A thread for Beatrice: Because a life filled with love is a life worth living.

We are back from the hospital, Beatrice has been fed and dh has gone to work. So I have time to sit down and start the first post about the journey ahead, which I hope will be a long and happy one.

Beatrice was born at 36 weeks weighing 3lb 14oz. After an initial diagnosis of Edward's Syndrome was proved to be incorrect, an MRI and genetics tests were carried out and today we have some initial answers.

Beatrice's brain is very small and underdeveloped. The consultant described it as 'simple', because it does not have all of the detail expected in a typical brain. She explained that we should expect Beatrice to be severly disabled. She is also very small and delicate, and at risk of catching infections. They anticipate that she may suffer from fits. They have told us to watch out for her breathing during feeding, as her muscles are weak. They also commented on her shallow breathing pattern. They believe the problem was caused by a gene that both dh and I must carry, but they haven't got the answers yet and admit that they may never know. They have ultimately described her condition as life-limiting.

However, we have left the consultation feeling at peace. We don't know what the future holds, but realistically, neither do the doctors. We have great faith in Beatrice, she amazes us every day, and she is surrounded by so much love from us and her wider family.

I would like to use this thread as a space to jot down how she is doing, and how we as a family are coping with life. If anyone wants to check in and follow her progress, please do. We couldn't have got through the past 2 weeks without MN. Smile

Those stickers are fab !

There are a few dairy free formulas with extra calories and also some milk that is easy to digest (something to do with enzymes and already being broken down I think) sometimes you have to ask/be persistent. Do you have a dietician yet? I hope Dr HavingToChangeHerTune continues to behave, she must melt when she sees Bea, she is too beautiful.

Your new pictures are completely adorable :)

PacificDogwood · 23/11/2011 21:25

cupofteaplease, I had 'lost' this thread, but am so glad that I just stumbled across it again!

Bea is just gorgeous. And I cannot believe the change in her - she just looks to alive! Sorry, I cannot stop gushing - you are clearly doing an amazing job with her.

Right, I am off to read back.
Smile

PacificDogwood · 23/11/2011 21:52

I've caught up, yeah!

You certainly have had more than your fair share of ups and downs, so give yourself some credit. You are Mother; hear you Roar Smile!

Just briefly re meds for sicky babies:
Infant Gaviscon is basically a feed thickener which can help some babies with mild reflux as thickened viscous stuff won't run so much IYKWIM.
Domperidone helps stomach emptying ie it encourages feed to go down stream, and not up.
Omeprazole is a very potent acid suppressor which is very helpful when reflux has caused inflammation to the stomach/gullet lining.

FWIW, my preemie DS2 had a barium meal aged 6 months during which he refluxed beautifully, just to prove that he really, actually had reflux. None of the meds had made much difference to him and I got quite used to just cleaning up the mess and feeding him (bottles) on demand. He got better once he was on solids.

Yeah for clubfoot treatment.
How is her elbow/arm now?
Are her sisters still in love with her Smile?
And yeah for having a Plan - that must be such a relief to you.

I am v pleased that DrDeath has had to come round to TeamBea!

ChippingInNeedsSleep · 23/11/2011 22:03

Cup - the new photos are adorable. I always think she is a smiley baby - I know she's not changing and smiling but there's just something about her that says 'Yep - I'm here & I'm adorable - get used to it Grin' I think I spy a double chin emerging!!

How are the big girls coping with it all?

4madboys · 23/11/2011 22:06

just catching up, that picture the second one down, looks like a smile to me, she is def getting there Grin

i cant offer any practical advice re feeds etc but sounds like dr death is now getting on board and changing their mind about bea which is a positive! and about time!

hope the next few days go well and her feeding settles down.

thinking of you all and sending love xx

Sidge · 23/11/2011 22:07

Oh my goodness I love the new pics - she looks so cheeky!!

What a cutie, she's definitely got that "I'm here, I'm staying, and you'll damned well know about it" look Grin

4madboys · 23/11/2011 22:07

oh and great news re the club foot and the improvement :)

starfishmummy · 23/11/2011 22:39

Agreeing with slowburner about seeing if there are different feeds which might help. Ds was sick for years. He had barium swallow, tests for goodness knows what. tried numerous feeds and we got the " not normally a problem" whenever we asked if it might be the latest feed......but eventually he was put on peptamen and the change was instant.
At first our community nurse acted as liaison with the dietitian which i don't think was ideal, so if bea doesn't have a dietitian it might be worth seeing if you can get one. Ds had a community dietitian who saw him at home so one less hospital trip.

If it is a barium swallow that they are recommending for bea - its reasonably simple - Ds just had barium down his tube, they only watch it as far down as the place where the oesophagus meets the stomach and is relatively quick. The main problem was the barium blocking the tube so it.might need to be changed afterwards.

dontrememberme · 23/11/2011 22:57

Beautiful photos, Bea is just gorgeous.
That smile will come, ds2 was over 6 months before we saw a smile or any real acknowledgement of us.
He is a happy smiley 9 year old now.

saffronwblue · 23/11/2011 22:58

Love the new photos- Bea has such huge big expressive eyes and is definitely thinking about smiling. What a rollercoaster you are on cup. I just want to say how much I admire your strength and clarity as you face this everchanging situation. Your three girls are very lucky.

CaroleService · 24/11/2011 12:36

She smiles with her eyes.

9 weeks tomorrow??

Thumbwitch · 24/11/2011 12:50

Oh cupoftea, those photos are just gorgeous! And yes, her little Mona Lisa smile there on the second one - fantastic Grin

Perhaps DrDeath should be renamed DrCynical? Or DrDoubter? Although she's coming round to the idea that Bea isn't giving up, so perhaps DrGettingThere Wink

MunchingNoPickles · 24/11/2011 14:57

Yeah to more beautiful Bea pics.

argghh · 24/11/2011 15:39

Just popping in to check up on beautiful Bea's progress. You go girl!!

DeeScent · 24/11/2011 16:54

Ah, yes, a Mona Lisa smile, enigmatic and very knowing. Quite a twinkle in those lovely eyes too. I bet Bea is soaking up all the love'n'cuddles and it's making her feel just grand inside.

TheOriginalFAB · 24/11/2011 18:38
