We are back from the hospital, Beatrice has been fed and dh has gone to work. So I have time to sit down and start the first post about the journey ahead, which I hope will be a long and happy one.

Beatrice was born at 36 weeks weighing 3lb 14oz. After an initial diagnosis of Edward's Syndrome was proved to be incorrect, an MRI and genetics tests were carried out and today we have some initial answers.

Beatrice's brain is very small and underdeveloped. The consultant described it as 'simple', because it does not have all of the detail expected in a typical brain. She explained that we should expect Beatrice to be severly disabled. She is also very small and delicate, and at risk of catching infections. They anticipate that she may suffer from fits. They have told us to watch out for her breathing during feeding, as her muscles are weak. They also commented on her shallow breathing pattern. They believe the problem was caused by a gene that both dh and I must carry, but they haven't got the answers yet and admit that they may never know. They have ultimately described her condition as life-limiting.

However, we have left the consultation feeling at peace. We don't know what the future holds, but realistically, neither do the doctors. We have great faith in Beatrice, she amazes us every day, and she is surrounded by so much love from us and her wider family.

I would like to use this thread as a space to jot down how she is doing, and how we as a family are coping with life. If anyone wants to check in and follow her progress, please do. We couldn't have got through the past 2 weeks without MN. Smile

Hi Cup did you get to your GP this week to discuss how to look after you ? Praying that your little cherub will soon get over her cold. Have you got anything nice planned for the weekend? Hugs x

cupofteaplease · 02/12/2011 21:15

Thank you.

The splints are the smallest they make, and we had to wait weeks for them to come from the States, so that's a shame.

I'm going to the GP on Wednesday, so I will beg for my dose to be increased then!

Weekend- dh's car has broken down, so my brother is coming to stay and fix it, and if we have the energy we want to decorate the house for Christmas. We'll see!

They can make teeny tiny splints, you may need to see an orthotist, they make them using mouldable plastic and a water bath (I can't remember the proper term).

I hope you have a nice weekend, Bella loves Christmas trees :) the fairy lights and sparkly bits. Next have some lovely lights with sparkly reflective bits if Bea likes them.

SarahFim · 03/12/2011 08:00

Hope you and your girls enjoy making the house look pretty for Christmas. I expect Bea will pick up on all the excitement and perhaps notice the sparkly bits!

Just keep walking through one day at a time and go easy on yourself - take time to meet your own needs. I imagine it's taken so much emotional energy out of you taking care of Bea, so do make time for yourself to recharge the batteries.

Christmas bear [fbear] for Bea. xx

Thumbwitch · 04/12/2011 09:44

Just thinking of you all at the moment, CupofTea - hope Bea is ok and her cold has gone (I have one now, plus laryngitis, hence thinking of you!).

Christmas lights have gone up in our house now - DS just loves them - so glad they're attracting Bea's attention.

Strength and love to you all as always xxx

Well Beatrice has been to the cinema for the first time, to watch Happy Feet 2 Xmas Grin

She was meant to stay with dh, but he had to work outside on his car and the tickets had already been booked, so she had to come along.

She loved it! The light from the screen really amazed her and she was wide eyed and wide awake. I will definitely take her again. Xmas Grin

Dd2 was less impressed, she snuggled up with me and fell asleep!

Lurked but not posted before, have to now :) That's lovely; little Beatrice the film buff.

Masserrato · 04/12/2011 14:32

What a lovely, lovely story. Beatrice sounds alert and very happy and it must have been wonderful for you to watch her enjoying the experience.

ExitPursuedBySanta · 04/12/2011 15:15

Aw bless. Bea at the cinema.

SarahFim · 04/12/2011 15:58

So sweet, Bea and sis cuddled up with mum. She found the light and sound show quite stimulating for the senses, I guess. Perhaps you could go and see a film this week that you fancy seeing, and Bea will be just as mesmerised! Hope your car is sorted now.

SoupDragon · 04/12/2011 16:05

Checking in to see how Bea is doing :)

TheOriginalFAB · 04/12/2011 19:53

I love the post about Beatrice going to the cinema Grin. Don't forget to write about it in her baby book.

up yours Dr Doom

Thumbwitch · 04/12/2011 22:23

oh that's brilliant! Glad she enjoyed it Xmas Smile
Wish I had a LIke button for FAB's post Xmas Wink

Was Happy Feet 2 any good, btw? Been wondering about taking DS to see it...

Back in hospital, cold and sickness has made her a bit dehydrated I think.

When they told me to wait with her in the playroom, I felt the collective wrath of MN behind me and I replied, 'No, sorry, can't do that'. Amazingly, they found us a room in a heartbeat. So thanks for the previous encouragement Smile

I don't think they plan on keeping her in, they want to do some nasal swabs and hourly obs, but I've made it clear I'm not happy to be fobbed off about her sickness and the Dr seemed to take me seriously. Also, I know Dr Doom is on duty today, so she can get her butt in here and deal with her patient.

Ooh, can you tell I'm in a fighting mood?!

Yay, tiger mummy! well done for standing your ground - excellent work!

(((hugs))) for you and Beatrice though - it's no fun having a sick tiny :(

cupofteaplease · 05/12/2011 13:40

Thumbwitch, yes the film was ok. Not as good as Tintin or or Arthur Christmas which were both superb.

lostinwales · 05/12/2011 13:41

Go cupoftea

Thumbwitch · 05/12/2011 13:50

Arthur Christmas is fab, isn't it? Haven't seen Tintin though (not really DS's age range). Loved Arthur though Xmas Smile

tooloudhere · 05/12/2011 14:11

Sorry to hear that Bea is not well. If you think you can handle an overnight stay when you get Dr doom in try saying that you are not happy to take her home until the barium has been done and you are happy to wait for aslong as that takes as you want to know that there are no abnormalities causing the sickness. You may be surprised by having it done today or tomorrow latest. This has always made things happen for us Wink. Hope you get sorted soon.

SparklyGingerbreadMuffin · 05/12/2011 14:39

Go Cup! You tell 'em :)

Angelswings · 05/12/2011 15:17

MN at its best when you know that you can be assertive for your loved ones without being unreasonable.

Hope Dr Doom learns more about the amazing qualities of Beatrice when she visits today and you get home soon with some answers and a date for the investiagtion in the next week.

Four4me · 05/12/2011 15:22

Yeah Dr Doom don't you dare mess with cup and the mn tribe stood right there behind her!!!!!!!!

SarahFim · 05/12/2011 17:04

I think docs do take parents seriously when they voice concerns, partly because the docs genuinely do want to do their best to help the patient, but partly because if you flag up a problem and they don't do their job properly and something goes badly wrong, they could get into a LOT of trouble.

So use that to your advantage in getting Bea the attention she needs. Be really precise about issues and ask for a treatment plan on how they are going to solve those problems.

Hope Bea rallies soon.

cupofteaplease · 05/12/2011 17:35

Staying in, I'm giving diarrhoealite? Every 15 mins to reydrate but stop sickness.

Dr doom walked straight past her room. She has said to registrar that Bea has to wait until Jan for barium swallow, can't make it sooner.

Idiot.

Have you managed to speak to PALS at all? Asked whether you can be transferred to a more sympathetic consultant?
