MMR Booster ???

My kids had the separate jabs as i was worried about the possible link reported between the mmr and autism as it turned out, they are both autistic anyway!

the gp has said that the boys need their boosters and that the seperate ones are not available any more (unless we travel to france, which we couldnt afford!) so they should have the mmr booster and he said --

"I don't believe there is a link between the mmr and autism, but even if there was you might as well let your children have the booster because (here he laughed a little, a 'chorkle'!) its not as though it could make them any more autistic, and it will ensure their protection"

so since i withheld the mmr pointlessly should i just let them have the booster? i felt ever so upset when he said it couldnt make them any more autistic (i dont know why that upset me, it just seemed so cruel) but i guess he's right. Is he?

the link between mmr and autism has been well and truely trashed MTPW, it would be far worse if one of your kids was one of the one in a thousand fatalities, or worse, passed it to someone who's parents were responsible and had the vac and they died.

vacination will only work if there's a 95% take-up as it's still possible to catch the illnesses even if your vaccinated. your putting other peoples kids at risk not doing it.

Well done for not smacking DR on the nose. my son was doing everything, talking ect, until he had the MMR, when he suddenly lost... speech, eye contact, interest in surroundings, i do believe he became autistic. He has NOT had the booster because i do not want to take the risk of another regression.

thank you for replying eve2005. can i just point out that i am a responsible parent also. As my original post says, they didnt have the mmr - they had the seperate injections. these are the ones you have to pay for privately. so i did in point of fact ensure that they were protected. Just to clarify that point.

my reason for paying for the single injections was to bypass possible risk of autism. that turned out to be irrelevent as they both were later diagnosed with autism despite having the single jabs instead of the mmr.

The question was, they need their boosters. single injection boosters are apparently not available. the doctor says since the boys are autistic anyway, the mmr booster, even if it WAS the cause of autism, wouldnt make them MORE autistic.

There are still many people who are firmly convinced that the mmr is one of the triggers for autism btw.

My question further clarified - is the doctor right that mmr booster will not make any difference in an autistic child.

that's what worries me, going backwards. the boys have fought so hard to acheive what they have!

Isn't there a blood test that can be done to check to see if they actually need a booster? I've heard that the booster is only there to catch the 10% or so who didn't get immunity the first time around but I'm no expert.

at the doctor's attitude too!

most of the parents that i know who have a child with ASD have not had the booster, so i can't really say if there is a risk of regression.

MTPW, I find this physician's comments extremely unprofessional. Laughing at someone's autism. That's just incredibly unprofessional. So is poo-pooing a parent's concerns in such a manner.

You don't need to justify your decision to anyone, MTPW. As the mother of a child who was possibly damaged by mercury-containing infant vaccines, I can see where you are coming from.

I'm in the same dilema, so can't really help much. My ds is showing a lot of autistic tendancies, has been assessed and is likely to be dx autistic next month. He hasn't had the mmr at all as I was worried about him even back then, even tho I was happy to give it to my dd (nt). Now I don't nwo what to do, whether to let him have it, or is he at risk of becming worse?

I've heard of a blood test, bt I have no idea how you would get it done.

FWIW ds1 (ASD) had the MMR booster with no side-effects or regression but obviously you wouldn't want to make a decision like this based on that.

The singles are still around Privately though surely? I intend to get dd seperate jabs in a few months so i really hope so, the company we use is still doing them! (Though they are TERRIBLE!!!!!!)

DD1 has the blood test to check immunity for everything before she even had the DTP booster. Suprisingly and sadly she wasn' immune to ANYTHING exept polio and then just 2 strains of it. Anyway, you can get that done and it really wasn't that traumatic for her. (Though i don't know how your boys would take it)

We all have to look after our own children to, not just 'society'. Mytwopenceworth is not iresponsible or she wouldn't have got the singles or bothered posting! How black and white can you get?!!

I agree with coppertop, the booster is given to protect the children that didn't recieve the initial MMR vaccine. So with that in mind I didn't take my autistic ds to have his booster, there is no way I'm going to even remotely chance his autism getting worse by having the booster.

I took DS for his MMR booster 1 week before he was DX as autistic. I don't think he did regress, but what was I thinking of?

I don't like your GP's comment either. It is cruel

My ds had single vaccines but I've been ignoring reminders for his boosters for a couple of years now. Even the tiniest risk of him regressing is just too much to bear. I would be crushed if a Dr had dismissed my fears in such an offhand way .

My DS2 is ASD and had the single jabs (ironically because I was more concerned about MMR's links to bowel problems, not the autism...). He's due his MMR booster now but I've decided to hold back a couple of years and then do another course of single jabs. Not sure about where to get a blood test done to see if he will need all 3 again, but I thought that the protection from a single jab only lasted a while, 10 years or something? Can anyone help more accurately on this??

I've not heard that they aren't available (we went to a private place near London) although they did have a delay getting the Mumps one in, shortage of that.

And I think your GP was thoughtless, to say the least, MTPW!! :(

the point of vacination is to eliminate the disease from the population as a whole, the only way this will work and the disease will be eradicated is if 95%< of the population are immune, otherwise we're all still at risk. no vacine gives 100% protection to an individual person, but if we all get them the disease no longer exists and no-one would need them.

if some paper had printed an article claiming it was spagetti that gave your kids autism, would you all be on here saying... actually my kid had spagetti and now he has autism so it must be true?

the individual injections have actually got more risks attached to them than the mmr, thats why most docs won't give them now.

IMO Doctors won't give them because they aren't supposed to as we're all supposed to do what we're told as soon as we give Birth. Also Doctors get cash bonuses for the children immunised don't they?

FWIW, I don't think the MMR was necessarily responsible for the increase in autism cases. I DO think that mercury-containing DTP jab they were giving to two month old infants to save them a buck (literally) are, however.

I will never ever trust them again.

My daughter is delayed. On everything. No genetic or medical cause. Just seemed to have appeared out of nowhere, I guess.

Of course, no one seems interested in finding out why.

They lie and they don't care. It's not their child.

Slightly off topic but the mention of mercury made me think of it. I went in the Chemist this morning and was chatting to the woman behind the counter about this and that. We were the only two people in there and I was waiting for the pharmacist to fill my prescription in the back room. Right in front of me on the counter was a display of Omega 3 oils that I'd never heard of before so I said "oh that's new. Mind you I've read on the internet (!) that some of those fish oils have mercury in them, I don't know if it's true". Quick as a flash she scurried out the back and came back saying "Mercury is a POISON, they wouldn't give you that!". "Oh" said I, "Is that why they've been putting it in vaccines then?" She looked blankly at me so I said that mercury has been used as a preservative in vaccines for years. She just shrugged her shoulders, laughed and said "We never know what they're giving us nowadays do we?"

I tell you, I was speechless. Wonder what planet she's been living on all this time?
