Have to confess that I like that Holland poem too and yes, I am occasionally partial to a bit of schmaltz - that other overtly schmaltzy poem made me cry! I think its each to their own where they draw their strength from and of course...we are all at different stages etc.. Sitting well and truly on the fence here, I can also see how some of these poems might appear patronising. Each to there own I guess....Have to say that I have had a wry smile at some of your home grown poems and know exactly where you are coming from on those too

Jimjams · 01/08/2005 19:50

welcome to beirut

More my scene (but I'm a cynical cow, and it does go a bit gooey at the end).

Post away ks you've had me in stitches.

but all of a sudden I feel really fluey so once ds3 is in bed will be retiring to bed..... thanks though....

Jimjams · 01/08/2005 19:53

oh god I must be ill because the bit in beirut about marvelling at normal development has got me in tears! (the number of times I stare open mouthed at ds2).

Fio2 · 01/08/2005 19:54

TheRealMrsF · 01/08/2005 20:04

yes JJ- i am the same about the 'normal develpment' side of life.
especially when i 'sneak' occaisionally onto the Behaviour threads and read about what some parents find 'distasteful' about the behaviour of their tots.
(join us at ANY mealtime for an illustration of beirut!!!)

Fio2 · 01/08/2005 20:26

They are tripe - but in the main harmless tripe

Although I have to say there are some that are guaranteed tear jerkers for me. And sometimes if I 'nned' to have a good try I'll go and find one!!!!

But generally speaking they are pretty crap aren't they

soapbox · 01/08/2005 20:32

Just read this properly- the beirut one is good - I've seem it before, but I don't think I would ever categorise that as schmaltzy!

TheRealMrsF · 01/08/2005 22:27

couln't resist this...just found it posted in a CHAT thread....not a soppy one!!!!

-:¦:-?:'"":?.-:¦:-?Mother's Bohemian Rhapsody ?-:¦:-?:''''':?-:¦:-

Is this real life?
Is this just fantasy..
Caught in a school run
No escape from domesticity
Force open your eyes
Look up to the skies... and Scream

I'm just a housewife
I need no sympathy
so its easy come easy go
No return from this we know
Anyway the wind blows
they always want lifts home
from me....from me...

Mama I need a drink,
Not water only Juice
In my green cup
don't want blue

Mama I've just stubbed my thumb
And now I've gone and lost my highchair tray!

Mama - waaaaaaah
I know I always cry,
You sometimes wish I'd never been born at all

I see a little silhouetto of a brat
Scaramouch scaramouch will you drink your bl**dy tango
Tikkabilla's frightening
Very, very frightening, see
Wacky Warehouse...waccky warehouse Wacky Warehouse, take me there

Bala-mo-ry
would you like to go?!
(like to go?)
Bala-mo-ry
would you like to know?!
(like to know?)

They're just two poor boys
Who think nobody loves them
Staring all night at some pork sausages
Bismillah! No - we will not let you go - let him go
Bismillah! We will not let you go - let him go
Bismillah! We will not let you go - let me go
Oh no it's Gina
Oh no not Gina!
Come on Gina let me go!
Oh mama mia, mama mia, mama mia let me go
And Annabel has a blender put aside for meeeee
for meeeeee, for meeeeeeeee

(OR Beelzebub gave a devil of a son to meeee, to meeee, to meeeeeeeee
for meeeeeeeeeeeeee)

So you think you can spit apple mush in my eye?
So you think you can scoff bits of cake on the sly?
OOoooooooooo baby,
don't ask why again baby,
Your curious mind,
is giving me a kind,
of a migraine

How can I love you and
yet feel that I want to die
ooooh baby -- need some sleep tonight baby
Can't get up at 3am anymore ...

Ooh yeah, ooh yeah
You are all that matters
Anyone can see
You are all that matters - You are all that matters to me

Anyway the wind blows..

Pass the bucket Maude.

eidsvold · 02/08/2005 23:14

Fab poem JJ - love that - used it in an english lesson and had secondary students dissect it - interpret the poem through any medium they wanted to - art, music etc - great responses.....

anyway - beirut is better... more realistic ...

the last part is the bit I like...

'Your child will make progress. When he speaks for the first time, maybe not until he is 8 yrs old, your heart will soar. You will know that you have experienced a miracle and you will rejoice. The smallest improvement will look like a huge leap to you. You will marvel at typical development and realize how amazing it is. You will know sorrow like few others and yet you will know joy above joy. You will meet dirty faced angels on playgrounds who are kind to your child without being told to be. There will be a few nurses and doctors who treat your child with the respect and caring that any child deserves. There will be people sent into your life who will show you concern and love like few others. Knowing eyes will meet yours in restaurants and malls, they'll understand, they are living through similar times. For those people you will be forever grateful. Don't get me wrong. This is war and it is awful. There are no discharges and when you are gone someone else will have to fight in your place. But, there are lulls in wars, times when the bullets aren't flying and bombs aren't dropping. Flowers are seen and picked. Life long friendships are forged. You share an odd kinship with people from all walks of life. Good times are had, and because we know how bad the bad times are, the good times are even better. Life is good but your life is never normal again, but hey, what fun is normal. '

eidsvold · 02/08/2005 23:18

esp the part about no discharges - whenyoua re gone someone else will take up the fight.. imagine going over the top ( of the trenches) and when you are cut down... someone else is there to still come over the top - or to pick you up and help you to the first aid station ( oh no mor emedical professionals ) ready to be patched up to fight again
