Tinsley House Support Thread

An awful lot of us are now doing Tinsley House, either by going there, or by following the recommendations in The Brain Food Plan

So this is just a general support (and hopefully good news) thread.

Stage 1 of the TH therapy consists of:

  1. Multivitamins
  1. Healthy eating diet
  • High protein, low sugar, no artificial sweeteners, additives etc.
  1. Specific exercises done 3 times a day

Welcome Verity. Glad you're giving it a go.

We do packed lunches.

Not sure how long till we first saw improvements - but def by 8 weeks we knew it was working.

MaryMary - I really recommend vegepa for Omega. Buy it online.

If he can swallow a capsule buy the swallowable ones, else buy the chewable ones......

Stand on left leg when brushing teeth, using left hand to brush.

shoppingbagsundereyes · 11/06/2012 19:58

Robin believes that ds' right brain is weaker than his left. He stands on his left leg and brushes his teeth with his left hand twice a day. This should help to strengthen the right side.

Indigo - thanks for the link. DD just told me that she got the lowest mark in the class for the recent science test. Science has just been a car crash this year; bitchy teacher and DD has trouble remembering the long words and formulas especially. The Senco has stepped in and got someone from her dept to sit down for an hour with her once as week to go through that weeks teaching but that has only happened recently. I am furious especially as I brought it to the attention of the science teacher and the Head of Science who happens to be her house head last autumn last term.

Verity - Wow! Huge progress.

You must be thrilled that she's sleeping better. Hopefully that will have a huge positive effect on everything else.....

Just a quick diet update. I am amazed and delighted how easy it has been to fundamentally change the kids' diet. Ds pre tinsley house on a typical day would eat Frosties, yogurt with chocolate bits, cake, salami sandwich, another yogurt, fish fingers/ sausage and oven chips ( we did eat roast dinners etc but the above was at least 3 times a week), yet another yogurt or an ice lolly or ice cream. Wash it down with black currant squash with aspartame and you have a sugary nightmare.
Today he had fish fingers for breakfast, an oat cookie ( homemade, low sugar, whole meal flour and oats), cheese sandwich on whole meal home made bread, fruit purée, roast pork, roast potatoes, all washed down with water or fruit juice. Neither child even mentioned 'pudding' this evening and both have forgotten about squash. Oh and he ate 2 strawberries :)
Still no veg and reluctant on fruit but soooo much less sugar. I feel very pleased :)

fantastic progress shopping Smile

marymary1000 · 15/06/2012 09:24

Hi there-with regards to eating is there any breakfast cereal that is more acceptable than others when you are in a mad rush or your DH is doing breakfast!!!!

Badvoc · 15/06/2012 09:34

Not really mary Breakfasts should be protein. How about beans on toast? Fairly quick...

marymary1000 · 15/06/2012 11:36

mmm beans make him gag!! i am hoping with a few weeks of exercises and supplements that he will be more open to trying new things.

He will eat sausages, pancakes and omlette just dh seems incapable of producing this.

I had read things before about oatabix but was unsure when i read the label

thanks

shoppingbagsundereyes · 15/06/2012 11:41

Will dh do hummus wrap or cheese or ham sandwich? Ds has those on rushed days, I know the protein is lower than if he had meat but is still good I think

IndigoBell · 15/06/2012 11:48

I use Oatabix - and Robin was not happy :)

So now we do Oatabix and baked beans.

And, I was embarrassed as to how much having baked beans in the morning made to DD Blush

She was far more alert when she got home from school.

Could you cook sausages in the evening so DH just has to microwave them?

OP posts:
DaftMaul · 15/06/2012 14:14

I cook a batch of sausages in one go and then zap a couple in the microwave each morning. Takes 30 seconds tops.

Ds, of course, is now going through a non-sausage phase so have now moved on to bagels with cream cheese and smoked salmon Hmm

shoppingbagsundereyes · 15/06/2012 15:37

Big positive news today: in April ds' teacher wrote a reference to his new school in which she stated ds could ONLY complete even simple mathematics tasks when given 1:1 adult support. Today she told me that ds has concentrated for over an hour on a series of maths tests with no support needed!!! I am overjoyed. Needless to say school think this improvement is down to their fabulous teaching but I'm happy to let them delude themselves :)
Have to say I think it's a bit odd to want a 6 yr old to do maths tests for over an hour anyway but won't let that spoil my delight at the improvement.

marymary1000 · 15/06/2012 15:38

Thats a plan ladies even dh can use the microwave!!!

Daftmaul, what a posh breakfast, breakfast like a king indeed!

This week i have been tweeking ds lunch box at school, removed biscuits and crisps and replaced with oatcakes and strawberries, not a word from him and even with that I have noticed that he is much nicer when he comes out off school. Little things!

Not yet started supplements free trial of vegepa chewables came today so looking at that for next week. I must admit that I ate one, not convinced that he would chew his way through the capsule bearing in mind he gags on a baked bean!! but pretty sure that he wont be too offended by the contents so looks like an option.

Anyone given their kids protein bars??

Badvoc · 15/06/2012 17:11

shopping Smile Thats mu attitude re; school too! My sons school think his amazing progress in the last 2 terms is down to them. Fine. I know why he is doing so well!

IndigoBell · 15/06/2012 17:19

Shopping - that is amazing progress. You must be so thrilled.

I'm gobsmacked actually. So much progress in such a short time Grin

I'm not as restrained as you and badvoc, I let school know exactly why I think my DCs are making progress :)

MaryMary - good news about lunches. He can either swallow the capsule shell or spit it out or you can hide the contents in something like yoghurt.

My good news is that school are starting vision therapy with the 10 kids who have been doing the TH stairs exercise on Monday! We're doing a combination of different vision program's that I've found, not the TH one, so not sure if it'll work or not..... But I'm really thrilled / excited.

That's brilliant re your school indigo. I think ds' progress is 50% brilliant progress, 50% school underestimating what he is capable of. I knew he could concentrate for 20 mins, even though they believed he couldn't but I too am gob smacked at a full hour. For too long he has been allowed to opt out of stuff because they are frightened he will have a melt down. Today all I did was ask ds to promise to try his best and do 'no moaning' and he can willingly do an hour's work! Shall have a celebratory vino this evening

shoppingbagsundereyes · 17/06/2012 07:07

Quick protein q: is one sausage enough for breakfast? With whole meal bread.
Also what do we think of pâté occasionally?

IndigoBell · 17/06/2012 07:19

One sausage sounds fine.

I think pate is brilliant - how on earth will you get him to eat that ? :)

OP posts:
shoppingbagsundereyes · 17/06/2012 07:54

Ds is an oddity. Loves 'adult' stuff like pâté, salmon, sea bass that most kids would hate but won't eat peas Smile
Pâté on toast would be a dream breakfast for him.
