Hi. Chances are if you've opened this thread, you may have followed us from here I thought the new year needed a new thread (also the old one was nearly full!)

The basics: Beatrice has central arthrogryposis and extensive cortical dysplasia. She is 16 weeks old and weighs 8lb 1oz. She is on continuous oxygen at 0.2 litres. She is fed Infatrini with Duocal mixed in via NG tube. She is undergoing ponsetti treatment for her talipes, she also has splints for her hands and is now in a pavlik harness full time for her shallow hip sockets. She is coping very well with all of her treatments. Smile Her community children's nurse describes her as 'defying all the odds'.

The positives: If you have a 4 month old NT baby, the following will probably seem pretty poor progress, but for Beatrice who was stiff and non responsive at bith, she has made great gains. Smile Bea seems very alert in this last week and is becoming more vocal too! She happily shouts at me when something isn't going her way- a vast improvement as she couldn't even cry when born. She moves her arms in all directions now and manages to lift her legs, even with the cast and harness. When she is under her play gym with lights, she moves her arms and legs in appreciation. She also mouths when she is hungry. Her breathing pattern seems much more regular since being on oxygen. She not only recognises my voice and turns to find me, but she can also distinguish other people talking and will move her head in different directions to find who is talking. We assume her eyesight is very poor, although we know she can see shadows and bright lights when it is dark. She adores the cinema and has been twice now!

The downers: Her weight gain is painfully slow- on average 2oz per week. She has fallen off the growth charts completely. She is still sick a couple of times a day. She is having a barium meal and swallow study on Monday to see if there is anything going on. Her sats are irregular and heartrate is very high, so weaning her off oxygen (which she started when she had pneumonia before Christmas) hasn't started yet.

Support: Beatrice was finally awarded DLA at the highest rate today, and we have been told to apply for a blue badge as parking in tight spaces with her oxygen is somewhat problematic Hmm. Next week, our lovely physiotherapist who has been administering the weekly plaster casts is going to start coming to our house to do some massage and play and encourage her arm movements even more. The referral to Helen House Hospice is still being processed. After Bea's casts have come off permanently (just 2 more to go!!) I plan on taking her swimming at the hydrotherapy pool in the special school where my SIL works as a SLT.

At the end of January we have a review with our 'lovely' paediatric consultant, Dr Scrooge. We havent managed to shake her off yet!

Thanks for following us here- I'll add some more pictures in a minute. Smile

Pleased today has been good, hope Bea liked her first taste of hot chocolate!

Hoping for another good day for you all tomorrow.

KateUnrulyBush · 08/02/2012 19:06

I fancy a hot chocolate now :)

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 08/02/2012 19:22

it sounds like you have had a lovely day today. Which is great. And long may it last. It's lovely to come here for a little installment of Bea and Tea and to hear such a good report. Smile

bigbluebus · 08/02/2012 19:30

So glad to hear you've had a good day doing 'normal' things with your friends and Bea.
I guess things may be clarified regarding Bea's health 'status' once you have seen the neurologist but the truth is Doctors don't know everything, they can only go on what they have seen before, and Bea has clearly already far surpassed their expectations. I think her condition is probably best described as 'unpredictable' .
Good news about the possibility of some home care respite as well as the offer of a further stay from the hospice. It is so important for you to be able to have some 'me' time.

BB3 · 08/02/2012 19:41

Juggling I'm pretty sure there would be a melting pot of godmothers in line for bea! Wink

Cup, sounds like a lovely day, bea has great taste -costa hot chocolates are lovely (much better than the Starbucks gak!), and it must be very nice to hear from others that they can see an improvement in bea, you can definitely tell from the pictures IMO.

Hopefully dr death can explain to mr straight talking how bea has defied all her medical predictions and is an incredibly strong little lady. I'm crossing everything that he's able to give you some encouraging news.

Here's to more good days xxx

BaldricksTurnip · 08/02/2012 19:48

Lovely to hear that things are better and that Bea is bringing you joy. Great that you are getting the support you need (finally) and that you are in a position to maybe relax a tiny bit and enjoy her and your lovely family. It must be so hard for you to feel like a normal mum as you have all had such a roller coaster ride over the past few months. Your story has really affected me as you and I were pg at the same time both with our third baby's. My DS was born Sept 26th. I really hope you feel supported and you seem so wise and honest. Everyone here is absolutely rooting for you and little Bea and I hope in some small way it can be a comfort to you how many people's lives have been touched by your incredible story. Thank you for sharing it with us xxx

JenniferLaunders · 08/02/2012 19:53

Lovely, Bea and Tea, she will be a lady-who-lunches next Smile

Hopefully there will be many, many more memories to treasure with Bea - the docs will give their best prognosis and then Bea will do her stuff and utterly amaze them. Don't these medicos realise that Bea and family have the love and prayers of MN behind them? Grin

Greenshirt · 08/02/2012 20:05

I cannot believe how grown up Bea looks in the latest photos, Cup!! She really is absolutely gorgeous :)

ohmeohmy · 08/02/2012 21:03

She can have a whole gaggle of virtual godmothers sending their love and thoughts. Lovely to hear you had a good day.

youarekidding · 08/02/2012 21:09

So glad to here today was a nice one. Love that she tried hot chocolate.

As for godmothers, if you advertise here I fear you'd never make the ceremony as you'd be too busy selecting and replying Grin Bea (and you) have touched so many hearts.

sneezecake · 08/02/2012 21:32

glad she has picked up, little fighter xx

JugglingWithSnowballs · 08/02/2012 21:42

Loving the Bea as a lady-who-lunches Jennifer Smile

Thumbwitch · 08/02/2012 21:57

"Bea and tea" - sounds excellent! :)

Glad that she's stronger again and that the HCPs are being more circumspect with their opinions! Hope the neuro isn't too straight-talking - i.e. doesn't upset you - but if you prepare for him to be harsh, then he might be better than expected.

Yay for letting her have a taste of chocolate - did she look really "WOW! That stuff is GOOOD!"? my DS did Grin
xx

saffronwblue · 08/02/2012 22:11

So glad you and Bea have been able to get out and have a nice time with friends.

Hi cup please give Bea a big squeeze from me, love Bea and Tea, how nice for you both to be able to get out and do something normal. I hope the rest of the week goes as well and that she continues to surprise all of those healthcare professionals.
The respite care sounds great as they are obviously planning for a future with Bea in it.Grin
Love and prayers for the tea set as ever x

AChristmasCarole · 09/02/2012 11:39

Bea and beer next!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 09/02/2012 14:18

cup I have found your story truly inspirational, what a journey you, Bea and your family are having.

It may not feel to you anything out of the ordinary, but the way you write about Bea and the obvious struggles you have had from the start is inspiring. Your words have such composure and eloquence.

Bea and your other daughters are very lucky to have you for their mummy.

I am keeping everything crossed for you all, Bea sounds like a true battler.

trumpton · 09/02/2012 16:56

I want to be an Auntie- Hairy- Cod-Mother. < joins line>

Babyccino Costa for Bea next time. Grin

She's now sleeping peacefully after her busy day and her Mummy is having a Wine

Hope you all have a good weekend, we've got a busy one planned. Smile
