DH took DS and a friend to the park this afternoon, he parked in a disabled bay (DS is ASD and has a blue badge).

When he returned a lady was taking pictures of our car and others so he asked her what she was doing.

she said "im sending these off to the council, they will want to see the photograph on your badge you know".

DH told her to send it off then as he had nothing to worry about, she asked him why and he told her he has 2 children with disabilites both with blue badges, he said she looked at DS and at him and tutted and walked off.

The cheek!!!!

yes

it was a joke, not everything has to be dealt with in deadly seriousness

doesnt matter

anonandlikeit · 09/08/2008 16:08

I'm fed up with the looks too.
We have a CMAX (no down payment). We don't need a WAV but we do need something thats OK to get DS2 in & out of & a boot big enough to take a m buggy or wheelchair, plus all the other family crap that seems to fill my boot.

I hope that if ds2 ever learns to drive (dream on) he can get a motability sports car - may help him pull!

Ah maybe thats where i'm going wrong, if i get something smaller i won't ahve to take them both with me. At least it would stop all the fighting in the back seat.

im sorry i really didnt mean to start a war.

i merely meant that a car which was 3ft off the ground was probably very unsuitable for a lower half physically disabled person. IE the massive (but only on the outside) 4x4 which was a good 3ft climb to get in probably wasnt used by someone needing a wheelchair - i didnt see a hoise, OR a disabled badge. Neither was the 2 seater sports car big enough to get anything other than 2 slim able-bodied people in, there was no chance you could get a wheelchair in (unless like riven they strapped the thing on top of the car!)... needless to say that didnt have a blue badge either. As i said 3/4 of the cars DID NOT DISPLAY a blue badge, and many of the cars - at a glance- would seem like they were not suitable for anybody other than able-bodied, childless (no car seats either - unless they get strapped on the roof too! but hey at least you couldnt hear them then... and thats gotta be a good thing )

I often fantasise about having a very small car (sports or not, i dont care!) merely for not being able to fit in everyone!!!

misscutandstick · 09/08/2008 17:05

hoise??? hoist

...sports car NOT big enough to get anything other...

childless (....) people.

sorry fir the typo's

misscutandstick · 09/08/2008 17:06

omg... FOR the typo's

misdee · 09/08/2008 17:11

not all disabled people need wheelchairs.

dh didnt use a wheelchair for most of his illness. just for a few weeks before he went on the artificial heart.

Raine3 · 09/08/2008 17:21

My car was an MG BGT and when it was too difficult to get DS in and out of I went for a 4X4 - Freelander ... and to be honest I don't see why a 4X4 is unsuitable ??? yes it's high up but it beats bending down trying to lift him in and out all the time.

.... and if my DS can ever drive (unlikely but you never know) I will get him whatever car he wants even if it bankrupts me, disabled or not

lou33 · 09/08/2008 17:58

misdee beat me to it

there are lots of hidden disabilities

not having a blue badge when using the parking space is a different thing however, there have been lots of heated discussions on here about that!

lou33 · 09/08/2008 17:59

also from my pov, it is better to have a a higher car than a lower one, to lift ds2 in and out of his wheelchair into the car seat, for the sake of my back

misdee · 09/08/2008 17:59

of course abusing disabled bays is a no no in any case.

dh still gets evils off old people. despite being a high profile local disabled young man, and having so many scars on his chest it could rival a map of the london underground.

riven, ds used to have a sn car seat, bought through the family fund, but when it came to the time he needed the next size up at £500 , his ot said that we could get away with a car seat for non sn as long as it had back and side support, so thankfully i didnt have to spend weeks applying for a new one (or travel all the way to milton keynes to get ds2 fitted for one and have it installed)

lou33 · 09/08/2008 18:07

misdee, i still get the evil stare even with ds2 in a wheelchair!

i had a run in with one old "dear", as she saw me pull in and put my blue badge out, and as i got out of the car, she said to her h v loudly that she was just waiting to see which one of "this lot" were disabled.

i told her not to panic, i had a blue badge displayed and it was my youngest who was, as she would see his wheelchair if she gave me a few seconds, then added she was fortunate that her badge was for someone who could actually walk at all, unlike my son

she scuttled off with a grimace

yes you have different needs for a car compared to ds2/myself

we needed something big enough to take 4 kids a wheelchair and me as the driver

hence we got the renault grand scenic 7 seater

with the back 2 seats down there is a massive space for his chair and shopping and i can fit the kids in

in fact if i need the back 2 seats up as well, which occasionally happens, i can just about squeeze his chair in upright, but everything else has to get stuffed around the passengers

why do you have to give it up?

lou33 · 09/08/2008 18:13

oh dont even start me on people using that word

brave is the person who does in my presence

lou33 · 09/08/2008 18:13

or stupid

I actually think we can't have it both ways

We're farked orf at people parking in disabled bays without the correct badge.

But equally farked orf at anyone daring to check our cars for a badge being displayed or double check with the driver that it is actually fair usage of the space.

So what? We want self-policing with no observable consequences to us?

Surely the people who check and make a point are doing so because they care ....no matter how irritating those who are eligible find this care surely it is better than nobody giving a good god-damn ...
