and see each product in isolation.

I would love to see whole room schemes, then be to roll over items to know what to buy to recreate or build up the look.

From a practical point of view, we are a big family so need space saving, clutter free designs with added storage, which are child safe and pretty hard wearing! There isn't much spare money either with four children, so we have to do things on a budget.

I haven't really considered Asda homeward before, except for some basic kitchen items and plain towels and sheets, but I'll definitely gave a look in future. :-)

We are in a process of redecoration. It's taking ages. But I use photos of onus and our children on days out, have the blown up to A4 or A3 size and frame them. Also I live candles and cushions. It's much easier to colour co-ordinate candles and cushions downstairs and let everything else be neutral.

Upstairs the children have picked the colours for their bedrooms so the candles and pictures on the stairs and shared areas lean towards neutral colours.

I like to add colour to a room, one wall generally, the others being cream/white.
Then curtains, throws and cushions with patterns to bring it alive.

This is the easiest option as if I get bored then painting one wall and changing the accessorise is not too expensive.

I do like the personal touch too, not everything from ikea! So I buy second hand bits and bobs, painting them if needed.

crazykat · 10/10/2013 21:04

We have fairly neutral colour walls in the family room and kitchen, we have family photos up in the family room and hallway. In the family room we have candles/cushions/vases in colours which coordinate to add a bit of colour. In the kitchen I have small coloured bowls and artificial flowers. These are changed every so often to change the decor without the expense and time of re-painting. We tend to re-decorate every other year as its expensive.

In the main bedroom we have different bedding and curtains to personalise the room. In the DCs room there are two girls in one and will be two boys in the other. They have bunk beds so they have painted walls and they each choose their own wall transfers to put round the wall by their bunk so they all feel like they have their own space. The DCs also have character bedding that they choose and it's easy for anyone to see which bed belongs to which DC by the things they've chosen to personalise their space.

mrscumberbatch · 10/10/2013 21:16

I like to keep things quite minimal but. I do like a quirky vase or ornament.

I tend to buy accessories and keep them for years, things like rugs and cushions might change but ornaments/frames/mirrors etc stay the same unless I find something I much much prefer.

I don't like matchy matchy and wouldn't buy a group of items from the same range.

N0rt0nmum · 10/10/2013 21:37

Once you have your large items in a style you love you can change the look by adding accessories. As our rooms are white or cream they are a perfect backdrop to add colour. I like to update rooms with the seasons. For spring/summer I update a room with light patterned cushions and flowers, the artificial arrangements are very realistic and lasting. Change to a few throws and a fluffy cushion in orange or another warm colour as Autumn sets in. At the moment it's a kitchen refresh, Asda's light blue blinds, colourful canisters and vintage spots range will give me the country vintage look I am aiming for.

sharond101 · 10/10/2013 21:55

We have a feature wall in most rooms and by changing it's colour it re decorates the room. A few matching accessories (cushions, vases) and it's good to go. We use stickers on DCs rooms that way when they get bored of a particular theme it's easy to change. Ebay is good for these in terms of price and selection.

manfalou · 10/10/2013 21:58

Having two young children (3 + 6 months) there isn't really much room for accessories... our house has been invaded by little people stuff. The conservatory is the only room with cushions and I hate do not like ornaments. We have a lot of photographs of our family around the house and 6 canvases on the wall of pictures we took ourselves on safari a few years ago.

We have Magnolia Walls in EVERY room... if we do ever change things around it can be any colour and to repaint its really cheap to do. We tried yellow walls in the hallway for a couple of years... not quite sure what made us do that!

When we redecorate its literally a new lick of paint and through carpet clean... no money for anything else. Apart from when we did the kiddies rooms. Before DS2 was Born we had to turn his (now) room from an office to a nursery which was a complete overhaul...new carpet, underlay, painting skirting boards walls and ceiling, new light fitting, furniture from DS1. This also meant that DS1's room needed a change with new big boy furniture and a new theme...dinosaurs. New bedding, dinosaur wall stickers, dinosaur rug, dinosaur light fitting etc.

We're not massive fans of revamping the home in general... things get done when they NEED doing, not just 'because'. I can't say I'm inspired because its not really something that interests me...although I do Love cushions. I would love a scatter back sofa but DP hates cushions so no hope their.

bluebump · 10/10/2013 22:04

Now that my small child has stopped drawing on the walls I've started to repaint them. I've gone for white everywhere and am brightening up the rooms with nice blankets, cushions, throws etc.

Having looked at the Asda site I quite like the look of some of the bedding sets. I like to have a browse around the store and generally come home with various home bits.

Turnipvontrapp · 10/10/2013 22:14

Our children's pictures that they have painted are framed and hung on our walls - they mean more to me than any I have bought.

I love lots of colour. And maps - am obsessed!

Theimpossiblegirl · 10/10/2013 22:52

I'd like more stuff on the walls but DH still needs convincing. :)

I love cushions and candles. Asda do some nice candles which also make cheap presents.

I've had a browse through the collection and am pleasantly surprised. It's a really nice range, as nice as Next (which I like, sorry to the MNers that don't) but cheaper.

poachedeggs · 10/10/2013 22:59

I shove a hoover round if I want to refresh it.

We don't have the cash to do anything inside, although a lick of paint once in a while helps lots. If we have a little spare I might well have some nice candles or flowers.

