Everyone is welcome, and the thread disappears after 90 days.

Thank you for the last thread @lougle. I hope the doctor was helpful and DD2 isn’t feeling too rubbish this morning.

DS1 has used the last of his EOTAS hours today. There will be at least a few weeks before the EHCP is finalised and funding restarts. He will hopefully have his operation during that time, but it is still going to feel like a long time without that provision.

All the honks @Lougle what a ghastly day. I don’t like the sound of the temperature that doesn’t register. Hopefully they take it again. You must be so tired but the caring doesn’t stop to give you a break does it? I’m thinking of you.

Here a very tiring noisy day. Ds is quite stressed. I’m afraid I just bought Lego and chocolate. Not sure if it was poor parenting or survival. I have to go back for yet more CT scans. Feeling a bit run down so perhaps a good thing but it feels like never ending dr related nonsense. Good news pharmacy has finally got ds’s prescription so last step in sight.

Its cold here! Actually may have to turn the heating on!

Lougle · 30/09/2026 13:53

Thanks for the honks @Zzzzzs . I bought DD1 chocolate milkshake on Monday. Survival is victory in our world, I reckon.

They were getting her ready for theatre but then the GI surgeon came and said no surgery today because it's too risky given recent cholecystitis. It's more likely that they'd fail keyhole and have to open her up, and more likely that they'd damage her bile ducts. She's very upset.

Zzzzzs · 30/09/2026 16:06

Oh that’s hard @Lougle poor little gosling. What’s the plan going forward?

We are all tired and a bit crotchety here. I can’t wait till my dd2 can drive herself around. I’ve suddenly realised since ds has learned to make his own breakfast there’s a possibility I might get a lie in if everyone can get themselves to work….test not for months yet though.

Lougle · 30/09/2026 16:37

That's a glimmer of light @Zzzzzs .

Plan is to see how eating and drinking goes, discharge but unclear when. Low fat diet but the nurses insisted that biscuits were low fat when I asked for something that she could eat (she hasn't eaten much since Monday), so I sense a knowledge gap! Surgery is scheduled for 26/10 so we just have to try and keep her stable until then.

ds has learned to make his own breakfast

@Zzzzzs Shock what is this you speak of? Good luck to DD2 so you can get your long awaited lie in.

@Lougle you have to wonder if the SW read any of DD1’s notes. I hope you can keep DD2 comfortable for the next few weeks.

AI can provide low fat baking recipes for DD, although I guess it depends how low fat her diet must be?

A few weeks ago, I inputted the contents of my fridge, freezer and store cupboards to make it easier for AI to create the menu plan for DD1 coming home. I was astonished when it told me, I had quite a few baking ingredients (true) and here were a few low fat recipes for me to make!

So last week, I made DD1 a banana and oat loaf - it had no fat or sugar, except for an egg and some milk. The bananas provided the sweetness and moisture, you’d get from fat. It was quite nice, although it started to go mouldy after a week, with not having any sugar!

I also made her low fat cheese scones, because she loves those. They had cottage cheese and Parmesan instead of cheddar, and there was less lard in them, iirc! Snacks with a reasonable amount of protein always come in handy for her. She’s eaten chicken/lamb/beef/pork all her life, and one day she’ll refuse to eat it!

Lougle · 30/09/2026 20:01

We've escaped. I pointed out that they weren't doing anything for DD2 now. Nothing was documented but luckily the ward Sister had overheard the Consultant say that if she was stable DD2 would be able to go home at some point. So she twisted the junior Dr's arm to phone the Consultant at home and confirm discharge.

Violasilkie · 30/09/2026 20:27

Glad you have escaped @Lougle though shame they couldn't do the operation straightaway or sooner. I hope DD2 can get through to surgery without being in pain.

DH has been at his old work today and got back late last night and left early this morning. He did have an interesting day and met one person who said to send his CV from another company. DH hasn't applied for anything and seems happy enough retired and I have projects he can help.

Plumber has come back with a quote and we have paid the deposit, its currently Friday or Monday so pushed back a day. But that's good as DH bit is nowhere near ready. Hopefully can get everything ready tomorrow.

Zzzzzs · 30/09/2026 22:08

🤣 @roaringdragon I know it is AWESOME progress. (Though breakfast is two bowls of cereal so not desperately challenging). He can also make chocolate spread on toast for himself for a snack….we are so cool and teen-ish now.

I do find it so hard when normal goals are not attainable not to feel I am letting him down by accepting we can’t iykwim? How do I not have this worked out by now?

PurringTiger · Yesterday 00:33

@Zzzzzs we have a book of whimsy words that crotchety is going in. DS really is awesome, there are a lot of stages to making cereal and toast.

@Lougle hope the op goes ok end of the month.

When I read big health worries in the pub I can’t help feeling like it’s main board shock headlines but pub local news. Honk honk.

I got offered a seat on the tube today and gratefully accepted.

PurringTiger · Yesterday 00:35

@LathkillDale that is such a good treat work around. I will look at those type of recipes thank you.

LathkillDale · Yesterday 06:45

@PurringTiger Thanks.

Three more whimsy words for you, depending on where you come from. Where I come from, people used:

Mardy - meaning wimpish

Nesh - feels the cold easily

Clarty - I don’t know the spelling; but it means dry food like pastry or sticky, that’s hard to eat without a drink

Lougle · Yesterday 06:53

Thanks @PurringTiger . Yes, everything gets boring when it's regular.

