Tinsley House Support Thread

An awful lot of us are now doing Tinsley House, either by going there, or by following the recommendations in The Brain Food Plan

So this is just a general support (and hopefully good news) thread.

Stage 1 of the TH therapy consists of:

  1. Multivitamins
  1. Healthy eating diet
  • High protein, low sugar, no artificial sweeteners, additives etc.
  1. Specific exercises done 3 times a day

AT - does your child only eat carbs?

My DC didn't have particular food issues, so I might be wrong - but I think it all works together.

ie the multivitamins, diet and exercises all help the brain (cerebellum). So if you just start with the multivitamins and exercises, her brain will start to improve. As her brain improves she'll be more open to trying new foods.....

And it all works together. She is craving soley carbs because her cerebellum isn't mature enough to know she needs a balanced diet.

what are the vits that you have to take care not to exceed? Is it vit A?

IndigoBell · 16/02/2012 14:38

I think it's vitamin A - if you're pregnant.

blueShark · 16/02/2012 16:39

Too much vitamins is not good, so be careful all with the doses, although you have to really overdo it to get complication, google vitamin overdose. However the level that insley house recommends is within limits.

indigo, I know the stairs exercise can be done with supporting the child initially as some children cannot do the backwards walk and do you know if t here is still effect while supporting them?

blueShark · 16/02/2012 17:16

Posted the above too quick and don't want to alarm people but please be mindful what you administer and how much. Our kids or brain food starved kids would need more than other kids and I have doubled the omega dose in the beginning but be wary of the Fat soluble vitamins a,d,e and k as their excess is stored in the liver. B and c and water soluble and should be replaced daily if the child is deficient.

From research b vitamins ESP 6 and 12 as well as omegas are brain food and the magnesium and zinc are the brain minerals so the tinselly house advises on a good supplements balance.

crazygal · 16/02/2012 17:35

Hi all

Ds1 (8.5) went to TH at end of Dec and we have been supplementing with;
Eye Q omega oil (Boots 3 for 2)
Floradix kindervital and
Floradix saludynam (both from amazon - cheapest around)

He has also been doing the stair exercise since then and is up to 10 reps now.

He ate a pretty good diet in some ways before TH i.e. no choc/sweets/fizzy drink/squash BUT like so many of our kids he craved carbs (which Robin says is vidence their brains are not functioning optimally) and his diet was very carb heavy.

He now has eggs and beans for protein breakfasts and veg each day with his main meal. He will only have fruit puree though (he will not/cannot eat whole fruit) He is also now eating fromage frais and jacket potatoes and skins! Have started buying much better quality meat/fruit and veg (organic when I can get it). A typical day for him would be;

Bfast; Cup of warm milk/Beans on wholemeal toast/fruit puree
Lunch: School - he takes a wholemeal sandwich (with butter on!!), fruit puree and a home made oaty cookie/flapjack
Dinner: Veg, potatoes and chicken breast in breadcrumbs.
Snacks: fromage frais/rice cakes/plain popcorn
Drinks: water

Ds1 is dyslexic (dx) and has asd (undx)

We are going back in march to - hopefully - start the vision therapy.

Am v hopeful :)

crazygal · 16/02/2012 22:11

hi becaroooo....
have you seen any improvement in your ds1 since attending TH?
is there many exercises to do?
his diet sounds good,did/does he take to it ok?and the exercises?

Becaroooo · 16/02/2012 22:35

Hi crazygal

I knew ds1 would find the diet bit hard (as he finds any change hard) but actually he has been a star - trying lots of different foods too which has always been an issue.

He takes the supplements with little or no complaint too.

At TH when Robin was showing us the stair exercise I was really worried as he couldnt really do it! But after 3 days at home he was so much better...you start off with 3 reps and work up to 10, then backwards!!!

All in all its not been as hard as I thought, but we havent started the vision therapy yet......

Wrt ds1's behaviour its hard to gauge..we have never really had issues with "bad" behaviour per se (at school or at home) but his anxiety isnt as bad and I think that his OCDish behaviours are getting better.

He has also gone up 3 reading levels since he went back to school on 9th Jan!!!!

IndigoBell · 17/02/2012 06:49

You Tube Clips

Becarooo - He has also gone up 3 reading levels since he went back to school on 9th Jan!!!! - Congrats little rooo. That is huge progress!

The vision therapy isn't that bad. The kids complained a lot for a few days, and then less after that. It took DD 30 days to complete it, and DS 40. It only takes 20 mins a day.

