DH took DS and a friend to the park this afternoon, he parked in a disabled bay (DS is ASD and has a blue badge).

When he returned a lady was taking pictures of our car and others so he asked her what she was doing.

she said "im sending these off to the council, they will want to see the photograph on your badge you know".

DH told her to send it off then as he had nothing to worry about, she asked him why and he told her he has 2 children with disabilites both with blue badges, he said she looked at DS and at him and tutted and walked off.

The cheek!!!!

can you not ask for help from the family fund or social services for your bills? or the benefit agency if you are on a low income and receiving benefits?

wrt using such offensive terms, i usually go off on a long (but calm) rant, explaining why i dont like it, where the term comes from, did they think my son was amusing, would they like it if i said something they found insulting and offensive to a member of their family

by the time i am done their ears are bleeding and they usually remember not to say it again

at least in my presence

lou33 · 09/08/2008 18:23

twig i agree, but in the case i mentioned she saw quite clearly i had my badge on display

i think it's good that people do check, but what isnt good is trying to make those who are entitled to park there feel like crap for doing so

there does seem to be some hierachy in the mind of the elderly who use them, like they are the only ones truly entitled to use them and everyone else has a damned cheek for daring to park there, lol

no i meant with help for your winter bills

ikwym about car = luxury but it really isnt in my case

i live in a small village, one bus an hour, not suitable to get a wheelchair on, and even if i could the cost of us all would be about 15+ quid for a return trip into town

i would be stuck here with the kids the whole time unless i took taxis , round here they are expensive and not that reliable

before i could drive, after exh left, i used to walk 4 miles a day just on school runs, it was hideous in the winter especially for ds2 in his wheelchair, and sometimes treacherous with the icy conditions

if you get child tax credits, do you get the extra disability element? they forgot to add mine initially, even though they knew ds2 was disabled and we went over it in my application

BriocheDoree · 09/08/2008 18:48

blimey, Riven, don't people realise DD has ears and a brain behind the figure in the wheelchair. Can't believe someone would call her that! (Well, actually I can, in a rather sad WTF way). I would go for the stick every time!! Had a really good friend at college in a wheelchair and I remember what a nightmare those things are to push around!

lou33 · 09/08/2008 18:49

oh you would be surprised how often that word is still used

i think you can get a loan through the benefits agency to help pay bills, if you get the right benefits

it might be worth asking

also i know you can register your child as sn with the utility companies, which means they are less likely to cut you off, esp if they need to use equipment which runs off electricity etc

maybe that is worth asking about too?

my water board also do a scheme for those on benefits, whereby if your bill is over £100 they cap it, or pay the extra. or something, can't recall exactly what as we never go over that, but perhaps you could look into that as well?

tell me to sod off if you have already tried all this

lou33 · 09/08/2008 19:00

riven, i get so many people talking to me instead of ds2, even though they have heard him chatting away

mostly i let it go but sometimes i do snap, and end up saying, "you can ask him yourself, it's only his legs that dont work"

where did you get the raincovers from? i have struggled to find any made to fit child sized chairs

double check with the gas/electricity, it isnt something they generally tell you, no harm in making sure

lou33 · 09/08/2008 19:11

i didnt mean you would get a discount from gas/electricity, but if they have you on their sn register, it means you wont be threatened with disconnection

misdee · 09/08/2008 19:12

can you use communuity care grants for things like heating bills?

I have all of this to come .... and I'm a punch first think later kinda gal .... maybe I should enlist for anger management before I kill someone

lou33 · 09/08/2008 19:20

thanks

no they still can, though they do offer a key option, but if you are renting as i am, i cant really give that permission

and on top of that, if you offer to pay a bit each week, they still send letters out for the outstanding amount, and charge £14 for each letter they send

how they expect someone on low income to pay it off whilst they are adding on more is beyond me

luckily i got someone to pay the outstanding amount, but not until and extra £28 was added on (i had paid half off already myself)

and if you go on a key meter the unit price is higher, so you are penalised for being poor

I know its been suggested on here before but the rotary club, lions club or round table.
All of them support local charities & individuals, I know our local branch has provided canopies, padded seats & rain covers for a major buggy & also additional bedding & plastic sheeting.

I'm no good at sewing either, isn't there a craft/sewing section on mn?
