Tinsley House Support Thread

An awful lot of us are now doing Tinsley House, either by going there, or by following the recommendations in The Brain Food Plan

So this is just a general support (and hopefully good news) thread.

Stage 1 of the TH therapy consists of:

  1. Multivitamins
  1. Healthy eating diet
  • High protein, low sugar, no artificial sweeteners, additives etc.
  1. Specific exercises done 3 times a day

I don't tell family anything about it either tbh we are all following a better diet now so it's easy to say oh they don't drink squash but I have some fruit juice they can have. Also I try to be quite strict about the diet at home so that I can relax the rules a bit on occasions where they are somewhere else or at a party. As the book says they do have to have treats occasionally. The only thing I don't want to compromise on really is crappy squash's but it is very easy to take fresh juice or water anywhere as an alternative

Badvoc · 20/07/2012 11:32

My family just aren't that interested tbh....pils are more so so I tell them what I think they will understand iyswim? I don't go into too much detail as it would confuse them and I am not sure I explain it very well! :)
My family knows ds1 is doing a therapy but they never ask how it's going, never ask me what it's about.
Which is fine by me, actually.
Have been naughty wrt diet last week as we were on hols and ds1 had far too much pizza and fish and chips! So no pizza and chips for a week! He is not pleased :)
Going to see robin again on Sunday ( should have been a couple of weeks ago but ds1 was poorly)
Am wondering what the next stage will be for him?
Can I share something with you all?
I got ds1s work folder from school and he has written a poem about a tiger...he has decorated it with a border and drawing of a tiger:
"Bone cruncher
Deadly hunter
Deer slayer
Striped terror
Needle like claws
Meat scraper
Lightening runner
Creeping predator
Deadly fighter
Tree scratcher"
:)
Am taking it to show robin.
Tis time last year he wasn't even using vowels in his writing!!
Thank you...boasting now over! :)

Catsdontcare · 20/07/2012 12:33

That's fab Badvoc! Boast away!

We are doing well with the diet, although treats do keep creeping in here and there but I think it would be unrealistic to say no ice cream ever again! Although no squash has passed his lips for over 2 weeks now and we have managed to gradually water down the fruit juice. Not doing enough cooked breakfasts yet but thatt's my disorganisation with school runs and mornings. Now it is the school holidays mornings will be much more chilled out. Have banished all crappy cereals now so if he does have anything like that it is oatibix or porridge. He really loves both those so going to be hard pushed to cut them out!

We are now taking all the supplements, the vegepa arrived yesterday and ds will take it if it's mixed with peanut butter which is amazing as I've never been able to get fish oil supplements into him before.

Question though, the book says double dose on the fish oils for three months and the box say 2 to 4 capsules a day. Should I really make it 8 a day sounds like an awful lot?!

Although we've been making changes over the last two weeks I don't feel I can say we've properly started until today as we are now on all the supplements, doing the excercises and following the diet. Will be interested to see where we are by the end of the holidays.

Badvoc · 20/07/2012 12:55

I have only ever given ds1 2 caps per day cats He has been on them since jan. Partially because its a long term thing - he will be on them for a good while - and partially because of cost!!! :)

I get mine from amazon...it works out at approx £10 per month. I also get the floradix from there which costs me £20 per month.

I honetly dont know wrt to the supplmements...for my ds the main things that seem to have helped are the diet - his bowels are greatly improved! - and the exercises and VT.

But, of course, the supplments could be helping immensely...I wouldnt know unless I take him off them and I darent do that!!

Some MNers have noticed HUGE changes in their dc after supplmentation but I think as we are doing other things too (exerices, diet etc) its far harder to measure the success of the supplementation....

iyswim?

IndigoBell · 20/07/2012 13:16

Cats - I think 4 is the double dose and 2 is the normal dose.

Badvoc - amazing poem. Well done DS.

My 2 have been doing the new exercises for 2 weeks now and they are finding them easier and complaining less. They both found them very hard to start with.

Staying in the routine over summer will be my next challenge......

How old is he badvoc? Such a clever poem Smile I would have been very pleased to read that from one of my year 8 grammar school boys

shoppingbagsundereyes · 20/07/2012 14:10

Ds has 4 capsules a day. We plan to go down to 2 a day when we've done 3 months. I am certain the loss of flapping is linked with the omega 3. Ds without flapping is taking me a while to get used to, feels like my quirky baby is growing up. Will not be sad to lose some of his other quirks though, that's for sure

Badvoc · 20/07/2012 14:17

He is Year 4 shopping He starts Year 5 in Sept. Thank you :) Thats really cheered me up!

