Ds1 - lovely news

Hi all :)
As some of you know we have had a very rocky road with ds1 and his sen/sn.
When he started at his current school in year 3 he was working at level 1s across the board and was really quite far behind his peers. It was a very worrying time.
He is now in year 5 and going up to middle school in August.
I have just read his end of school report.
He is now;
4c for maths
4c for reading and
3a for writing
His progress in all subjects has been "outstanding" and "good"
:)
Not bad for a child dx as severely dyslexic 18 months ago and whose year 3 teacher told me that I may "have to accept the bottom sets are where he belongs" (bitter? Me? :))
His spelling still needs work (but it's soooo much better than it was) and I am hopeful that he will continue to improve at high school
So....thanks to all who have helped us on MNSN (there are far too many if you to name!)
Neither me or my son would be where we are today without you x

That's excellent news, Badvoc. Just goes to show what can be done when appropriate expectations are set and work is done to overcome limitations.

That's all I can say. Easy for me to say that in a blasé way but its taken us nearly 2 years...
Look into therapies, don't let the school fob you off, teach yourself how to help your dd. once I had my epiphany about schools and their attitude to dyslexia I was a much happier and less stressed person!! :)

Badvoc can I ask what provision your ds has and does he have a statement?
My dd will be starting y3 in sept and is currently around p6-7. I've requested a SA but have been told by senco and EP to expect it to be refused :(

My son has no provision and never has.
He has been on SA and SA+ since year 1.
He was dx as severely dyslexic at start of year 4 - a report which my husband and I paid for - and none of the recommendations were met/followed.
Eg: no 1-1, no specific dyslexia interventions. In fact, the put him in a speech and language group! Still haven't figured that one out tbh....I think they thought "oh we will stick her ds in an intervention...that should shut her up"
Yeah. Not so much :)
I have to say though, In a way they did me a favour. I soon realised that it was down to me.
And I just got on with it.
My relationship with the school got a lot better after I stopped expecting them to know how to help my son.
Sorry - I know that's probably not what you want you hear :(
Imvho lots of schools DO want to help our kids but they have neither the resources nor trained staff to do so.
You dont say what your childs issues are but I would rcommend checking out the following;
Retained reflex therapy (rrt)
Auditory integration training (ait)
The tinsley house programme - there is a support thread on MNSN for those following the programme.
I learnt about all of these things on MNSN and am so thankful.
We did all 3 with ds1 and - well, the results speak for themselves I think :)
(NB: some of the therapies do cost ££ but there are cheaper ways to do the therapies yourself at home. For example, the first part of the TH programme is simply a high protein less junk diet, some simple exercises and some supplements like omega 3. Check out the book "the brain food plan" by robin pauc. Also rrt can be done at home from a book like "the well balanced child" by Sally Goddard Blythe)
