I've just spotted this:

There She Goes
BBC4 10pm - 10.30pm
First of a 5-part series, starting today - 16.10.18.
1/5 - One Day in the Life of Rosie Yates: It's a typical Saturday for 9-year old Rosie, who has a severe learning disability.

I'll be watching - if possible! Anyone joining me?

Talking of presents...!

It's The 2 Day Final Episode Of The First Series Warning

Episode 5 of 5
Tuesday 13 November 2018 on BBC4 at 10pm
Ben
Rosie is incredibly excited - Gandalf is finally coming because there is going to be a birthday with lots of presents! It doesn't matter to Rosie that it's Ben's birthday. The extended family set off for a birthday meal.

For the uninitiated, the first four 30-minute episodes of this StarStarStarStarStar series are currently available on BBC iPlayer.

Just watched episode 4. The family wanting to help and getting it wrong was well done although they all got over it quite quickly !

hazeyjane · 12/11/2018 19:07

Oof.

That was worth the wait. Stupidly watched it just before going to a meeting (...of the endless meetings) with ds's teacher. She probably thought I had been crying about the prospect of the meeting.

It is so beautifully done and so messily real.

WonderBoy · 13/11/2018 17:58

The only less than positive review I've read about TSG said - I'm paraphrasing, of course - that it's too crammed, too fast moving. To me, the reviewer came across as disconnected from the whole subject anyway, but on that point I could see what she - and our Didi above - are getting at.

In part, it might be a deliberate ploy to keep people who wouldn't normally watch something about a family including a severely disabled kiddo engaged and entertained.

I think though that it must be incredibly difficult to fit essentially 9 years of family life in to two and a half hours of television. I like the pace because it reflects life here - eventful, at times chaotic and unsettling, hard to keep up. Yet there's still time, in their life and ours, bafflingly, to fit in some love, some laughs, some joy, and some absolutely mind-numbing boredom - and let's not forget the drinking and mini cheddars.

Yes, I wish each episode was an hour long, yes, I wish it was on at 9pm on BBC1 - but it's a great start. And I really hope it is a start. 'Rosie' is 12 now in real life, I think, so that's another 3 years Shaun and his family might want to share a part of with us. As I know with WB, the pre and early teen years are as much of a roller-coaster as before, so I'm watching this space.

Glad you finally got to watch last week's episode, hazey. Your Oof sums it up perfectly. I hope the meeting went well. Perhaps you could recommend watching the series to HB's teacher? Wink

Wishing you better luck with catching tonight's episode Wine

Another sneak peek from tonight:

The family are out for dinner for Ben's birthday but Rosie wants in on his presents. Luckily she has ordered a surprise gift for herself...

It's the '45 minutes to go to tonight's episode' claxon 📢

Some of us will have wine, others will have gin, some will have tea, others will have coffee. Some of us will be lucky and able to watch, others will have to be locked in the loo to watch, and others will be able to watch when half an hour eventually and miraculously appears.

Most of us will have tissues.

There might be communal Jaffacakes .

Some of us will be accompanied by naked munchers of mini cheddars.

However and whenever you watch, I hope to meet some of you afterwards on the thread for our last hurrah 🎉

No tears now gang. Or not too many.

Ok....ready here with tea (cracking headache - hence, no wine) and a mince pie. Dh said he wasn't sure he wanted to watch it, so I have him the hard stare.

I wonder if Rosie's present is going to be like the time Hazeyboy ordered 3 × £139 Lego sets, 4 x Black Panther Gloves, 3 x XBox One's and signed us up for Amazon Prime for a year, on his iPad.....how we laughed.

You realise we may have to carry on this thread when the series has stopped, don't you?

WonderBoy · 13/11/2018 22:39

I'm a bit too upset to write more at the moment, but back soon if you want to carry on without me. X

As I just wrote on the other thread- it was brilliant. Just brilliant. Many tears here for my own Ben.

LittleSwede · 14/11/2018 06:44

Heading over here from other thread in Chat. Have a 4 yo DD with recently diagnosed ASD. Waves Smile

Only just watched the first episode on iPlayer last night and thought it brilliant. Yes, it was upsetting but somehow also reassuring to know that we're not alone.

