Tinsley House Support Thread

IndigoBell · 16/02/2012 01:55

An awful lot of us are now doing Tinsley House, either by going there, or by following the recommendations in The Brain Food Plan

So this is just a general support (and hopefully good news) thread.

Stage 1 of the TH therapy consists of:

  1. Multivitamins
  1. Healthy eating diet
  • High protein, low sugar, no artificial sweeteners, additives etc.
  1. Specific exercises done 3 times a day

Oh dear Indigo, I'm sorry. I guess improvement never happens in a straight line and there are bound to be backward steps at times. But none of thatis probably any help right now.

crazygal · 22/02/2012 18:57

oh sorry to hear theat indiogo,:(
my ds done the same today,to a girl!!
its heartbreaking!!

but you know, you have done so much and have come so far!
your an inspiration x

nightcat · 22/02/2012 21:57

Hi Indigo, sorry to hear about the blip :( fingers crossed it's a one off
Can I ask you, do you know whether TH audio therapy is the same sort as The Listening Program or AIT? I am considering it..

whojamaflip · 22/02/2012 22:11

Ds was in bother at school as well today for trying to wrap a chair round one of his classmate's heads Sad. Thankfully his TA intervened before he got completely out of hand. He managed to tell us later that the other boy had taken a book he wanted and wouldn't share so ds "reacted". He has come so far with his speech that I tend to forget that he still has moments when the speech deserts him and he lashes out through pure frustration.

wondering if its a kind of stress reaction to returning to school - either that or the weather is affecting all the dcs who are following TH!

HolyCalamityJane · 23/02/2012 12:15

Sorry to hear that Indigo. We will always have blips but I know how soul destroying it is after all the hard work you have put in.
Thanks for the wobbleboard tips everyone might just invest in one today any good ones online how much should I be paying for one of these.

Oh and thought it would be a good idea to compare sites for the floradix so that we can all ensure we get it for a reasonable price. I need to order again today. The last place I got it from was
yourhealthfoodstore.co.uk The magnesium one was £9.95 and the Kindervital £8.52.

Any better prices out there????

IndigoBell · 23/02/2012 13:45

Thanks everyone.

Feeling better now. This just shows me how much further we have to go - I know we haven't started to cure this stuff yet. This stuff is controlled by the prefrontal cortex which is the last part of the brain TH addresses.

And when he's better I'll be able to look back to yesterday and realise how far he's come.

School are being really good. Just treating it like a minor blip and another opportunity to talk to him about 'making good choices' :)

DS was unlucky that the boy he kicked already had a sprained ankle (which is why he didn't run away fast enough :) ) and so the injury was worse.

The other boys admitted provoking him, and they'll both be punished.

I will cure DS. This just highlights that 95% improvement is not good enough. There's every reason to believ TH can achieve miracles. It is absolutely changing DS and DDs brain.

Holy I got mine from TKMaxx too, it wasn't expensive, only about £7 or £8 (I can't remember exactly). They (and the wobble cushions) are in the ladies' yoga/fitness section in store.

HolyCalamityJane · 23/02/2012 18:31

bdaonion I use the barleans ultra as well I squeeze the liquid from the capsule combine it with 10ml of the floradix multivitamin and 10ml of the zinc and magnesium supplement with a little apple and raspberry fresh juice. I tell DD it is her "brain juice" and she knocks it back every morning no probs she actually says it's deliciousGrin

skewiff · 23/02/2012 20:39

I'm sorry to hear about what happened Indigo. It made me think - all the old stuff is still ticking away underneath.

So my feeling then that the vitamins etc are just keeping all the old stuff at bay - is right ... if you miss a day it all comes back ...

But TH is trying to get rid of it all forever? Is this done just by their exercises? Or is it the computer programme as well? Or something else?

IndigoBell · 23/02/2012 20:51

I don't think the old stuff is being kept at bay, I think it takes a few months to change the brain.

I think the major thing that changes the brain is the exercises. And the first exercise is for the cerebellum, which is involved in controlling the body - ie gross motor skills. DSs gross motor skills have definately improved. I can't see his dyspraxia symptoms coming back - or his vision problems.

However the lack of empathy and anger and social and emotional stuff is controlled by the prefrontal cortex, not the cerebellum, and he hasn't done the exercise for that yet.

However DS did handle yesterday's incident better than he has previously. Not at the time, but later when he had to tell the teacher about it. And he showed a tiny bit of empathy towards the other boy.

But when we finish TH he will have proper normal empathy and social skills. TH will get rid of his ASD symptoms forever because it's actually addressing the problem in the brain that is causing the symptoms.

The computer program just cured his vision problems, nothing else.

OK Indigo - thank you.

I suppose I was meaning that vitamins must be keeping my DS's behaviour at bay, as I'm not doing those exercises (yet).

We are doing the RRT exercises though.

I love the way you talk about curing your DS. I secretly believe that I can cure my DS, but always make a joke out of it as I think other people think I'm ridiculous. So its very refreshing to hear you being so positive and full of hope.

bochead · 24/02/2012 23:29

Rites of passage for NT kids the bochead way Wink

I'm not minimising what happened with your DS BUT - it's kinda a well known wives tale that most NT kids get into playground fights/are rude to teachers etc in the last 1/2 of year 6. For a short while they are at the top of the playground social tree. Then the little blighters get all their ishoos and tantrums shocked out of them angels on entering "big school" in year 7. You then get a bit of respite for a couple of years until puberty hits - and your loving child is lost to the abyss known as adolescence, before emerging like a butterfly into balanced adults sometime in their 20's.