Ds1 has been on 2 caps per day now for nearly 7 months. I think I did do 4 caps for about 2 weeks (?) cant remember now but it went down to 2 after that.

Badvoc · 20/07/2012 14:21

Am so proud of ds1 :) I really am.

He is so much happier/better off/less anxious/ since TH.

He goes to bed now on his own and sleeps all night We have never had that. Never. And he is now 9 :(

He eats better, he has put weight on - for the 1st time he is "average" on the height and weight charts!!!

I really hope you guys see the kind of improvement I have with ds1 over the summer....keep the faith xx

Catsdontcare · 20/07/2012 14:27

Thanks 8 capsules sounded rather excessive!
It's hard to say if the diet has changed much as ds is a fairly passive chap I do think he is more focused when we do speech therapy though. Also he fashioned himself a divers outfit out of goggles, sausage shaped balloon and a toy stethoscope this week which I thought was rather creative!

IndigoBell · 23/07/2012 18:23

Hope you guys appreciate how amazing this is..

DS just chose a library book for himself. Yep. He made a decision.

He's never done that before. He reads 2 or 3 books a week - but I have to choose them for him because, up until now, he has not been capable of making a decision.

I mean he knows if he's read book 1 then he needs to read book 2 next. But he's never been able to go to the library, with all that choice, and choose a new book that wasn't the next in a series.

I'm really thrilled :)

shoppingbagsundereyes · 23/07/2012 19:00

I appreciate it Smile choice sends ds into a Frenzy of indecision 'no!!! I didn't wAnt that one! Drive 200 miles back to legoland do I can choose the other one!'

shoppingbagsundereyes · 23/07/2012 19:00

So not do

Badvoc · 23/07/2012 19:02

:)

Badvoc · 30/07/2012 07:46

Hi everyone.
Saw robin yesterday and ds1 has finished the hts vt...he is very happy :)
Robin was so pleased with ds1s progress that he has asked me to write up a piece for his website!!!
So, ds1 s convergence is sorted, but the visiograph shows his eyes all over the place :( so we are doing a tracking programme.
For those of you following TH but not seeing robin you can find it here:
dyslexiainformation.co.uk
It's very inexpensive compared to some others.
So we start that today :)
Am feeling ok. Sad but ok. I really thought he was doing so well but the visiograph actually showed me the movements ds1s eyes make when reading....it wasn't good :(
So back in 2 months and we will see....

Badvoc · 30/07/2012 07:47

Oooops! Wrong link!
Should be
visionexercises.co.uk
Sorry! [ blush]

Badvoc · 30/07/2012 07:48

In my defence it's pretty early in the morning :)

DaftMaul · 30/07/2012 10:27

Hi Badvoc, sounds good!

That is the tracking programme that ds has also started. Although, having been away for two weeks, he has only done a couple of sessions so far.

After two weeks of sugar and all sorts of foods previously reduced from his diet, we are trying to get back on track at home. It was interesting to watch him doing his tracking programme last night - he bounced in his chair all the way through, which I hadn't seen him do for a while.

Badvoc · 30/07/2012 17:21

Ds1 has done it twice now with no probs. He has to do it 3 x per day til we go back/he finishes it.

Went to cinema today to see Ice Age 4...very good :)

Ds1 enjoyed it...so different from this time last year!

DaftMaul · 31/07/2012 22:16

Badvoc, has your ds progressed much in terms of percentage on the program yet? My ds went up a level today but still remains on 2% - which I think it started on Confused At least he seems to be paying a bit more attention to it now!

Badvoc · 31/07/2012 22:22

Yes he has.
He is on level 4 and is up to 10% but we are doing it/have been instructed to do it 3 x per day.
Are you on 1 x per day?
He seems to find it ok ATM but obv it will get harder.

Badvoc · 31/07/2012 22:22

He init go up a level until he can do the level with few errors...it's clever that way :)

Badvoc · 31/07/2012 22:22

Init?
Can't

DaftMaul · 31/07/2012 23:19

Yes, once a day (well I can't remember being told otherwise!).

Ds on level 3 and 2% but only probably done it 6 times in total so far. I'm sure your ds will have done at least three times more sessions, so 2% sounds abou right.

shoppingbagsundereyes · 01/08/2012 09:02

We are seeing robin on Sunday for our second visit. Are we likely to move onto a computery thing or will it be more stairs? Ds does the stairs well but is still rubbish at the toothbrush exercise despite doing it twice a day for two months. He can't stand on one leg for more than a couple of seconds.