It might be fast paced but manages to catch the little everyday things that makes up life with an SN child. It's so quick one might miss it, but Rosie's mum quickly instructing dad and DC to swap over for plastic mugs when Rosie joins them for pizza and TV is just typical of the small but essential adjustments that need to be made to keep everyone safe.

Looking forward to watching the rest if the series but will have wine and tissues at hand thus time!

chickensaresafehere · 14/11/2018 08:26

Was a bit disappointed about Gandalf.I thought he would be the one who would just 'get' Rosie & they would have a close relationship (with his photo being on her bedroom wall) Infact he was very similar to my fil,he rarely even speaks to my dd.I think he just thinks if he totally ignores her she won't bother him Sad & the mum was so like mine, she has a song for every occasion too, & always puts her foot in it by saying trigger words (birthday, christmas etc)that send dd off on one!!

LadyLuna16 · 14/11/2018 10:12

The trigger words were making me and DH laugh. We’re like that. Have to have conversations out of earshot but DD seems to have supersonic hearing when the conversation isn’t about her!

ReverseTheFerret · 14/11/2018 12:23

I loved the "you've just bought the world's most expensive z" with the lamp.

PanannyPanoo · 14/11/2018 13:42

I have been reading but not posted yet. Loved this series. I want more! Hope you are ok Wonderboy.

livpotter · 14/11/2018 17:23

Hope you're ok wonder Thanks

I also liked the bit with the angle poise. My Ds hasn't got to the point of ordering things off amazon but he did one ask Siri to search for the nearest local gay clubs once (pretty impressive for a minimally verbal then 3 year old).

The first thing I thought when they got to the restaurant was that they need to pen Rosie in! That open table never would've worked for us.

Ben seems like such a lovely little boy and I loved the ending with Hippo.

I agree I was a bit sad that Gandalf wasn't that exciting but to be fair, he is very like my dad was. The grandma is also very like my mum. Although my mum would never dream of trying to get ds into different clothes (he's worn the same outfit for nearly 2 years)

LittleSwede · 14/11/2018 19:43

Hope you are ok Wonderboy.

Watched episodes 2 and 3 tonight, again brilliant but upsetting. DH came in last five minutes of episode 3 and I don't think he's ready for it. I am enjoying it though, but had a Great and T ready for tonight.

LittleSwede · 14/11/2018 19:44

Great and T??? I meant G and T, great as it is 😁

Marshmallow09er · 14/11/2018 19:54

Just watched this week's.
Oof the bit in the nursery where Ben's fact was 'I have a sister called Rosie'.

Reminded me of a few weeks ago at DD's school when they were all asked what chores or jobs they did at home. Most kids said stripping bed or similar, DD said 'keeping my brother happy'.

Wonderboy 💐, hope you are ok.

hazeyjane · 14/11/2018 20:44

I too hope you are ok, Wonder. Wine [jaffa cake...] for you.

I ended up watching the first 2 episodes again today, instead of taking the nap I should have taken after 2 very sleepless nights. I am going to miss these little episodes of love and chaos.

I think the Gandalf thing was quite clever really, building up the idea that he was going to be someone who 'got' Rosie and connected with her....when actually he was the most confused by it all of everyone and the magic connection was his pretty limited range of desperate raspberries and peek a boos!!

Ben is such a bittersweet character, so beautifully written and acted. It actually hurts to think about him and Hazeyboys sister's.

So much love and warmth shining through at the end.

Partridgeamongstthepigeons · 14/11/2018 21:23

Totally agree with you Hazeyjane about Gandalf. I thought the build up and reveal was brilliant.

GoldenGumballs · 15/11/2018 07:26

Oh that was a good last episode thought the Dad sorting his head out was a bit rushed but the Grandparents were well played. Gandalf needs to learn intensive interaction Grin

DS1 was in awe of that cupboard!

He sees a lot of Ds2 in Rosie. Even down to the hair (pre awful. Haircut. I hack ds2's myself)

I like the fact that while dt's character can be such an arsehole, it's far more nuanced than that. Dh appears to have become more self aware as a result of seeing that.

This week, we've had Ds2 ill with a cold and attached like a limpet. Ds2 loosing his lunchbag. DS1 losing his bloody phone. DS1 and me catching ds2's cold. And far too much wine.
