Channel 4 have asked Mumsnet to find out what you think about their new series of One Born Every Minute (starting today, Monday 10th January at 9pm). We've recruited a special panel of volunteer viewers to add their comments to this thread. The panel are a mix of Mumsnetters, all of whom are parents, some pregnant, some not, some have seen the programme before, others haven't.

They would also love any other Mumsnetters - ie folks NOT in the panel - to add their comments here. Anyone who contributes to this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner, drawn at random, will win a £50 Amazon voucher.

We'll also be having a thread after the second programme, next Monday.

So, please post your thoughts and comments on the programme below. We'd welcome 'live' feedback during the broadcast as well as a comment at the end. If you can't post during the broadcast please add your thoughts by the end of Tues Jan 11th.

If you are a panel member please identify yourself as one when you first post.

Many thanks and enjoy!

How did you find the whole experience swaliswan Did you forget the camera was there?

MrsShrekTheThird · 10/01/2011 21:47

do we reckon Janet's going to end up with a CS?

MummyCherry · 10/01/2011 21:47

Why do they tell you not to scream, i couldn't have stopped if i had wanted to.

I definatly think midwives should have been throught labour themselves before they open their mouths

Swaliswan · 10/01/2011 21:47

You can hear the cameras moving so no I didn't forget them.

Ewe · 10/01/2011 21:47

I wondered the same re: best behaviour domesticslattern, I assume they don't install cameras for 24hrs like some documentary shows do. Guess not everyone wants to be filmed - I certainly wouldn't!!

Do the parents involved get anything for doing it?

Stupid midwife saying 'you won't be having another baby soon, will you?'.

domesticslattern · 10/01/2011 21:49

Right SkiingGardener, I'm moving to Southampton for my next one!

MummyCherry · 10/01/2011 21:49

I know, der i haven't had this one yet!

Swaliswan · 10/01/2011 21:49

You get a DVD and yes the cameras are there 24/7 but not necessarily always filming.

MrsShrekTheThird · 10/01/2011 21:49

If it had been my second or third dc they wouldn't have had time to switch their cameras and lights on... they'd have missed it.

I have loads of admiration for these ladies and families who are willing to have the cameras in, I don't think i could have done it with number one but would quite possibly with the other two (practicalities aside, as above!!)

SilveryMoon · 10/01/2011 21:50

Ok, so there's only 10 mins left, and I know they can't cover everything, but I think the only other thing I'd like to see, is an episode/half an episode dedicated to seeing the new mum's on the ward after they have rested etc and find out how they are getting on in recovery.
Or at the end of the series to have a 'catch up' episode with those featured

Heathcliffscathy · 10/01/2011 21:51

If birth wasn't so incredibly miraculous this programme would make very depressing viewing indeed.

Tonight we have had all the labouring women flat on their backs no one suggesting that moving might help.

A midwife telling a mother in full contraction that screaming won't help (WTF. widely known that making any kind of noise reduces pain).

A midwife stating that 'she doesn't know what the next midwife will want to do about you'. Infantilising and disempowering the mother entirely.

To think that if the hospital were happy to show this, what must go on OFF camera makes me shudder.

A total indictment of UK maternity services.

But like I said, birth (under any circumstances) is such an amazing miraculous thing, that by exploiting this the filmakers have a hit on their hands.

I think it is absolutely shameful that the programme does nothing to give even a hint of a suggestion that there might be alternatives to giving birth like this (and I'm not even talking about homebirths!).

MummyCherry · 10/01/2011 21:51

Yeah, that would be quite good, at least show how you forget it all almost immeadiatly

Swaliswan · 10/01/2011 21:52

The BF counsellors in Breastfeeding Babes wanted to be filmed but it never happened. I wonder if we'll see any BFing this series.

pink4ever · 10/01/2011 21:52

I love this show! Couldnt help but chuckle at steph(mean I know!) but thought the midwives were really good in humouring her.Just shows how everybodies birth experience is so different.

MrsShrekTheThird · 10/01/2011 21:52

I'm liking that idea, Silvery.

Didn't they do updates on the website, last time? And episode to see them later would be great, in the postnatal ward. That bit seems to get missed out in all these progs.

SilveryMoon · 10/01/2011 21:52

exactly MC

MummyCherry · 10/01/2011 21:53

Actually i felt most comfortable on my back and as i had an induction and epidural with all three, i think this is a very good protrayal of my experiences, I don't know many of my friends who weren't on their backs

I don't know MrsShrek I didn't look at the webpage.........and tbh, not sure I would bother either.
I'd like to see it on the telly but not sure I would go to the effort of logging on and reading/watching on-line

Swaliswan · 10/01/2011 21:54

Poor Janet. It takes me back to having my first but I managed to get the baby out before they took me to theatre.

TheSkiingGardener · 10/01/2011 21:54

A normal happy birth up on Broadlands would be nice. It's not as if you need to add drama to the event.

Who called the ceasarean? Looks like you might be right.

Dylthan · 10/01/2011 21:55

I feel so sorry for any one pg with their first and watching this episode. Steph scared the shit out of me and I know what labour is like so god knows how you would be feeling watching this while pg.

SilveryMoon · 10/01/2011 21:55

Poor Ralph Sad