OP posts:
Becaroooo · 17/02/2012 08:32

Yeah, I think after some complaint he will be fine with it indigo

Just want to get back to TH now!!!! Smile

jalapeno · 17/02/2012 08:33

He has also gone up 3 reading levels since he went back to school on 9th Jan!!!! That's amazing progress! Well done!

Your DS1's diet sounds do-able for my DS1 too except the fromage frais and eggs and beans so I'm going to copy it heavily but keep weetabix (well, try oatibix) for breakfast with a sausage. I served beans with tea yesterday and DS2 lapped them up but DS1 was gagging. To his credit he tried them though and as with so many other things (rice, roast potatoes) he hated them but after a few weeks of trying a mouthful every few days he stops moaning quite so much then eventually seems to enjoy the food.

We also use the Equazen eye-q liquid, did TH say that was ok?

jalapeno · 17/02/2012 08:35

How long is the waiting list for TH? Robin is calling us next week just wondered how long on average it takes to get the initial appointment? Or in other words, how long to I have to try to sell the contents of my loft do I can pay for it? Grin

IndigoBell · 17/02/2012 08:39

TH recommends vegepa because it has no DHA in it. (and no artificial sweeteners) He believes the DHA reduces the effectiveness of the EPA.

Robin based that advice on a uni prof who has done a metastudy of omega studies - ie he has looked at all the thousands of studies that have been done on the effectiveness of omega, and he found that the studies that were most effective were the ones with high EPA.

Also the body can convert EPA to DHA - but not the otherway round.

OP posts:
Becaroooo · 17/02/2012 08:40

Thats what I use too jalapeno I checked out the EPA/DHA content and its very similar to the vegepa that Robin recommends (but cheaper and easier to source) Its on permanent 3 for 2 at Boots.

I get the other 2 supplements from amazon - cheapest I have found.

I am pleased with ds1's diet now...compared to lots of kids his age it is pretty good IMO. Ds1 also wasnt keen on beans to begin with. He wont eat sausages (but neither do I) or bacon which is a pain. He eats chicken and fish if its in breadcrumbs - not ideal but I buy very good quality ones which arent processed and have no e numbers/preservatives in.

Make sure the sausages are at least 85% meat btw!

Luckily for me ds1 likes lots of healthy snacks like rice cakes and plain popcorn Smile He hasnt had crisps since end of Dec (took them every day to school in his packed lunch) and has not missed them...not even mentioned it!!!!!

Good luck!

IndigoBell · 17/02/2012 08:41

So far he's been able to see everyone very quickly.

The first appt costs £250. Then you go back in 8 weeks and the 2nd appt is £300. Then after that you go back (or skype) every 8 weeks and the cost is £75.

Most kids need 6-8 appts.

Becaroooo · 17/02/2012 08:45

I was seen within a week

jalapeno · 17/02/2012 08:47

We've got a popcorn maker similar in style to this one: www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?q=popcorn+maker&hl=en&rlz=1C1AFAB_enGB460GB460&prmd=imvnsr&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&ix=seb&ion=1&biw=1280&bih=629&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=7688384964189925959&sa=X&ei=fhM-T4HlBafE0QWzxpGsDw&ved=0CHIQ8wIwAQ

It is fab! I've bought loads of corn to pop to take in for lunches and some of the organix rice cakes and oaty snack bars too for him to take in.

Thanks Smile and thanks Indigo, I hope it's quick now! Smile

Becaroooo · 17/02/2012 08:53

Its v v exciting isnt it??? Smile

HolyCalamityJane · 17/02/2012 10:20

Blueshark I ordered the Barleans Ultra EPA after reading a previous post of yours. DD is 5 should I just be giving her one of the capsules do you think?

blueShark · 17/02/2012 15:50

Always start with lower dose and gradually build it up to the recommended dose, that's what I do with all supplements. And keep a diary for at least the first week of behaviour in case unexpected changes happen.

Holy one capsule is fine for the first week then try 2 as recommended and monitor changes, if needed reverse back to one.

razumov · 17/02/2012 16:16

Is the chair one where they spin around in a swivel chair and say 'boo!' or am I mixing it up with Out of Sync?

PurplePidjin · 17/02/2012 16:28

Thank you for this thread, I've emailed SIL the link (it's up to her what she does with the information)

Tinsley House is actually very near me, so if anyone wants extra support while you're here or recommendation of nearest Travel Lodge, parks with fences, stuff to do then feel free to ask Grin
