TINSLEY HOUSE SUPPORT THREAD - PART 3!!!! :)

Badvoc · 05/04/2013 08:55

Well, here is the shiny new thread for all of us either doing the TH programme, doing part of it, or thinking about doing it! :)
A brief synopsis of stage 1 of the programme can be found in the books "is that my child?" Or "the brain food plan" by robin pauc;

Stage 1 of the TH therapy consists of:

  1. Daily Multivitamins
  • Omega
  • Zinc & Magnesium
  1. Healthy eating
  • High protein, low sugar, no artificial sweeteners, additives etc.
  1. Specific neuro development exercises done 3 times a day
  • Takes about 4-5 mins

And that's it :)

Stage 2 involves computer programmes to sort out eye tracking and convergence which over 80% of children with reading/writing problems have.

We are coming to the end of our time doing TH I reckon...certainly by the end of the summer I think. It has been in many ways much easier than I thought at the beginning but of course takes commitment and time.

I am so glad we "took the plunge". It has made such a difference to ds and to our lives :)

Daft - that sounds really lovely, what a great end to the year.
Badvoc - Tom sounds as if he's going great guns.

Happy hols to everyone who are jetting off. We're taking the train to France tomorrow and can't wait!

Are we on for 4th August?

Badvoc · 06/07/2013 07:10

Yep!
4th August is ok for me....

Badvoc · 08/07/2013 15:57

Just read toms leavers report from school....
He is now;
4c for maths and reading and 3a for writing - exactly where he would be expected to be at end of year 5.
:)
His progress in reading and writing has been "exceptional" and "good" for maths.
:)
He has improved in reading and writing since last assessed in march.
:)
All his other subject progress is described as "good"
:)

Aw, badvoc that's such great news! I'm so pleased for you and Tom! Smile

Both you and him are a real inspiration; you for all you've done to get him here and him for all the hard work he's put in.

I can only hope we'll be in a similar place in few years too. Smile

Badvoc · 09/07/2013 20:59

Thank you.
Ds2 also got a lovely report from pre school too :)
Am on the homeward leg now...only 3 days to go!
Kids are both tired and hot and ready to break up.
Hope you are all enjoying your hols....we are off on Saturday!

We've been to see Robin once now and are due to go back next week.

DS has been doing the stairs and spinning chair. I'm just wondering, what usually comes next ...?

I'm not looking forward to driving back and forth to the New Forest in one day in this heat. Also wondering whether we'll be able to do the next set of exercises in the summer holidays, when we'll be away a lot.

So I might leave the next appointment until just before DS goes back to school.

Thank you x

brightstars · 12/07/2013 21:10

Hi there, we're off to see Robin tomorrow. Does anyone know if there is a child friendly beach nearby? It seems a waste to head straight back to the midlands on such a hot day. Thanks.

shoppingbagsundereyes · 12/07/2013 21:44

We had a lovely time at mudeford? Or mudeborough? Google it. We took a little boat over to a lovely beach and had a fabulous meal in the beach cafe. Wasn't at all far from Robin. There are a number of really nice beach stretches near him, he recommended one with apparently amazing ice cream last summer but I can't remember its name.
Reading back, this hasn't been the most useful post, sorry :)

shoppingbagsundereyes · 12/07/2013 21:45

Skewiff, most of us have gone from stairs and spinning to HTS or it's newer version which I think is engaging eyes but that is for convergence and your ds may not have a convergence problem.

Lookslikerain · 12/07/2013 22:14

Hi all. This thread has been mighty quiet this week! Too much sunshine to enjoy. To be quite honest, I think I'm over the heat. I'm in Scotland, we aren't built for it. And the DC have been sleeping badly as their rooms are like furnaces.

We spent the day today with friends, had a picnic, paddling pool etc. It was really lovely and all the kids enjoyed it but it was a real eye-opener on just how behind DS is. They were playing "star wars" and pretending to have light sabres etc (and pretending to kill each other which I was inwardly a little Hmm about 3yos doing...). DS just totally didn't get it. They tried to join him in but the whole thing was lost on him. Most of that is down to him not having the language or being able to understand what they were saying (also, he's never seen Star Wars!) but I was so Sad watching him and wondering if he'd ever have friends. He was interested in the other kids and was playing alongside them but couldn't join in. He still enjoyed himself, but a lot of the time he was playing on his own. Sad

I have that constant niggle in my brain that this won't work for us, that his problems are something TH can't fix, that Robin and DH and I are wrong and he just is autistic and I should just deal with it and get on with things. Though even if he is, the nhs can't offer us anything else and I'll be damned if I'm going to just sit about doing nothing. He's come really far since we started so something must be working.

