As part of Estée Lauder's Drops of Advice campaign, they've asked us to find out about the best pearls of beauty wisdom you've ever received - what were they and who were they from? What wonders has the advice done for your skin/hair/nails/whatever?! If you had to give a younger version of yourself some beauty advice, what would it be? It could be something like 'get more sleep'(!) or something more elaborate involving slapping the contents of your kitchen cupboard on your face in a homemade face pack?! Either way, please do share!

Everyone who adds a comment to this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win 1 of 15 bottles of Advanced Night Repair (30ml, RRP £41). That's a lot of prizes up for grabs! Please note that you have to be aged 18+ years to take part in the prize draw.

Mumsnet is promoting this sponsored discussion thread on behalf of Estée Lauder. The thread will be open until Friday 27th April, when we will close it, do the prize draw and notify the winners on that day. The winners' details will then be sent to Estée Lauder so the prizes can be sent out. Please only add your comments if you're happy for us to pass on your details to Estée Lauder in the event that you win the prize draw. We will only pass on the prize winners' details, and these will only be used for the purposes of sending out the prizes.

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw
MNHQ

PS If you don't win this one then the folks at Estée Lauder are also running a 'Drops of Advice' competition on //www.esteelauder.co.uk/dropsofadvice/index.tmpl where you have an additional chance to win a product and a night in a 5* hotel for two. For more information please visit //www.esteelauder.co.uk. Terms apply. Closing date 29/12/2012.

Make sure you use something with SPF every day and always take your make up off before you go to bed!

Wear sunscreen on your face even in winter, drink lots of water and get as much sleep as you can.

Always moisturise damp skin, as moisturiser traps moisture, it doesn't add it.
Always use sunscreen, even in winter
Short, neat nails look better than talons
ALWAYS wear mascara!

Wear well fitted and comfortable shoes - if your feet hurt it shows on your face.

Exfoliate your body using a handful of sea salt and baby oil twice a week.

Look after your teeth - the dentist is your friend.

Do not smoke.

Alcohol in moderation.

Sun in moderation.

Do not spray perfume on your neck. The alcohol can be very drying.

Avoid sugar.

Stretch your body whenever you can - even just by reaching for a cup from a shelf.

Always hold shoulders back and stomach in.

Turn the central heating down:

  1. It dries your skin out.

  2. You burn more calories if you are slightly chilly.

  3. You save money.

  4. You help save the planet.

Invest in a decent cleanser that suits your skin type - no point putting expensive moisturiser onto dirty skin, it will only seal the dirt in.
An eyebrow wax will lift your whole face.
You can make an easy body scrub with a cheap oil and sea salt. Can also use coffee grounds but is messy in the shower!
Having a good massage should do wonders for all of you, physically and mentally. I glow after a good massage.
(all above learnt from friends/therapists)
Layer smells by using same shower gel, body lotion so you won't need so much perfume and the gentle smell will not be overpowering at first, but will last all day (from glam Italian friend)
One statement is enough - a stunning coat OR bag OR necklace but only one at a time (same glam friend)
Every hour sleep before midnight is worth double those after.
Eat well, everything in moderation, walk in the fresh air every day and remember a genuine smile is the best beauty asset (my mum)

moisturise with spf (at least spf 15) every day from as young as possible. In the winter double moistruise. Clean your face daily and try not to frown!!

Always moisturise

Put high factor sun cream on ageing areas - the chest to stop it turning crepey plus face and hands

Best beauty advice I was ever given:

Mix foundation with moisturiser for a more even make up.

Keep your face out of the sun, don't smoke and drink loads of water. Oh, and don't believe the pseduo science on teh products tested on 225 women out of about 30 million.

Don't spend money on loads of products, a warm damp flannel will clean sufficiently, and not be harsh on your skin. Moisturise morning and night, lather it on at night so it can work its magic. Plenty of hand cream throughout the day, and sunglasses handy at all times of the year! Water and sleep in abundance, and don't smoke....those extra lines are awful! And as my good (older) friend said, don't forget your heels and elbows!

Best tips I wish I'd told myself are ...

Don't smoke, a tab isn't pretty or cool.

The best suntans are fake but sunburn can be helped and soothed with full fat Greek yoghurt applied thickly.

Picking spots is a big mistake. Get a blackhead remover if you must pick spots, and sterilise it regularly.

Keep homeopathic sulphur tablets at home for when you have really sore deep red angry spots, the tablets are AMAZIBG

Smile much, much more!

Floss!

And perfume should be worn in moderation...unless its Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess!

Throw away your make up and realise you are fine exactly as you are. Very liberating.

Don't smoke. I didn't regularly wear base/foundation until my 30s but I needed it sooner.

Use products that you enjoy - cleansing and moisturising shouldn't be a chore.

Exfoliating does make a difference.

Always use an SPF. My Dad and my Nan both have vitiligo so were wearing SPF20 in the 70s when everyone else was slathering themselves in chip fat for sunbathing. They look amazing for their respective ages - proof that it works!

Use the oil cleansing method for cleaning your skin (or if you like to use 'products' then try a hot cloth cleanser which is doing the same thing).

Exercise - running or walking outside is the best tonic.

Use a wet toothbrush to gently exfoliate your lips.

Never read glossy fashion magazines. They will only make you feel shit and remember - even the models don't look like that, the airbrush is a wonderful thing.

Can't believe I forgot this one!

When having a bath or bathing the kids, put just a drop or two of olive oil in there. It's cheaper than buying bath oil and saves you having to moisturise when you come out. Instead your skin will be silky smooth and because it has no perfume or other irritants, it's great for sensitive skin and for children with excema.
