Tinsley House Support Thread

IndigoBell · 16/02/2012 01:55

An awful lot of us are now doing Tinsley House, either by going there, or by following the recommendations in The Brain Food Plan

So this is just a general support (and hopefully good news) thread.

Stage 1 of the TH therapy consists of:

  1. Multivitamins
  1. Healthy eating diet
  • High protein, low sugar, no artificial sweeteners, additives etc.
  1. Specific exercises done 3 times a day

Thanks Indigo and Shopping for your comments. Definately think I will take DS to a nutritionist. He never drank milk as a baby and I have always suspected a dairy issue. Not sure what the difference is between a sacrocranial and cranial oesteopath but have spoken to Robin who thinks he doesn't need it. Feel so encouraged by all your success stories. Have considered moving DS to Independent School but he doesn't want to change and he has the same teacher this year who at least he knows. Will keep a close eye and see how he copes as his brain starts to improve. Feel so fortunate to have found both TH and you guys so early on in my search for help.

Ds1 stood up in church today and read a prayer with another child!

Fabulous Badvoc :)

Beautifulpossum · 10/09/2012 13:48

DS is 6 weeks into the TH programme now and on the whole things are better. Still worried about him coping at school with classmates. Went to a party at the weekend and really noticed how he was becoming isolated due to silly behaviour. I wondered if any of you who have DC's with behavioural issues know how long it takes to get noticeable changes. Also wondered how long others hve done stairs and teeth and if that stops when you move on to Where's Wally?

shoppingbagsundereyes · 10/09/2012 13:58

We are still on stairs and teeth after 3 months. He is so sturdy and controlled on the stairs now though, compared to 3 months ago. I haven't seen any change to the behaviour that makes ds different from his peers yet tbh. He no longer flaps when excited actually so that is a pretty significant change. But he is still irritating to his peers and still unsure when a game is no longer fun eg they play chase but I can tell his friends are about to explode, they are so sick of him chasing them but he is still giggling and enjoying the game.
The best change we have seen so far is his ability to concentrate on subjects that are not of particular interest to him (tends to overfocus on stuff he likes).
Ds is 6 btw

IndigoBell · 10/09/2012 15:56

Stairs stop when you can do them with a tray perfectly.

Took my DCs 4 months, but I know it takes some a lot longer (mine had already done a lot of retained reflex therapy before TH, I think that's why they made faster progress at the beginning)

But you do the vision therapy or the where's wally stuff in conjunction with the stairs if necessary. Normally you start with vision therapy, and do that for 4 months before you get to where's wally.

OMG!
Ds1 just got home from school and he has got another times tables certificate! He is on Gold now!
His teacher has also heard him read and has put in his reading record that he can move up levels when he wants to as he is reading so well.
I could cry...........
:)

IndigoBell · 10/09/2012 16:06

Badvoc - that is fantastic news. I'm so pleased for you and DS1.

Well done little Badvoc!

Good day here, DS came out of school actually smiling today and says yr 2 is much better than year 1. Meeting with teacher on Wednesday and intend to explain the plan to her ( not sure how she will react) Hope she will keep him boosted up with stickers etc. to get us through the next few months. DD said today that her brain was clearing( she has ADD and mild dyslexia)... so pleased.

IndigoBell · 11/09/2012 03:04

Wow! Sounds like both your children are making great progress.

So pleased for you.

Thanks Indigo! Just wondered if anyone gives their DC a break when they are finding it difficult to cope with exercises? So far I have made mine stick to them but some days they are just exhausted by it. DS gets really upset about teeth in the evening.

Have ordered minerals recommended by Foresight and will add those in. Just hope it isn't overdoing it.

DS was amazingly calm last night...fingers crossed it will continue.

Wondered what happens to behaviour when new exercises or VT start?

shoppingbagsundereyes · 11/09/2012 14:20

no breaks. I am merciless. I figure that every time I give him a day off it is a day longer before he is better. Poor boy, we've had a couple of days when he's screaming and banging the computer keyboard because he doesn't want to do it but I make him anyway. I just try to come up with a better offer the next day (currently I am bribing with chocolate buttons which I know isn't ideal but it's only a few a day and it gets the vision therapy done pain-free)

Beautifulpossum · 11/09/2012 19:45

Tough evening tonight... DS totally stressed out by school and exercises. Still, hope for better things tomorrow. They have brownies and beavers tomorrow so there will be squash and biscuits... argh!

I am having to bribe DS just to do stairs and teeth in the evenings. Robin gave us VT at first appointment but we just couldn't manage it. Plan to start after first follow up. Shopping, did you start VT straight away or after first follow up? Wonder if I am just weak or my DS is worse than others?