God, what a depressing post! Apologies, but I feel better getting it out. It gets me down.

Prince saw your other thread. I fully sympathise with what you were saying. Hope you're feeling a bit better.

Tomorrow is a new day!

skewiff · 12/07/2013 22:16

OK thank you shopping bags. DS does have a convergence problem. But we have tried engaging eyes before we visited Robin (someone was selling it through here) and DS could not do the target practice bit at all.

His eyes cannot see 3D stuff (he has a squint) - so I don't know how spinning chair and stairs will have changed that - but we'll see ...

Thank you.

PrinceRogersNelson · 13/07/2013 09:16

Hi everyone,

Lookskikerain I have the same doubts as you in regard to whether this is right for DD.

I do not know what is 'wrong' with her as we have no diagnosis, but her development is very behind and to be honest we do not know if she has any cognitive issues or not. We will just have to see when she gets to school.

I am trying it as there is nothing else open to us to be honest.

But we are seeing results. Her development is moving on but she is still miles away from her peers and is still different. My DD would not be able to play make believe games.
I was talking about DD started school with someone and they said once she gets her little group of friends and they're all skipping in the playground she'll be fine. And I just thought, that is do far from where DD is. She is not capable of friendship yet and she can't jump, let alone skip!! And I don't know if she will ever get there.

However in good news, DD can scoot! She has had a micro scooter for 2 years now and in January could not to anything beyond a small push. In the last two weeks she has managed to push forward (maybe jumping will come soon?) and she can steer! She doesn't just scoot into a wall. She can turn corners.
It feels like a massive achievement for her and proof that her brain is communicating better with her body and her motor planning is improving.

We are supposed to be going to robin on Friday, but I have double booked and will have to postpone (again this is the second time).

It is a long way there and last time we just talked which felt like a bit of a waste for 3.5 hours each way!

Hope everyone enjoys the sun :)

shoppingbagsundereyes · 13/07/2013 10:38

Princerogersnelson, I would book a Skype appointment. Robin only retested ds on the second appointment to check his progress with convergence. Thereafter it was just discussion that could be done just as well by Skype. So we've skyped ever since. Much easier than a 7 hour round trip.
Scooting is sooo much progress! Ds has only learned to scoot this year ( and NT dd too). Neither of my kids had the balance for it or the desire for speed. Ds now whizzes along at high speed and terrifies me. Jumping came late to ds too. I think he was your dd's age. Hopping is still tricky.

PrinceRogersNelson · 15/07/2013 20:57

I got a Skype appointment. Phew. I don't mind goibg again but at the moment life is so hectic and I am so exhausted I couldn't have faced that trip.

Lookslikerain · 16/07/2013 09:01

Prince, we've done 2 skypes and it works very well. We're too far away for regular trips!

I'm feeling a lot more positive this week than I was on Friday. I think DS has improved again, and again I think it's crept up on me! His speech has suddenly become really good. Long sentences, very clear, mini conversations. It's really noticeable and I am so pleased. Smile On Sunday, we were in the lift in M&S, and a lady asked him who his toy was (he was carrying a little chick, which he has pretty much carried everywhere since Easter!). He told her it was chick and then made a chirp chirp noise. It wasn't the language that was amazing, it was the fact he responded to her! Normally he just ignores people he doesn't know. Ok, 9 times out of 10 he would probably still ignore them, but he has to start somewhere.

I think because he is so far behind his peers, I'm expecting too much too quickly. The changes in him over the last 6 months are huge and must have taken a lot of brainpower so I need to stop expecting miracles overnight!

Prince, DS has started scooting too! He's not nearly as good as your DD. he can only go in a straight line and can't really stop, but he just didn't "get it" before and now he can coordinate his feet to make it go. I didn't think we needed a helmet yet as he was only using it inside. Then the other night, he scooted across the kitchen, right out the back door and fell over so maybe we do.

The sun has gone here now and it rained last night but it's so much more comfortable and the DC are sleeping better, thank goodness.