So don't count one or two isolated incidents as a total failure. Don't put it all down to his special needs either - give him the same degree of sanction you would if he were NT.

Do ensure any strategies he has in place for school re anger and stress aren't being forgotten cos peeps are getting complacent now he's improved by having a quiet word with them when you get the chance. The run up to SATS means teaching staff can sometimes develop a bit of tunnel vision as the pressure to get the kids to perform well comes at them from all sides.

IndigoBell · 25/02/2012 06:19

Thanks Bochead. I think you're right.

After sleeping on it I think school reacted in a typical 'cotton wool' manor (which they have to).

I know damn well if this had happened at scouts, I wouldn't have even been told about it.

This was just boys mucking around and getting physical. Perfectly normal thing for 11 year old boys to do.

DDs making good progress.

She now goes to French! Which she couldn't do at the beginning of the year because she couldn't learn French by listening (due to her auditory memory problems), nor could she read, so there was no way she could participate.

So staying in for French is quite a big step forward.

She also got a HT award this week - for 'being inquisitive' - ie asking lots of questions in class. But the fact that she used the word inquisitive blew me away. School are obviously noticing a big improvement in how she is in class to giver her an award (they're not given out like candy)

She also does spelling tests now! At the beginning of the year she was excused from them, because she just had no memory at all, so wasn't even able to learn the easiest of spelling lists.

But a few weeks ago she asked if she could do the spelling test, and she now brings home the same list as the bottom table - and learns it one go the night before the test!!!!!!!!!!!

So huge memory improvements for her. And huge improvements in her involvement in class.

Hi guys.

Well, I have failed, FAILED at giving up MN for lent Blush

Oh dear.

Anyway, wanted to share that ds1 is doing so well Smile

Dh is away atm (other side of the world) and he is coping so well Smile Was really worried as before he has not coped at all well (not sleeping, huge anxiety, change of routine etc) and the change is just so noticeable!!!

Also, he came home very proud to tell me he had been awarded 3 house points (which is odd as normally they only get 1 if they do something good) He told me that his teacher gave him 3 because he was the only child asking questions about their project topic Smile

This is great on 3 levels;

  1. He is telling me about stuff at school
  2. He is proud of his achievement
  3. He is more confident in his abilities

Going back to TH next week and cant wait to get started on the vision therapy...if we can sort out his optical tracking/convergence issues he will be able to read!!!!

He is struggling with the backwards stair exercise atm but its early days...

Becaroooo · 25/02/2012 08:55

Oh!!!

And he read 3 pages of a.......chapter book!!!

HolyCalamityJane · 25/02/2012 09:56

Beca That sounds fantastic well done Mini Roooooooo!
My DD was well behaved all week in school except on Thursday. She has been wetting herself more than usual and it caused a bit of a row.

Does anyone think there is a link to the supplements we are giving and this? Just a thought Hmm We are going to GP next Monday to get referred to urologist as DD has never had any control over her bladder.

I managed a small lie in this morning and when I got up DD was bouncing off the walls. I asked DH "what have you given her" He said "It was only a small bowl of rice krispies!!!! She wanted them what could I do Angry"

I suspect that will be the end of my lie ins!!! More Floradix has arrived by post this morning we are going through 4 bottles a month but I still think it is so worth it.

Becaroooo · 25/02/2012 10:55

Oh its maddening isnt it?

My MIL has been giving ds1 stuff he shouldnt have....sigh. They feel we are "denying" him food he likes.

No, MIL we are trying to prevent invasive tests and long term bowel meds Hmm

Ds1 is happy to take tablets now so am going to swtich to supplements in tablet form...cheaper too!

popgoestheweezel · 27/02/2012 10:55

Beca- sounds like great progress there for mini roo.
Indigo- sorry to hear your ds had a blip, but I'm sure it was just that. I know it can feel cripplingly depressing when these blips do occur but we've all got to remember to keep the big picture at the forefront of our minds (sometimes not as easy as it sounds). Glad your dd continues to make great progress.
We will all get there- it's just going to take time and bucket loads of perseverance!
I am certainly noticing more good days with ds but we are still having plenty of bad ones too. It was a bad day at school on Thursday. At playtime he grabbed another boy round the neck and strangled him Sad. The teacher had to have a word with me at pick up.
However, on Friday I got a thumbs up from her when I collected him. He walked home without any tears or tantrums (despite dd being irritating in the way big sisters are). We had a lovely evening with him- so calm and happy. On saturday he had his only best friend over and they played brilliantly in the garden all day long. Sunday was fab too- he was so good at Sunday lunch my G'ma asked if he was OK as he was so quiet Shock he was just like an average child- quite frankly AMAZING. Shock but Smile
This morning though, he was stressed and grumpy and refused to get dressed, got giddy and was generally a pain. Oh well!
Still, only a week till we go back to TH and move on to the second stage of things. As always looking forward to (hopefully) seeing more progress, but a little nervous that ds won't cooperate. Probably I needn't worry as he has been AMAZING with doing his stair exercises (something I thought would be a massive challenge). I have an alarm on my phone and he tells me it's time for exercises when it goes off!

DaftMaul · 27/02/2012 16:31

Hello everyone, we are starting out on the TH road as well having recently visited the clinic.

Just going through the process of buying and ordering all the supplements! I stood in Boots trying to read labels (a bit tricky with my dodgy old eyes these days!). I was all rather mind boggling.

DS has been doing his exercises so far without too much trouble. He finds the test cleaning one quite tricky and hates cleaning his test anyway. I'm hoping it will have a good effect on his teeth though.

I am reading all your reported improvements with delight. The odd blip, guess, is to be expected.
