Hi. Chances are if you've opened this thread, you may have followed us from here I thought the new year needed a new thread (also the old one was nearly full!)

The basics: Beatrice has central arthrogryposis and extensive cortical dysplasia. She is 16 weeks old and weighs 8lb 1oz. She is on continuous oxygen at 0.2 litres. She is fed Infatrini with Duocal mixed in via NG tube. She is undergoing ponsetti treatment for her talipes, she also has splints for her hands and is now in a pavlik harness full time for her shallow hip sockets. She is coping very well with all of her treatments. Smile Her community children's nurse describes her as 'defying all the odds'.

The positives: If you have a 4 month old NT baby, the following will probably seem pretty poor progress, but for Beatrice who was stiff and non responsive at bith, she has made great gains. Smile Bea seems very alert in this last week and is becoming more vocal too! She happily shouts at me when something isn't going her way- a vast improvement as she couldn't even cry when born. She moves her arms in all directions now and manages to lift her legs, even with the cast and harness. When she is under her play gym with lights, she moves her arms and legs in appreciation. She also mouths when she is hungry. Her breathing pattern seems much more regular since being on oxygen. She not only recognises my voice and turns to find me, but she can also distinguish other people talking and will move her head in different directions to find who is talking. We assume her eyesight is very poor, although we know she can see shadows and bright lights when it is dark. She adores the cinema and has been twice now!

The downers: Her weight gain is painfully slow- on average 2oz per week. She has fallen off the growth charts completely. She is still sick a couple of times a day. She is having a barium meal and swallow study on Monday to see if there is anything going on. Her sats are irregular and heartrate is very high, so weaning her off oxygen (which she started when she had pneumonia before Christmas) hasn't started yet.

Support: Beatrice was finally awarded DLA at the highest rate today, and we have been told to apply for a blue badge as parking in tight spaces with her oxygen is somewhat problematic Hmm. Next week, our lovely physiotherapist who has been administering the weekly plaster casts is going to start coming to our house to do some massage and play and encourage her arm movements even more. The referral to Helen House Hospice is still being processed. After Bea's casts have come off permanently (just 2 more to go!!) I plan on taking her swimming at the hydrotherapy pool in the special school where my SIL works as a SLT.

At the end of January we have a review with our 'lovely' paediatric consultant, Dr Scrooge. We havent managed to shake her off yet!

Thanks for following us here- I'll add some more pictures in a minute. Smile

Great news for the weight gain. Yay Bea.

MessNessPess · 30/01/2012 18:22

Glad Bea has picked up again and you will get used to the added equipment over time.

JenniferLaunders · 30/01/2012 18:33

Lol at "Chunky Pants"!

Fab news - hopefully Bea has turned a corner and will continue to go from strength to strength.

youarekidding · 30/01/2012 19:08

Arf @ 'chunky pants' and 'pumping burgers' Grin

Great news, I'm pleased for her and also the whole teaset.

mummynoseynora · 30/01/2012 19:54

fantastic news!!! Fingers crossed she keeps it up!

scummymummy · 30/01/2012 21:05

Hurrah at that porker Bea! Love the photos of her in the sensory room. You are doing so amazingly well, Cup.

cupofteaplease · 31/01/2012 08:33

Beatrice is doing well. She's been sick twice this morning, both times brought on by coughing, but I'm remaining positive.

The hospice have no room for us until our planned stay on Friday, so we'll be on the ward until then. I'm so BORED!! Anyone fancy keeping me company?!

I'm popping out this morning to buy some birthday presents as Mabel has a party to go to this week, and it is my nephew's birthday too. I feel guilty about leaving Bea, but I need some fresh air and a change of scenery. Dh isn't 100% so he won't be visiting today, so it's going to be a long day (all my friends/family have children and most work, so it's hard for them to visit the ward). I'm going to meet my sister for a tea after shopping though.

Hope everyone has a super day. Do any of you have snow? None here yet...

So pleased that Bea is doing so well. So very proud of both you and her. Hope that the fresh air and a change of scenery does you good. x

bigbluebus · 31/01/2012 09:00

Glad to hear Bea is doing well and that you are feeling positive in spite of her being sick today - I expect the brilliant weight gain has helped you keep positive.
Shame the hospice have no space until Friday, but getting out of the hospital this morning will be good for you and I'm sure the staff will be cooing over Bea whilst your gone.
The days always seem much longer in hospital - I'm afraid I fill my time reading trashy magazines when DD is in (the sort I would never dream of buying when at home) as I never seem able to concentrate enough to read anything more serious.
Sorry I don't live anywhere near, so can't pop in and keep you company - but hopefully someone else will oblige and relieve the monotony.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 31/01/2012 09:01

I cant think of anything I would rather do than come and play with Bea for a bit. Unfortunately I am a bit too far away Grin

Dont feel bad about leaving her for a while. I think its really important to get out once a day. I used to go for a walk every day. It cost me a blumming fortune mind you, the hosptial was on top of Oxford Street!

I hope things are easier when you get to the hospice. It should be much more conducive (sp) to family visits etc.

Have a good day.

saffronwblue · 31/01/2012 09:19

Go, you beefy Bea! cup, enjoy being bored. You deserve a bit of monotony.

JenniferLaunders · 31/01/2012 09:51

No, you need to look after yourself, have break, change of scene, social life, exercise, stimulation elsewhere etc. No guilt allowed - you don't want to burn out/have a breakdown/compromise your own health.

I've had some long hours waiting round hospitals recently and got through three thick books of quick crosswords - nice and absorbing if you like that kind of thing.

Giving Bea a virtual cuddle right now...

JugglingWithSnowballs · 31/01/2012 10:07

Sounds like a good plan to spend a bit of time at the shops choosing those couple of birthday pressies. Maybe you can spend a bit of time wrapping them up prettily ? My dd gave me a lovely pressie for my birthday today in a nice little box tied with a ribbon - "just" some little bits of jewelry she'd found in the charity shop, all green, my favourite colour. Small blessings are the best !

Hope you have a good day with Bea, and get to have a little break too x

JugglingWithSnowballs · 31/01/2012 10:09

Seeing your sister for a Brew later sounds good as well !

Thumbwitch · 31/01/2012 10:10

Good idea to have a break, sounds like it could be a long week! Shame your DH is under the weather, hope you have someone who can bring you stuff in and sit and chat for a while, at least in the evenings.

Hugs for you both xxx

cupofteaplease · 31/01/2012 16:45

Beatrice took a turn for the worst. We thought we were losing her. We've had her baptised. She's perked up again but things are very uncertain. I'm so sad.

JugglingWithSnowballs · 31/01/2012 16:56

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that cup

Do you have anyone there with you now ?

I'm glad she's been christened - she has a beautiful name - I've always loved it Smile
Thinking of you all tonight. Will light my MN lavender candle for Bea today x

Come on Bea !

DottyDot · 31/01/2012 16:58