In the future I'd like to get new sofas and cushions for the living room, new curtains and ideally a new carpet. I'm not one for fussy tat, so no sculptures and ornaments for me, but we have a few pictures here and there.

rockybalBOOOOa · 10/10/2013 23:00

I am a big fan of keeping the decor simple (plain white walls, white bed linen, white towels etc) and then adding colour/interest with cushions/curtains/other accessories. I like quirky things and don't go for the matchy-matchy look. Quirky doesn't have to mean expensive. Places like Asda, Homesense and Ikea are good for inexpensive quirky items. I change the scatter cushions on the sofa quite often and currently I am quite tempted by the squirrel cushions I have seen in Asda a few times. I'm not at all keen on big floral print especially for wallpaper. Stuff on the walls tends to be things I've seen in a gallery or craft fair or things I have made myself and framed. My style is definitely eclectic and I am rarely dictated by a colour scheme.

smokinaces · 10/10/2013 23:02

I like rooms themselves to be fairly neutral, with coloured accessories. Huge rugs, with contrasting curtains and blinds. Flashes of colour. Pictures and paintings. Art that is personal, colours that make you smile. I love cushions, everywhere. And colours like green and teal. Furniture I like to be white or brown, walls pale - magnolia, white, pale green - but accessories, the brighter the better. Pink toasters and tea caddies. Huge teal rugs. Bright green blinds. Each room slightly different, but flow well.

CheeryCherry · 11/10/2013 06:06

We do have colour themes in each room, mainly with cream or white walls but colourful accessories. I do repaint each downstairs room every one or two years which keeps them clean looking. We keep the rooms clutter free and tidy, and hoover round every day. I do make sure each downstairs room is tidy before I go to bed. We travelled a lot pre-children so have at least one or two fairly unique items in most rooms. I also accessorise with coloured cushions/towels/pictures.
It suits us!

Bubbles85 · 11/10/2013 08:02

We decorated every room when we moved in a few years back. Stripped all the wallpaper, painted in neutrals and got curtains to match. However it was very time consuming and I think if we move again we'll be looking for somewhere that already has a good finish.

Vajazzler · 11/10/2013 08:04

We keep most of our house neutral with magnolia walls wooden floors and a black leather sofa. We then change the cushions/curtains/twigs etc to the latest 'in' colours

BruthasTortoise · 11/10/2013 08:11

We tend to accessorise using low cost, changeable items as we've a house full of small boys Smile. Most of our big furniture is older or second hand so I refresh using bright throws, cushions and artwork.

Theincidental · 11/10/2013 09:45

New build house and I've not done much to the walls as yet, but I have added lots of paintings and soft furnishings to give the rooms shape and colour themes.

I don't like matching everything and prefer eclectic decorations. I also like natural materials and recycle bits and pieces from junk shops.

I also have a toddler so everything is above waist height, and lots of storage boxes.

CheekyChimpsMummy · 11/10/2013 10:37

Love, Love, Love switching things up at home, Sometimes on a small scale by changing throws, cushion covers, and decorative items, sometimes on a bigger scale by changing the feature wallpaper along with updating furniture. I think I missed my calling in life for interior design and fear I'm too far over the hill to go back to college now to do a design course!

Dreaming of getting the Tate Sofa range in the Asda collection for my next lounge redecoration! I can just imagine curling up on the corner group sofa with my family with the fire on!! (oh & accessorising the room to match the new sofas too) Too may tempting items in the new Autumn/Winter Collection. ...MUST.....STOP....LOOOOOKING!!!

unquietmind · 11/10/2013 10:43

So how do you refresh the rooms in your home? Do you add cushions and candles or replace furniture and repaint?

That depends on available costs. Mostly its just a rejig of the smaller things to change the look. If we change furniture its more about need than want, and we go the BHF furniture shop, other charity furniture shops or at a push Ikea for the cheapest things. Last time we refreshed it was cushions, rug, throws, curtains and vases

Does each room have a particular colour scheme or do you prefer the white, minimalist look?

I prefer the minimalist look (not just in white though) but its our landlords house so we dont change too much. I often think about colour schemes and themes but its just not affordable. I have a couple of dream schemes; a nautical driftwood white and pale blue on wood theme, a pale duck egg and white room for relaxing in and if I had a mansion and loadsamoney I would have a cushioned, soft room with lots of low soft seats and floor cushions, with hanging taffeta coloured fabrics. I dont know how to describe it but I am sure I have seen it on the tele somewhere in a historical eastern drama of sorts! Any ways to describe this MNers let me know!

Do you re-arrange or re-accessorise the rooms in your home often, or have they looked the same for the past few years?

They look mostly the same as they are the landlords but we refreshen the paint every 2 years and reaccessorise when it gets tired. Its hard to have lots of accessories cos of the kids though

Is there a particular room youre especially proud of?

Only the ones in my mind! Sadly not, the house is functional rather than decorated for enjoyment, although I would like to get to the point where I can decorate and enjoy and be proud.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 11/10/2013 10:44

We have paint rather than wallpaper, as repainting is quick, inexpensive and can be done regularly. Our basics are neutral, so go with whatever paint we choose.

All our bits and pieces mean something, not just generic Dunelm Mill / Next stuff. We have things we have brought back from holidays, presents from loved ones and things that used to belong to grandparents, as well as things we have just seen in passing and liked. It isn't all matchy-matchy.

For DD we have used wall stickers for her bedroom and playroom, as this way we have been able to easily decorate the rooms in an age-appropriate way without a lot of effort.