IndigoBell · 11/09/2012 20:36

Wonder if I am just weak or my DS is worse than others?

Neither!!!!!!

It's easy for Robin to prescribe this stuff, it's really hard to do it.

I think we've all struggled at times. Some more than others. But we've all struggled.

I can't get DS2 to do the stairs at all. And I'm not even trying to. Right now. It'll have to wait till I have far more energy.

We weren't given vt until the first follow up appointment. It is really difficult to fit everything in. At the moment ds wakes at 6.30, it takes me 15 mins to tent the cooked breakfast ready ( he will only have fish fingers or cheese on toast at the moment), then 30 mins of VT, then get dressed for school and a hurried set of steps as we have to leave at 8. Poor dd is largely ignored all morning and she is only 4.
Ds is resistant to anything new so it took some time to get him doing each new activity willingly, hence the bribery.
Re biscuits and squash,, I know Robin would say you should refuse to let them have it at brownies and I understand why but as parents we also have to be aware of helping our kids fit in socially. So ds has squash and biscuit when he goes to beavers but not at all the rest of the week (well, he has homemade oat cookies but they are low sugar, ,whole wheat etc so I consider them ok)

Badvoc · 12/09/2012 10:08

MY ds1 still has flapjacks as a treat. He inky drinks milk and water so no issue there really.
The first part of vt hard...it's over 20 mins and sme mornings I wanted to cry at the that of it!
But it doesnt stay that line forever and by the time you finish it will be down to 4 mins.
We are struggling to fit in apples and pears is his back at school, but we will find a way.
If any of yu are interested in my sons improvement since starting TH then my e mails to robin are in the TH website under feedback...
:)

Beautifulpossum · 12/09/2012 21:22

Lent DS's teacher Robin's book and she was very keen to read. She has a nephew who has just had dx dyspraxia and dyslexia Really feel that she will look out for DS and was very supportive about the programme. She is also going to liase with SENCO so hopefully he can get a bit of 1 to 1.

DS not stressed at all at pick up today and was running around with classmates. Also demonstrated stair exercise to his teacher which I think made him think it wasn't completely crazy. ( He has been saying that the exercises are mad/ don't help/ mummy and Robin are mad etc etc...)

Also coped well at beavers ( did not put hands over ears when noise levels were high and didn't seem stressed. :)

VinoEsmeralda · 12/09/2012 22:25

Just finished reading the book, your thread and ordered the multivitamins plus big shop with lots of delicious low sugar food and high protein. dD doesn't eat fish though, only fish fingers but will try few new recipes..

Ready to start this for 8 weeks and if see improvement will go to TH.

Thank you for starting this thread, onwards and upwards for us!

IndigoBell · 12/09/2012 23:02

Vino - are you going to do the stairs exercise as well?

Good luck with it all. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Possom - so pleased your DS is doing well. And great that you gave his teacher the book. I gave it to the HT and the SENCO and DS and DDs teacher - and because of that managed to convince them to do the stairs exercise as an intervention.

Maybe in a few months, when your DS has improved even more, you'll be able to convince your school to do the same.

PM me if you want help with getting school to do it. (that goes for anyone - if all of our schools did the schools exercise think how many kids would be helped)

It's really helped the 10 kids school started with, and they're thrilled with it. Luckily my kids school has lots of stairs - because they're now doing the exercise with 40 kids :)

Hi Indigo, are you 10 months in now? I just wondered how long you think you have to go and what you hope/believe your final outcome will be with your DC?

Things are defintely changing here. Since starting TH DS

Anxiety has reduced
Sense of humour and fun have returned some of the time
only has occassional meltdowns ( usually related to evening teeth cleaning exercise)

IndigoBell · 13/09/2012 21:23

We started in Nov.

I think the final outcome will be a total cure for both DD (Dyslexia) and DS (Aspergers) - however I've done a lot more diet / nutrition stuff with them then just what Robin recommends.

For example they're both gluten free / dairy free. And they're on an awful lot of supplements. (Huge amounts of vitamin B, Bio Chelate, Candida stuff...)

We're going to see Dr Goyal next month. I'm so excited.

So, within the next year, between Robin and Dr Goyal, I expect both of them to be 100% cured.

DS has started high school this week without a single hitch.

2 years ago I thought I wouldn't be able to send him to high school, I thought I'd have to home educate him.

He has done unbelievably well. Managed a proper school uniform (tie and blazer) which he hates. Does all his hw. Organises himself for the next day. Joined after school clubs. Eats his lunch in the dinner hall.......

We started in jan.
In the words of his teacher..."heads a different child"
Yes he is, or rather the same child who is now fulfilling his potential.