Ruggles · 16/07/2013 09:01

Hello everyone - haven't been on here for ages, but have been following everyone's news. The end of term was hectic and then we've been away for a week.

4th August - I'm really looking forward to it as I can't wait to meet you lot! Let's hope this weather continues.

Prince - I really felt for you when I read your recent posts. I know exactly what you mean as I have had a couple of periods when my head has spun with worrying about the gap between DS and other children and whether my head is in the sand. I don't know if this is any comfort to you, but always he manages to do something which surprises me and make me realise that we are making great progress. We've just been on holiday to a farm complex thing which we shared with 4 other families we hadn't met before. We had a few 'moments' and I noticed that one of the other mothers wasn't keen for DS to play with hers. DS was without a doubt the loudest and full on child but he was soooo much better than in the past. We couldn't have done a holiday like this before TH, it would have just been a nightmare for us and probably very stressful for him.

Are you coming on 4th? I'd love to have a proper natter about all of this.

brightstars · 16/07/2013 13:45

Hi there,
Shopping, thanks for the beach tips. We stayed over night in London to reduce the travel time on Saturday (5 hours round, with three girls as DH was away). In the event, most of England was on teh M3 and we missed our appointment by an hour and a half (and spent 9 hours in the car)!!!!
We ended up at a beach just down from Robin's called Exbury, a quiet stony little beach opp the Isle of Wight........just in case anyone wants a beach to visit.
Robin saw us later in the day. He has stopped eye tracking for DS as she really couldn't do it (she had managed just 4 stars in four weeks.....) and we are onto Hemi P and T. We have to keep going in person as he is testing he eyes still each time....We have also stopped tooth brushing - the first thing to be completed, hooray!

One question, DS hasn't been able to get to sleep for last month or so, which is very unusual for her. Wondered if this could be a side effect of Hemi exercises?
Enjoy holidays everyone, and your meet up. We are away for three weeks now seeing relative in the Algarve.

Ruggles · 17/07/2013 05:58

Brightstars - what a horrible journey! You poor thing. Were you on your own with the DCs? Great news about the teeth brushing.

Have written down the name of the beach as we're off to see Robin today. Really hope we have a better journey as DD has just been potty trained.. DD had about 2 weeks of trouble sleeping after we started TH with her. She wasn't unhappy, just took hours to go to sleep - lots of babbling and cooing. One night she did this for about 4 hours after going to bed Hmm. She slowly got back to normal, but does sometimes take a while... I'm sure it was the exercises and her excitement at starting to babble. Have you tried putting some Epsom salts in her bath?

Ruggles · 17/07/2013 05:58

PS - green with envy about your holiday, have a great time!

Lookslikerain · 17/07/2013 09:13

Quick question about going on holiday.

What do you do about multi vits? We are going abroad and I don't fancy carrying the heavy bottles with me. Plus they need to go in the fridge and I won't have one. I bought a small bottle of the ones the nhs recommends for pre-5 year olds here, then realised they contain something that is associated with a chemical that is known to cause cancer in animals! Shock Won't be giving him that!

We'll keep up with the diet and omegas but exercises might be a bit problematic.

brightstars · 17/07/2013 11:23

Ahh, thanks Ruggles. Yes DH was on stag weekend. All kids feel asleep in car on way home, we arrived at 9pm, I was totally shattered and they were raring to go. We all went to bed together, and I am sure I fell asleep first!! Have told DH he has to do the next visit!
DD been up til 11pm and midnight most nights this week, all exhausted, plus becoming a bit self fulfilling, now she worries about going to sleep. She's 9 so mainly showers, was dreaming about large doses of valerian, but will ride it out for now!
Turns out, UK currently hotter than Algarve, so packing cardis and looking forward to cooler nights, how ironic.
Take care all.

shoppingbagsundereyes · 18/07/2013 15:54

Brightstars what a grim journey. Amazed you all stayed sane through that. Hope your air con was working. I once did a ten hour drive from Birmingham to Devon due to getting stuck near Bristol for four hours in my little old Peugeot 205 with a sun roof but no air con. One of the worst days ever. Good news about dd's progress.

Lookslikerain
Re holidays. I think there will be enough of the vitamins built up in his system for it to be ok to leave them for a holiday. We don't do them at all to no ill effect ( although I'm not brave enough to tell Robin that!)

shoppingbagsundereyes · 18/07/2013 15:54

Ruggles, hope it went well yesterday