@LathkillDale that's funny. 'Mardy' here means moody. "She's a right mardy madam, that one."

I'm not sure if DD2 will go to college today. It would be better for attendance purposes but she hasn't had much to eat since Monday, or sleep. It might be a bridge too far.

DD1 visited DD2 yesterday but we had to cut the visit short after 15 minutes because she was really struggling. She said she didn't want to go to hydro today. I couldn't work out whether it was the thought of going without me, or whether it was an overhang from last week not going so well. We'll see.

DD3 has her date for the ESA assessment through. She's upset with me because she'll need to leave school 45 minutes early. I might phone to see if they can change it.

Zzzzzs · Yesterday 08:22

Mardy here is usually “Mardy arse” and means complaining/moaning/argumentative.

My children tell me my language is very old fashioned. Apparently nobody says “pat of butter” anymore. Except obviously they do because I do and so do all my contemporaries.

I say a pat of butter, but then dialect was more common when I was growing up, before television smoothed over it to an extent imo?

drspouse · Yesterday 09:35

Pat of butter is not dialect - it's used all over the world.
Mardy is a complaining person here too.
My DCs suffer from an excess of independence when cooking food unfortunately. We have to rotate hiding places to stop the stocks of favourites disappearing immediately. I bought some tea cakes for the weekend and caught DD taking them out of the freezer yesterday. DS has a nose for giant jars of Nutella.

PurringTiger · Yesterday 11:00

@Lougle i meant local news as in it just doesn’t get the same attention. Although I’m sure being up A&E repeatedly is very boring on top of scary and tiring. It feels like the trickier life gets the more it becomes so normal that it’s hard to decipher what is an extraordinary event anymore because it’s all got stress attached in one way or another. Anyway what I’m saying is it’s a lot, what you are doing is such a lot and I think of you often.

Mardy is moody for me but I don’t use.

OneInEight · Yesterday 11:17

It is dh I mainly have to hide food from here 😂. Thank you beta blockers which remove any self control when it comes to sweet stuff. Hope your dd2 avoids any more infections before the operation @Lougle . dh had his gall bladder out a few years ago with keyhole surgery and had a speedy recovery so I can see why they want to do this albeit the rollercoaster of psyching yourself out for an operation that does not happen is horrid. In our news ds2 has just been offered a job by the company he did an internship at. Delighted and terrified at the same time for him.

LathkillDale · Yesterday 11:28

@OneInEight Congratulations to DS!

Lougle · Yesterday 13:48

@OneInEight that's wonderful news! I'm so pleased for him.

PurringTiger · Yesterday 14:30

@OneInEight that’s a great update! Congratulations to DS2.

Violasilkie · Yesterday 14:40

Congratulations to your DS @OneInEight

Never used mardy or pat of butter - growing up it was knobs of butter which didn't age well as a phrase and now we just call it butter / portion of butter / cubes of butter if in a cube. Its cool DD always tells me no-one says nowadays.

We hopefully have plumber in tomorrow or if not Monday so are whizzing through the final things needed. Luckily DS left his bathroom open, seems keen on me doing work in there. He had moved the money I left in there that I found. And had moved the handcreams and lip salves I bought him from Sri Lanka, think he's using them. I spent most of the time cleaning the kitchen, the entrance hall, moved the drier and cleaned behind it and cleaned the laundry room from DH and the electricians debris. DH did more work on laundry room and left a note for DS not to sit or lie on the bathroom worktop as now the drier isn't underneath - DH put up support strips of wood for the worktop and did more on skirting. Skirting just has one tiny bit to do. DH assures me he is on schedule and it will only take an hour to finish. I did point out he said that three times before on different days and he laughed. Though it looks more hopeful this time. My part the bathroom is completely ready. I also researched tiling to see options and am trying to see if we can save existing tiles in there as they are plain white to be less disruptive to DS and think I've found a way. I've cleaned all the white tiles and most of the grout and they look reasonably good still. But we need to take height down from 90cms to 51cms which previously was tiled at some point but those tiles were removed leaving old adhesive on walls. Tried today to get old adhesive off and looks like will be fine to get it off. Whether walls are flat maybe another matter.

Fififizz · Yesterday 14:53

Just hopping on. @Lougle really sorry to read about DD2. I hope she remains stable and the op can go ahead as planned at the end of the month.

College is still happening for DC. I think I expected it maybe to all come undone by now. It all seemed quite ambitious, and still does, but it hasn’t yet so that’s tentatively good news. I struggle to say things with any certainty as it’s all been precarious generally with DC with an awful lot of treading on eggshells.

I haven’t got around to looking into the credits thing. The acronym for which escapes me now. I’m still struggling massively with exhaustion/burnout/overwhelm feelings and general decision fatigue.

Hugs and honks.

Yesterday, we went to some friends for lunch. They live in N London. We drove past Tree House school. It was astonishing to see it, after I have heard so much about it over the years!

I would have said the same @drspouse but I can assure you not one of my daughters friends use it. They say “pack” of butter and thought pat was both funny and weird. So much so that I had to prove to her it was normal language not some weird “posh” vocab from my over privileged childhood.

@OneInEight that’s brilliant news. I love it when a gosling spreads their wings. Thank you for sharing we need good news.
