~ Have you ever bought any M&S Kidswear? What's your overall opinion of it? If you're a regular buyer, what makes you buy? If you're not, is there anything specific that's stopping you? What other brands/shops do you buy kids' clothes from?
Yes, I have. I think it is generally reasonable quality, but I have bought things in the past that have become threadbare and holey very quickly.
The clothes seem to come up quite large, which I didn't like for DD1, as she is small, but is good for DD2, who isn't.
There are certain types of clothes I would automatically turn to M&S for - underwear, socks, tights etc, there is a good range, and they are usually nice and soft, and last well. I would also probably go there first when buying coats. I do look at their other clothes too, but it wouldn't necessarily be the first place I would turn.
I buy kids' clothes from a huge range of places- Tesco, Sainsbury's, H&M, C&A, John Lewis, Next, Boots, Boden, Jojo Maman Bebe, Lands End, Esprit, Aldi, markets, independent shops, Ebay, charity shops, jumble sales. Anywhere really (although I don't particularly like Mothercare or Primark)
~ When you're shopping for kids' clothes, what are the most important factors? Is it cost, quality, colour/design, style or brand/label? Or a complicated combination of all of those?!
I would say the most important factor for me is style/design. Not that something is "stylish" but that it is in a style that I like and that my daughter finds comfortable. Which is sometimes difficult to achieve! I would say quality is more important than cost - I have 2 daughters and would rather pay more for something that can be handed down to the younger one than pay less for something that won't last well.
Having said that, I won't buy something if it isn't a nice colour too!
~ Do you tend to shop in store or online for kids' clothes and why? If you shop in store, do you look online at what items you might buy beforehand, or do you tend to go and see what takes your/your DC's fancy?
I do both. I don't live in the UK at the moment, so I am doing more shopping online in UK shops that deliver overseas, as it is quite expensive here, but I do like to go to the shop itself when I can so that DD can try things on. I find that particularly with trousers we need to try them on as there is such a disparity with sizing.
~ Is there anything that you think M&S could do to encourage you to buy their kidswear? Or buy it more often if you already buy it? Is there anything missing from their kidswear ranges that you'd like to see more of? Do you think they cater for certain ages better than others? Or for boys better than girls or vice versa?
I only have young daughters, so I don't really know about other ranges. I would say in general, things that make me more likely to buy are :
Good quality materials, ideally lots of organic cotton, nice and soft, maybe velour and towelling as well. Stuff that is practical for young children.
Clothing that is a good fit. I'd love to see something like Vertbaudet do, with 3 "fits" for the same item of clothing - ie slim fit, regular fit, relaxed fit. Those button adjustable waistbands are a nice idea in theory, but don't work that well for slim children like my daughter, you just end up with loads of fabric uncomfortably bunched up round the waist.
A nice range of colours, attractive patterns. Not too much pink, and definitely no idiotic slogans or meaningless sentences, or random numbers to try and make something look sporty (although this is generally for boy's clothes). I won't buy clothes with writing on them (a small logo is acceptable.)
~ Thinking specifically about the M&S baby ranges, what's your overall opinion of these? Do you think there's enough variety? Is there anything you'd like to see more of?
I like the baby ranges - I particularly love the packs of bodysuits in rainbow colours. I wish you could get packs of vests for older children in these colours, I would definitely buy them.
I also used to love the padded reversible velour jackets and trousers you used to be able to get for babies, not sure if you still can. They were brilliantly practical and comfy.
I think the variety is good, as ever with baby ranges, it would always be nice to have more colours. Often you find a style you like, or that fits your baby, and then it is only available in that colour, when if there were more colours available you might buy them too.
